Well, you can go down to your lumberyard and look in the Douglas fir bin, look at 1X and find some straight-grain stuff with at least 8 rings per inch. It will be stronger than spruce, cheaper, and the only problem is that it will also be heavier... just where you _don't_ want it- aft of the CG. ;o( Probably one place to stay with spruce. I guess it just depends on what they have in stock. I would guess that 16 foot long stuff is less likely to be in stock however spar stock is probably more likely. ask to talk to the guy in charge of the lumber and he could probably tell you what they have on the shelf. It may take a while. I too was interested in using rod end bearings, and contacted the guy in the KR Newsletter article after hitting a dead end with the part numbers he gave (MB501, as I recall, or something similar). Turns out he couldn't remember where he got them, had not actually USED them yet, and his project is still unfinished after about 8 or 10 years. I never did find any that would work just right, without a little welding (which I would be hesitant to do on a sealed bearing like that). There's always something to be said for just pressing a thin regular bearing into a thick hinge member, but the more I thought about how to do it, the heavier it got...
