Re: Braggert ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re antennae From: "DAVID STUART" Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 23:05:04 +1300 X-Message-Number: 1 John, some very good references if you want to build your own antennae are..Homebuilt Aircraft September 1982 page 42-45..Sport Aviation January 1981 page 58-61...Sport Aviation May 1979 page 45-48.My com aerials are 1/2 wave diapoles which measure 41inches over all and 20.3 inches for each element with 1/2 inch or less spacing between the two ends where the coax joins. The big secret I have found is to use the correct coax (RG-58A/U) and nothing else. Next big secret is to use 3 Torroid coils at 1/2 inch spacing and starting 1/2 inch from the end. Keep the coax length as short as possible. I use the thin end of an old fishing rod and cut it to 38 inches long. The outer braided connection is always the lower with the center core of the coax connected to the top section sticking out of the top of the rod end by several inches so it can be bent at right angles because of space problems. My KR-2 did not have aerials installed during the building process hence the fishing rod end which is behind the seat and leaning back at the top. The wire is solid core about 1.5mm taken from an old radio mains transformer. The tested frequency is 119.00mhz with a standing wave ratio almost 1-1 and 118.00 approx 1.3-1 and about the same on 120.00mhz. The three articles listed above are the ones I get my information from to build my coms and nav antennae and they work perfectly. The designs were originaly developed by JIM WEIR for the Rutan series. Bergman Precedence: bulk Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi! I am designing sport altimetrer with barometric pressure measurement. Is enough if I measure only pressure? Does anyone have formulas for calculating altitude from pressure and temperature? Meteorologists calculate (normalize) barometric pressure from actual pressure, temperture and moisture, but I think for sport applications only pressure should be enough. Am I right? Bye. How long does it take from > start to finish? and what is the final cost when all is said and done? I am not finished yet, but nearing the end. Anyone can build a KR, you have to be patient and willing to throw away anything that is not right. You need a support system that is appropriate to your experience level. The KR-Net and people near where you live, like the local EAA Chapter. The lowest time that I have ever seen is 1200 hours, the average is about 2000 hours, the highest will be well over 3600 (when I finish, I should hold that dubious honor). If you scrounge for materials, build your own VW or Soob, maybe a low of $6000 to $8000. If you buy every pre-fab part you can find, use an aircraft engine, lots of instruments, bells and whistles, you will be pushing $20,000. -- Don Reid Bumpass, Va. mailto:donreid@erols.com KR2XL at http://www.erols.com/donreid/kr_page.htm Ultralights at http://www.erols.com/donreid/usua250.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: antennae From: Ross Youngblood Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 08:24:17 -0800 X-Message-Number: 4 John, Try http://www.landings.com to locatate aviation related stuff. I think I won the longest take-off in the short take-off contest and the farthest miss in the spot landing. For some reason Don didn't give out trophies for them. I'll credit that heavy low level air for my landing inaccuracies. I never fly in that stuff. Ross, you're still a kid, but you've got to finish the plane to win.
