My name is Jud Stone and am a recent graduate of the USAF Academy with a "General Engineering" degree (Mechanical, areo, and EE...Jack of all trades, master of none). I'm currently in pilot training at Colubus AFB, MS. My "building" experience includes R/C planes (go figure), hobbie woodworking, boat building, Ham Radio (KB0RVR), tinkering, inventing, etc. Like I said, "I'm a Jack..." Flying experience started early flying with my dad. He is a missionary "bush" pilot with JAARS (Jungle Aviation and Radio Service) and flown in Brazil, Liberia (W Africa), and most recently in Colombia. So I have some "unlogged" time in Helio Courriers, 206's, and a Navajo/panther conversion. My Air Force experience so far includes TG-3 (gliders), TG-7 (motor-glider), T-3 Firefly (the USAF's own "Hombuilt"), and the vernerable T-37 Tweet (yes they're still flying). My "project" is still in the brain storming stage. It will be a few years, at least, until I have the time and stability (maybe longer depending on the aircraft I get out of training). It will probably include some of these ideas (the more sane ones I hope): - -Stretch/widened (KR-2SS,XL,3,4??) - -airfoil change (not sure about a laminar profile, see STOL) - -Semi-monocote stressed skin wing (Could be lighter if the composite qualities are exploited better) - -STOL Mods (Helio time clouding judgement?) -Flaps (sloted, "fowler" ??) -drooped ailerons, Flaperons, and or supplimental spoilers (a la Helio)? -leading edge devices (Handly/page slats or vort. gen ?) - -redesigned empenage (x-section and profile i.e. bigger) - -retracts (I like the motorcycle fork set-up I've seen but will not sacrifice weight or off feild ability/also like the CA-65 mechanical system) - -Engine ??(Jabiru 3300 except for $$, Honda GoldWing/Valkarie 1500/2000 ???) - -wing tanks - -full electric (IFR legal???) The list of hairbrained ideas could go on forever. I understand and agree with KISS, BUT...I'm a gizmo man. What will probaly happen is that I will build a fairly standard KR-2S first for the experience. Then comence to design and build my own creation using some of the techniques from the KR. Questions for the group: - -Has anyone heard of a conversion of the Honda Goldwing/Valkarie F-6 1500 engine? Its a Hor. Opp. 6 cyl, liquid cooled, stone reliable and produces around 100hp (rear wheel) in the bike (around 70-80 hp a 3000 rpm). I don't know the weight but it sounds promising for a stock engine. I did find someone marketing a conversion for the old 4 cyl 1100 GW engine (80 hp, 140# w/psru). Also, the rumor mill says that Honda has a 2000cc Goldwing for year 2000.... - -How robust is that motorcycle fork retract system? Would it comprimise off field ability or ground handleing. It sure looks COOL with a clean underside. Has anyone down a true stress analysis or was in done "rule of thumb"/"engineering intuition" (hey, they got me through many a research project, but this a weight critical application with a lot "riding" on it)? - -Has anyone used the CA-65 worm gear retact system? He claims it "can" be lighter than "some" fixed gear applications (Of course that was in the 60's). I also know that this design has been signed off by a professional engineer and some engineering institution or another. Other options? - -Has anyone done (or at least toyed with) a KR-2+, 3, or 4 or is Don's XL as big as the KR has ever gotten? I hear (no pun intended) the noise reduction with Steve's wheel is very good. I think it is 4" and not as hard as RR one. The down side is the rod springs I've seen on older homebuilts seem to like to "twist" and the wheel ends up leaning. Some sort of firm "socket/frame" would have to be made to attach this tail wheel assembly to the bottom of the wooden KR boat and to spread the forces imposed. The flat spring helps fight this twist and is easy to install. Some guys have gone to two springs together and that seems to help a lot. You might want to talk with the Dragon and Q guys about what they use for a glass tail wheel spring. I heard a story at the '96 gathering that the glass rod tailwheel Dan made was a real chore to make. Doesn't Jim Faughn have one of the glass rod ones? Jim, ya out there? Can someone > provide this measurement? John, Like many of the dimensions in the plans, I had to scale that one off the drawing. I think it's shown going about 3/4 of the way down, and I made mine as wide as I could without it sticking out into the wind. I actually extended mine (and the verticals that it fastens to) all the way to the lower longeron too, but later figured out why it doesn't go all the way. There has to be some way to access the nuts that hold your tailwheel on. Fortunately this was before I glued it in, so I left a half moon shaped hole down there for swinging a ratchet. All of this may very well be overkill, as the majority of the forces back there are downward, but my horizontal stab is adjustable, and I didn't want it going anywhere at an inopportune time... Trust me when I say...."If a 2-stroker can quit, it will, & usually at the most in-opportune moment of your flight." In the 'lil ultralights & light experimentals (read UL-type craft) this is really no big deal, your landing speed is 40 mph or less & you can get in most anywhere. A KR on the other hand............ There are a number of 4-stroke options out there for the KR's & in my opinion, feel they would be a much better bet than a 2-stroke. I'm gonna use the 1835 HAPI that I have to start with. I wired up external volume/squelch controls for the Terra built in VOX intercom and a relay PCB based on the schematic. One thing I noticed after wiring is that I failed to use shielded wire on the volume/squelch controls. Murphys law says this is going to give me interference problems later, but I've already dressed the cables. I've shielded 1/2 of the run from the Com radio to the KARMIC connector (See RST columns in Kitplanes or my earlier posts RE KARMIC). But their is about 12" of unshielded run for these two lines to the radio. At this point I'm betting that the grounded panel, and the grounded chase I routed the line in will provide adequate shielding. Photos? Well perhaps by Saturday. Anyone have some pros/cons regarding unshielded wiring? Maybe I will write Jim Weir at RST. I will just get some braid and place this over the line if it's a problem. I'm thinking about placing the headset/mic jacks at the bottom of the pannel at the left/rigt ends. Anyone done this? I would appriciate some location tips here. One thought was to place jacks just behind the seat back so the cables run behind the pilot/co-pilot, but that's more work than just mounting jacks in the bottom of the panel. Also, I'm considering how to mount the PTT switch on the stick. I'm thinking of going to the hardware store to find the right size plug for the stick tube, then drilling and mounting the switch. Ideas/tricks for routing the PTT line from the switch would be usefull... simple, but any gotchas would be appriciated. I've decided to go ahead and run my fuel system as I originally layed out. Each wing tank has independant fuel pumps, so I can pump pressureized fuel to the Ellison from either tank. The 5gal header tank is gravity feed at the moment. I believe I may need to rethink this later, based on fuel flow and pressure requirements of the Ellison. Murphys law says that I will need to refine this to insure that the header fuel can be provided with adequate pressure too, but I haven't decided how I want to correct this. One other issue I've run into is that I have fuel lines running close to electrical in the panel area. This is a general no/no. One fix would be to wield/braze a 3' or so extension on my fuel shutoff valve, to move all my fuel lines/fittings to the inside firewall from the panel area. I like this idea, but am looking at what my shopping list for AN fittings etc will be to resolve all my fuel system problems in one shot. I think if I buy a 3->1 fuel selector instead of the 2->1 I have, and also get a couple of fittings, I can solve all my fuel issues in one day of re-routing. At least I'm haveing fun again... this is what it's all about. -- Ross - -- KRNET-L Administrator !!! REMEMBER POSTS GO TO !!! krnet@krnet.org !!! KRNET-L@teleport.com !!! rossy@teleport.com !!! I have noticed that it is a pain to get into an aircraft and have wires infront of your legs and you got to try to move all the wires and sometimes you tend to catch a wire by mistake and bang there goes your headset on the floor etc. Can you imagine trying to get your headset off the floor in a KR. I intend to install some sort of hanger that i can put my headsets onto behind my head when i am finished and ready to get out of the aircraft. This is my two cents worth. Mine are mounted to the shelf, but I may need to do some modifications. I would like more seperation between the pilot and passenger side pedals primarily to get the outer pedals closer to the fuselage sides. I widened my fuselage about three inches and although the firewall is 'to plan', It appears that I will have to sit at a slight angle to align myself with the pedals. Has anyone else who has widened their fuselage noticed this or am I being paranoid? I was planning on running the straps outside the fuselage, covered with one ply of lightweight glass, faired in with micro. They would mount to the landing gear which I sized for a minimum 5G static load. I had also planned on a secondary brindle attaching to the upper engine mount. - -- Don Reid mailto:donreid@erols.com http://www.erols.com/donreid/kr_page.htm ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jan 1998 21:34:58 EST From: BSHADR Subject: KR: New KR Guy - Old questions KRNetheads: Very interesting Email from John Flora.
