On one of them you will see the infamous flip-o-matic bolted to the front of his plane. http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/4136/ I built mine using the picture off Mike's page and it worked unbelievable well. Build you a 2X4 frame with two horizontal members that are equal length as the widest part of you firewall. The two vertical members are bolted onto the ends. I made my vertical members long enough to keep my canopy just off the ground, so your length is going to be the height of your firewall plus say your horizontal stab height. The bottom goes just below the botton of your firewall. I used 3/4" plywood on the sides, cut into a half circle and screwed onto the frame using drywall screws. Place a couple of cross members out on the circle for support. Bolt the ol flip-o-matic to your firewall and you're ready. I tied a rope to my tailwheel and each of my two kids on one wingtip each. Along with one neighbor, we raised up the tail until it was sitting on it nose on the bottom of the flip-o-matic, pushed it on over using the rope on one side and me under it coming down and sat it on the vertical stab. Piece of cake. Another thing you can do is bolt on a couple of casters onto the top of the flip-o-matic so that you can flip it outside and roll in back indoors. I kidded when I did it that it was so fun we flipped it a couple more times just for the fun of it, used it on the neighbors car and the farmers tractor just because they were there:-). For example, I moved a 15 pound battery from firewall to tail and the CG shifted only about 2.3 inches. Also for kicks I plugged in the weight of a VW engine (200lbs firewall forward) and moved it forward 2 inches like everyone has done with the spacers and it moved the CG only .6 of an inch! That's POINT 6 of an inch! What does this mean? Build light and build your motor mount to make your KR balance! If you build a KR that is 4 or 5 inches to tail heavy your between a rock and a hard spot! Unless you want to build up 5 inch spacers behind your engine there isn't much you can do. This brings me to the conclusion that if a KR weighs 700 pounds or more and has a VW up front there is absolutely no way that particular KR is within the operation CG range!! I can tell you what a built, flown kr looks like and I can tell you the problems that I have had with it as far as durability and such. particularly on where the rudder horn attaches to the spar of the rudder. the builder (not me) lined the bolts up attaching the horn to the spar in a row verticaly. this caused the horn to have lots of leverage on the row of bolts, which where also installed through an uprepared hole only reinforced by a backing plate . this resulted in the bolts eating an oversized hole through the spar . To prevent this use a square bolt patern to attach the horn. any where you put bolts through wood you should not only use a backing plate but use a nutplate or some sort of capturing mechanism for the nut or when the wood expands and contracts and it will . you will find yourself with a loose bolt and a scary plane. I don' t know if you are using translation software or not or how this will sound if you are but for what it's worth you are welcome to it as well as any other information I have. bye hpnut ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Weight and Balance From: "Tom Andersen" Date: Sat, 3 Apr 1999 15:34:22 -0500 X-Message-Number: 13 Mike, This is one of the reasons I did not use the 1835cc VW motor I had. It weighed 135 lbs (no electrics) and with the prop and mount about 150lbs. I calculated I needed a 9" extension on the motor mount to get the engine to equal an 0-200 on the RR mount. I'm planning instead on using the Eggenfellner Subaru EJ25 direct drive. It's 2500cc, liquid cooled, fuel injected, full electrics, and should come out to be 230lbs with fluids and radiator, producing 100hp at 3300rpm, 3.7-4.0 gph 92 octane auto fuel consumption. With stub wing tanks I can afford a further forward CG for full fuel balancing. I'm going to make a storage compartment where the stock tank normally resides. The BRS will occupy the usual behind seat storage compartment with 24lbs of gravity there. If need be, I can put that unit under the front turtledeck. -Tom -----Original Message----- From: Mike Mims To: KR-net users group Date: Saturday, April 03, 1999 12:43 PM Subject: [kr-net] Weight and Balance >Builders, > >I was just playing with my weight and balance spreadsheet and it is >amazing to me how little the CG is affected by moving weight around! >For example, I moved a 15 pound battery from firewall to tail and the CG >shifted only about 2.3 inches.
