That will certainly give me an incentive give my plane done. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Nov 1998 22:27:17 -0800 From: Ross Youngblood Subject: KR: Hangar Visit N541RY Well, it's been several weeks, but I went out to the hangar today to trial fit my new canopy latch design. I am using some 1/4" dia aluminum rod bent similar to the design in one of Tony Bengelis' books to make a two pin latch system that can be opened from inside or outside the airplane. So far it looks pretty good. I had to make 4 AL brackets and route out two pieces of 1/4" aircraft plywood halves to make a latch cover. The entire assembly will attach to the longeron sill of the fuselage, then the canopy will have two L shaped latches that engage the pins. At least this is the plan so far. I've got to finish painting the black on the fwd deck for the portion of the forward deck that is inside the canopy. Then I can re-install it, and see how long the latch needs to be. (I built it oversize and can trim it to fit). The good news is that a visit to the airplane was a shot in the arm to keep me from buying somthing for a bit. I think I can take the additional money I was going to put towards a spam can, and buy some good dual instruction instead. Plus I can always change my mind later. Hope everyone had a great holiday... me, I've been playing this stupid computer game instead of working on the project. I guess I'm tired of getting messy. Kind of have to get psyched up for it. -- Ross ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 08:53:30 -0600 From: "Mark Langford" Subject: KR: aluminum supplier KRNetHeads, While working in Wales, I stumbled across an American supplier for aluminum named TubeSales (1-800-545-5000, Glen Ellyn, Illionois, qrt@tubesales.com, http://www.tubesales.com/ ). These guys will solve my problem for finding aluminum square and rectangular tubing to build my flap and aileron hinges with. The problem I've had up until now is that only 6063 (not what you want) is readily available (from Wicks and AS&S) in some of the wierd shapes that I need, such as 3" x 1.25" x .125", which is perfect for my Frise aileron hinges. They even have 4" x 2" x .125" material, so maybe I'll redesign my aileron hinges, again... The British have some pretty wild and varied sizes in 6082 too, which is why I was in Wales for the last six weeks anyway (to redesign a piece of aircraft machinery using American, rather than British, aluminum. I just got back Wednesday night. I still won't be making much KR progress for a few more weeks, as I have to rebuild not only the engine, but the transmission from my 16V Scirocco. That's OK though, since I've been dying to do a little internal customization. It's just wonderful to be back home. I'm still having problems adjusting though. One of the things that go screwed up over there was I lost that internal clanging bell that warns you when you're on the wrong side of the road. The first time I left my driveway I drove up the hill ( a very blind one) on the left side of the road before I came to my senses. I'm still groping for the shifter with my left hand when down shifting, and now I try to push on doors when entering buildings, rather than pulling. Oddly enough, they don't do "left on red" over there, but you can pass a stopped school bus unloading kids at 50 mph if you want to! And good luck finding a trash can or a water fountain over there. The lager is just about unsurpassed, however. I'd planned to do a lot in my hotel room while in Wales, but we ended up working almost 12 hours a day, 6 or 7 days a week. The good news is that I made enough in overtime and per diem to ensure that my KR is paid for already. Instruments are forthcoming. I had a productive tech counselor visit today. One of our Tech Counselors built an RV, and he came out to look at the project this afternoon. We turned out working on the project for about 3 hours, so I got lots of free help. I got some great tips on safety wiring and we safetied the hose clamps and firesleeve on the fuel line from the gascolator to the Ellison. We removed the gascolator bowl, only to find that the rubber gasket had swollen and it will no longer fit. He indicated that alcohol additives in the fuel cause the rubber to swell so that the gasket is no longer useable. The gaskets are only .90 from Aircraft spruce, but it's making me consider filling up with AVgas next time. I got some terrific tips on using tygon tubing and ty-wraps to make a shock mounted stand-off. Once I get a couple installed, I will photograph them and post it on the web. If you haven't got a pair of those safety wire pliers, they are worth the $$, they have a nifty screw assembly in the handle that makes the twisting a snap. This is one of those things that hanging around an EAA chapter will expose you to. I hadn't seen a pair in use till our last chapter meeting, and they are really cool. He also helped me come up with a solution for my mixture control. The trick is to have the arm at 90 deg mid travel. I had read this, but it was what my problem was in the design of the brackets. I hope to have this nailed next week. This was my third tech counselor visit, I think I will need two or three more before I'm through. It helps to have someone who has done this before chat with you on your problems. - -- Regards Ross ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 22:43:52 -0800 From: Ross Youngblood Subject: KR: Archives for 1998 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --------------AAAACC83DA8FA5BC1ECFEC3F Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Here is a list of the KRNET archives for 1998.
