Lee" Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 06:16:44 -0500 X-Message-Number: 1 Mike, There is a much bigger issue for consideration in finding a place to build your KR than power. This issue is dampness! As you begin the construction process of your KR you will be working with wood. If you have a damp work area that wood will gain moisture and hence weight. This added moisture will greatly increase the empty weight of your KR. First and formost in your consideration of a place to build a KR should be: Is it dry? Building an airplane is a task that is much bigger than any of us ever imagine. If you are going to finish than you shouldt not stack the deck against yourself. If the place that you are looking at is dry than call the electrtic company and get power installed! Sure you will spend a few hundred dollars to make that happen but it will pay you back many times over. Also, consider travel time to the shop and multi-year lease options. I don't know of anyone that finished a KR in less than a year and few that did it in less than five! Be cautious and make sure that you don't take a bad deal. $75/month seems too cheap for a garage in New York. Find out why the price is so low before you take the plunge. The purpose of building a KR is to build! If you want to fly go to the airport and rent. According to the FAA, only 10% of the builders of homebuild aircraft ever become flyers of their handywork. If you are going to beat those odds, your work area must be conveninet. That means close, dry, warm or cool as appropriate for the season, well lit, big enough to get the job done, secure and a thousand other things that are important to you. Keep your eyes open and you will make the right choice. The ultimate question is, over the year, how much time per week will you spend in the shop working? Once you figure that out divide it in half for all the unforseen problems that will crop up and decide if this place is good for you. Good luck finding a place to build your KR. From: KR2616TJ@aol.com Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 09:55:23 EST X-Message-Number: 7 Another advertisement:-).....................don't shoot, don't shoot!!!!! It's time for another announcement, The 1999 KR Gathering will be held at Lake Barkley State Resort Park in far Western Kentucky the weekend of Friday, September 24 thru Sunday, September 26. We currently still have 72 rooms available along with 4 cottages. The big thing to remember about these rooms is that (sorry for the yelling) UNUSED ACCOMMODATIONS WILL BE RELEASE ON JULY 25, 1999. RESERVATION REQUESTS RECEIVED AFTER THIS DATE WILL BE FILLED IF SPACE IS AVAILABLE. I have one cabin paid for. I also have one cabin on reserve and at this time only have a couple of people who are staying in them. If you went to last years gathering and would like to be put on the list for these two cabins, let me know within the next week or I will have to let one of them go. Be warned, if you stay in one of these two cabins, I'll probably put you to work helping out at the gathering. The number is 1-800-325-1708 and be sure and tell them you are reserving under the 1999 KR Gathering for the group rates. The identifier of the airport is 1M9, it is a 4800 foot lighted runway, course I'll probably use up all the 4800 for my spot landing. The runway is on the state park property but a ways from the lodge. They offer shuttle service 24/7 back and forth. I just talked with the airport manager and tent camping alongside your airplane is allowed for those who want to do so. No shower facilities are present, bathrooms are. The park offers, hiking, swimming, boat rental, golf, tennis, miniature golf, fishing so if you want to bring your family, there will be plenty to do on site. The lodge offers a breakfast, lunch and dinner bar but serves no alcohol, BYOB. The Saturday night banquet will be held at Ken Lake State Park Convention Room. I'll post the dinner prices when the new rates come out in about a month. If sufficient information was included in the RR plans and manual for a reasonably competent person to duplicate the prototype aircraft then there would be no need for others to step up to the plate to fill in the gaps in the documentation. Having said that, two things come to mind. Has anyone seen, let alone flown the Rand Robinson prototype KR-2S? Correct me if I am wrong but I am not aware that RR even had a prototype KR-2S. Secondly, there is not a manual for the KR-2S - just the original KR-2 manual and some supplimentary plans sheets. When was the last time someone talked to a technical person at Rand Robinson and wasn't referred to Mike Mimms, Mark Langford or some other builder? Mike, Mark and the other builders __ARE__ filling the technical support position for Rand Robinson WITH OUT COMPENSATION. It is a neat business tactic if you can keep it up and stay in business. THere has to come a point where the technical support people that are enabling Rand Robinson to stay in business step up and say enough already. I don't know the best way for the technical support, and research and development departments (read customers), that are supporting KR builders, to get compensated for their time, knowledge and efforts but this is America. It just seems reasonable for the ones that are doing the work should be able to get compensated for that work. It would seem that Trailing Edge Technologies, LLC., and any other willing entreprenours, have a furtile marketing opporitunity. Remember, this is America where if a company is ignoring its market and customers someone else will most certainly step in and serve that market. I have no connection with Mark, Dean and the others compromising Trailing Edge Technologies. Those fellows have added to each of us readers ability to learn and develop confidence in the building process that far exceeds what comes from the original suppliers. They deserve and I predict will be well compensated for all they have done and will do as regards helping builders transcend the plans to a finished project. I'll be the first in line to say that the old plans left a LOT to be desired, but the KR2S is a GOOD airplane as designed and can be built and flown inexpensively. Most of the aircraft supply houses will sell only normalized 4130, but if you buy it from a steel distributor you are liable to wind up with just about anything. Most want to sell it annealed - which is doesn't work well for aircraft use. There are also several different normalization processes. For these fittings it should be MIL-T-6736.
