My 17-year-old son Matt is in a Personal Finance class in High School, and has to do a report on the field he hopes to go into, which is Aerospace (of course he is interested in space more than atmospheric). Part of the deal is he has to interview somebody in that field, ask questions that give an idea of how hard it is to get into the field, how much they make, how much study is involved in getting the degree, what kind of companies hire AEs, etc. etc.- it's supposed to give them a realistic handle on what to expect in their career choice. There are no aerospace engineers in Medford, Oregon (surprised?), so I'm trying to find one of you guys who might be willing to do a 5- to 10-minute telephone interview (on my nickel, of course). The questions would be pre-arranged, so hopefully not much of your time would be wasted. The report is due the first of April, so the interview would have to be done within, say, the next week or so. Anybody out there think you might be able to help? Thanks! If the glue breaks clean, then the glue is weaker than the wood. The first case means that the joint is as strong as it can be. The second case means the joint is not as strong as the wood. It may also be possible that you are clamping too hard. T88 need a moderate clamping pressure. Some of the older glues required a very high pressure to bond properly. - -- Don Reid Bumpass, Va. mailto:donreid@erols.com KR2XL at http://www.erols.com/donreid/kr_page.htm Ultralights at http://www.erols.com/donreid/usua250.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Mar 1998 17:29:47 -0600 From: Ed Janssen Subject: Re: KR: t88 Bob, It's important, of course, for the wood to separate instead of the glue joint itself, but I don't know if there has been much discussion on how MUCH wood we should expect to pull away??? The guys who make the stuff told me it could work when older, as long as it still "gels". I would just go get some new glue if I were you so you can stop worrying, and feel/be safer. None of my joints pull away a whole lot of wood (sixteenth), but if it is only a few thousandths, then that seems a little low. Make sure you are coating both sides of the joint, that helps with the seeping in, and keeps the joint from getting too dry. If it is cold, that will effect the viscosity too. Get some new glue and use the old stuff where it doesn't count as much. :) Then you can stop worrying. Only cost you another $18-$30 I would think, depending on the quantity. Don't thin with alcohol. I've tried this before using West System on RC models and if it doesn't all evaporate before the resin sets up, it will leave the finished part "porous" and hence weaker than solid T88 glue. Just heat the resin by placing the resin jug in a bucket of warm water ( hot tap water ~ 140 deg.F.) for 20 minutes and remix. This will "revive" the resin and lower the viscosity. It is 40 7/8" wide (by my measurement) and the instrument panel location on my fuselage is 40 1/8" wide. I can trim 3/8" off each side and make it fit. I could have easily widened my fuselage to the 40 7/8" width. The next part you may find hard to believe, I did. They sell these for 11.95 each! If anybody wants to build there own panels, plan on a lot of time. I have the better part of 25 hours on my panel which you can see as the first picture on the construction page of my site. I used 3/16 6061 just for regidity. If anyone wants to design there own panel, I used some software you see in av mags called Panel Planner. It is a great program and has all the instruments you would possibly use in the database along with cutout templates, specs., cost and manufacturers name and address. In addition to laying your panel out on your computer screen, you can also print out full size faces of your instruments to lay on your panel blank to see how things look full size. Here's the deal, I have two copies of this program, if anyone wants one I'll send it to you as long as you send Steve a "contribution" to the NLF or Ross a "contribution" for the KRnet (Randy, I thought you might like this idea :-)). I'll be posting the pictures and a long narrative on the step by step Great Plains 1835 to 2180 upgrade, along with hints and what I thought of the process tonight or tomorrow. I was going to do that last night but my 15 year old son pickup up a concrete bench seat while out with a friend last night (he still doesn't know why) and ended up dropping it on the end of his middle finger. He's the bigger one of the two with the golfball eyes sitting in the back seat of our 172 in the first picture on my flying page. He has orthopedic surgery today to see if he gets to keep the end of his finger, mine are crossed. The 'unofficial' and customary amount is a donation of $10 annually per s*bscriber, to maintain the list. The administrator is Ross Youngblood, and he does pay a heavy price for keeping up the Net. His official "whiner" is Randy Stein (a fine whine is always aged, BTW)- and periodically Randy will remind folks here on the Net that money is always welcome. It seems to be somewhat traditional that the old-timers ante up right before or after the annual KR Gathering in September, when the Pepsi flows freely and the coffers are once again flush with cash. However, it is entirely acceptable to pay as you go. Just contact Ross directly, e-mail to rossy@teleport.com, and he'll give you his mailing address so you can send in the check, made out to him (KRNet doesn't have an account). Or, if you're planning to go to the Gathering in Perry, Oklahoma, you can wait and put it in the offering plate then. After you load and use it, chances are it would be worth more to the next builder who is just starting his panel. Good idea. If all you want are to post some pictures to your WWW site, then one of the digital cameras will be fine, but fuzzy. For the cream of the crop of digital cameras, check into the Olympos line. I think the D-12 is the good one, but is about $700. If you want people to actually be able to read the instruments on a panel photograph easily, use a regular 35mm camera, and get a scanner. I have the UMAX Astra 1200S. I got it for $400, it now goes for $249. It has a hardware resolution of 600x1200 DPI. Hardware resolution is what is important, not interpolated resolution. For WWW use, you don't really need all that resolution, so for 600x300 resolution, you can get the UMAX Astra 600S (S for SCSI, P for Parallel). The 600S is top rated, only costs $149 or less, and does a great job. I like my 1200S a lot, but one test had the 600S coming out even better. :) I don't think you can go wrong with that scanner, and the software is good too. When scanning, use the DPI setting needed to get the details in the pic. For a 4x6, I will typically use anywhere from 200 to 400 DPI. But a 150 DPI scan will give you fine results usually. What you scan at is normally defined by the end use. For printing, you will want to use a high DPI. IE, a 300 DPI printer would like at least a 300 DPI picture. If you plan to do a lot of printing of your pics, I would get the higher hardware resolution scanner. For printers, I like the Epson Stylus Color 800 and 600. If you need any help or graphics for your WWW page let me know. An STB Lightspeed Video card and STB TV card. Now, I can watch TV instaed of working. More to the point, I can feed my VCR into the system and "snap" a shot wherever I like in the stream. Resolution ends up looking like a regular digital camera. My granddaughter is very hard to catch in a good pose. With the VCR approach, I can pull a shot out of the stream just when she hits the pose. Good for action shots, airplanes, etcetra. This VCR approach works really well for keeping photo documentation on a project. Costs about 200 dollars in a good computer with PCI slots and an Intel chipset. This is a very weird part of the computer business; compatability in hardware is the key. Don't buy parts without assurance they'll work together. I had to replace my Vxpro chipset in an otherwise excellent 6x86 Cyrix system with an INTEL chipset board. The upside of the $200 is that you also have a good game video card and can watch TV full size or a small background clip. - --part0_889333649_boundary Content-ID:
