For those not in Perry... I ordered a COMPU-FIRE ignition system today... hopefully it will be here Monday and I can cut down the big distributor bump I've built into my cowling. I can't wait! I put my KR up on some pallets so it is easier to get underneath and sand. Now I know how thay painted the Cistene Chapel[sp]. If you get a chance, paint the bottom of your KR before you hang the engine, it's much easier to turn over then. I sanded... sanded... then marked low spots for filler. Having enough of that, I floxed in a couple of 1/8" thick tabs I've made with camlock fastener recepticles riveted on. The idea is that you can pop off the cowling by just twisting about 12-18 camlock fasteners. So far so good. Last night I messed with the engine baffleing. I've used Steve Bennets templates for the VW, which make it MUCH easier. However as it says in the instructions, your baffeling will be different from the template. They are a great start though. My goal is to get the engine turned over and run for the first 20 minute break-in period before years-end. Glass Tips... I found that the large plastic kitty litter and kitty food containers make great containers for the Cotton FLOCK that comes in plastic sacks. It's much easier to dispense when you have gloves on, and unlike the sacks, it is unlikely to to tip over and spill everywhere. I'd give you the brand, but the container has a 3" or so opening with a flip open lid. For micro balloons, I like to use 2 liter soda bottles that have been rinsed out and dried. You can squeeze them and the micro pours right out into your mixing jar. Make sure to wear eye protection and a resperator for this. The tiny balloons do a real number on your eyes if you accidently get any of the dust. Try not to get too much dust out and about when you pour it into the bottle. For DRY micro... I like it REALLY dry, and it doesn't like to stick to anything. So I paint pure epoxy into the depression I want to fill, and it helps the stuff stay put. Might have to come down and visit you again to see your KR. I am in a hold status while gathering up tools and trying to study for the General portion of the A&P license that I am tying to get. Hi Ross, >I ordered a COMPU-FIRE ignition system today... hopefully it will >be here Monday and I can cut down the big distributor bump I've built >into my cowling. I can't wait! I saw the Compu-Fire complete installation in the KR-2 named "Stripe 1" (the one that had the tiny incident friday) and it looks absolutely great. Very clean and efficient. Out of curiosity, where did you order it from and how much did it cost, 'cause I'm immediately going to by the Compu-Fire ignition system for my engine. Thanks. I have seen in in Suppliers of VW car engine parts for the same cost. I would just give Steve Bennet a call at Great Plains. I won a nites lodging there at the Perry Regency! knocked the bill down from $150.xx to $102.xx and since divided that by two with my roomie add on gas and food and t-shirt and coffee mug and it was pretty darn near affordable. I got back to Los Alamos and Jeff Scott's plane wasnt in hanger just his truck. Figgered that since the last 150 miles were in rainstorm and 100foot ceilings he stopped somewhere . Called his wife and yep, that was the case Him and David R. of the "cutie" Hummelbird made it to Santa Rosa and had to turn back to Tucumcari. Safely down and dry in motel. I had a great time at Perry but didn't finish up the roll of film I'll post 'em when I finish up roll remaining pictures will be of my canopy frame and forward deck/header tank. By nearly unamimous agreement next year's gathering will be at: Perry again. good choice. Here are the awards that I remember: Best KR interior: Jim Faughn Best KR-2: Bobby Muse Best KR-1: Tom Bagnetto Best Engine Installation: Tom Bagnetto Oldest Pilot to fly KR in: Robert Muse Longest flight: Robert Muse Spot Landing contest: Marty Roberts Peoples Choice award: Calvin Cambell The 1998 Gathering will be held in Perry, OK on September 18-20. I finally got a flight in a KR. Marty Roberts took me for a ride in his KR-2. Jeff Scott's KR looked great! The pictures on the web do not do it justice! It is a really nice KR and it seemed to fly great. Mike Ladigo had his turbo-prop KR 1 1/2. and he fired it up several times. This KR will definitely be sharp when it is finally finished. Well better go now. We were doing 200 mph when we buzzed the hanger and then turned on a dime. He has a G meter that showed a negative 2g. The first time I ever did that. Wow!!! The KR is like a little Ferrari. I have no doubt that I made the right decision to build a KR. What a plane! Marvin McCoy Seattle, WA. North end of Boeing field >Mr.Marvin@worldnete.att.net >-------------------- I was really impressed with the KR (except with the small size). The 200 mph buzzes with at least one 4g pull up was really impressive. I did not notice any bad habits with 2 good size people on board. I weigh about 220 so Marty had a good full load when he took me up and it still handled great. I will appreciate the stretched cockpit though even if it slows down my KR a little bit. I just wish I could afford to put an O-200 in it. It was also nice to put faces with the people here on KRNet. It was my first Gathering and it will NOT be my last. I am going to try to at least have my KR on the gear by the next gathering. I will bring it along no matter how much I get done. Well I better go and get to work on my KR. It is amazing what a ride will do to you!!
