I have one that came un glued all on its own already, don't know if it was due to a dry joint, sanding, or too much stress without a side being attached. Guess I have to cut it out and re-glue. I should start over actually, that side is one that has one of those trapezoidinal longeron specials from back when AS&S had a quality control problem during the cutting of my spruce kit. Would have been nice not to have to worry about 3 side angle matching until the bottom and top stuff. ;) Robert Covington ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Clamps and saws From: "Richard Parker" Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 04:14:23 PST X-Message-Number: 3 >From: "Dean Collette" >To: "KR-net users group" >Subject: [kr-net] Re: Clamps and saws >Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 01:08:19 -0600 >Reply-To: "KR-net users group" >Technically speaking, if you floxed all of the joints, they would, in fact, >be slightly weaker than if you just epoxied them due to the filler getting >in the way of the bonds that form between the epoxy and the wood. Good point, The west systems manual says to wet out both parts with straight epoxy first then use filler (flox) if you feel the need. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: RE: stick article From: "Mark Langford" Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 07:49:10 -0600 X-Message-Number: 4 In reponse to my stick URLs Richard Parker wrote: > they are still huge. I'm building a KR-2S,= which, as most projects, is years behind completion. I have been in avia= tion my entire (long) life & an A&P since 1967. (Started flying before that.)= I'm presently Manager of the "Backshops" (i.e. Sheet Metal, Machine, Heat Tre= at, Flight Control Overhaul, Composite & Hot Bond, and Wire Harness) at Lockh= eed Martin Aircraft Center in Greenville South Carolina. The KR project was preceded by a T-18 and a Quickie. Because of transfer= s and two cross country moves I'm way behind on building, but recently was able= to get started back. Enough about me. Have a couple hints. Saw some comments about joints in= the wood. Tony B. goes into lots that was the case before the epoxies came a= long. Good advice, but not really needed today. I highly recommend T-88 for all woodwork on the plane. Before starting, = I called the mfg. and they sent complete spec sheets. It requires no speci= al joint preparation, can be used on slightly wet wood, and will fill up to = 1/16" joint with no loss in strength. Also requires very little clamping press= ure. = Throughout construction I made several test joints, some without any clam= ping, and after 4 - 5 days cure tried to break them with a hammer while held by= a vise. Never did the joint break, it was always the wood around it. I'm outta here for now - back later with a hint for clamping the fuselage= framework while gluing. From: "Jesse Klebsch" Date: Sat, 12 Dec 1998 15:57:46 PST X-Message-Number: 7 I'm not sure if much more can go wrong on my KR-2 this week. I've got the engine all back together and it does have hydraulic lifters and adjustable rocker arms. I simply bolted them back on until i find out for sure where to set them, if at all. But now the starter has decided to give up. I was told it was an outboard boat motor starter (HAPI conversion) does anyone know which boat motor they come off, are they all the same? Where can I find one? Are they a common size on boats, mine is a bosh starter, will anything else fit? I heard there are geared (hi-tourque) starters for this also, is great plains the place for those? Does anyone else have one they aren't using? Right now i'm just looking to get back home as i'm 600 miles from school and have class monday. If I have to take one right off a boat i will- but which one? See if there is a model number and maybe check with Auto-Zone, Pep Boys, Chief Auto, they are a discount parts store, and maybe able to help. They might be able to look up OEM info and tell you what that starter originaly fit on. Good luck, and I hope you make it to school on time. To be sure, you could always have your existing starter rebuilt. They say they're spec'd on the dragonfly. They look nice in that they would allow the canopy to shift out a little as it opens (so the curved canopy rail will clear the side). Do any of you know how many they call for on the D-fly? If not maybe Mike Mimms could check it out on his hangar buddies D-fly. Two would be a lot easier to mount that three but I can't find an allowable load for the hinges to figure it out on my own. I suppose I could buy one then break it just for starters. They are plenty strong, I don't think you will break them. They work pretty slick but most of the Dragonfly builders opt for the forward hinging design because it makes it much easier for both pilot and passenger to get in and out. If you want a side hinging canopy I don't think you could find a better hinge than the ones used on the Dragonfly. -- zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Micheal Mims SP290 (Sky Pig 290) ,..Building Cowling now mailto:mikemims@home.com http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/4136/ Aliso Viejo Ca ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: starter????
