In a tail dragger this determines, amongst other things, the length of the main gear. The wing should be stalling just as the gear touches down in the three point attitude...otherwise you will be flying the aircraft on, ie., landing at higher speeds. Reducing incidence means longer gear thus more nose up attitude and less visibility in the flare but a benefit is better prop clearance. Life's a compromise. See Ya John. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: kr-net digest: April 15, 1999 From: "Paul W. I have to say I've been so busy since the first of the year, I started getting only the INDEX for the list so I'm possibly missing some nifty flames etc, but its easier for me to manage this way. Hope I haven't missed any important stuff. For anyone who is occasionally wondering if they will ever fly their tailwheel KR, go get checked out in a tailwheel airplane, and all the mystery will go away. I did, and I'm PUMPED about finishing my bird now. I emailed earlier about perfect landings, well those were the best, I haven't been quite able to land the Champ quite as nicely as the first 4 solos that I did (2 wheel and 2 3 point). Last Thursday I took a co-worker on a trip around the Nampa area, and have to say that the worst landing and take off so far was with my friend. One thing I can say about learning tailwheel aircraft is that I take the runway centerline much more seriously than I did in the Cessna-152. I took a C-152 up last weekend and it was real easy to keep it on the stripes. I think it's all on what you concentrate on. I've been focusing on keeping the plane on the yellow taxi line, and the stripes, and I seem to be doing better with little effort. We shall see how long that lasts. I FINALLY got around to painting my battery box, and the interior top of the forward deck black. This will reduce the glare off the inside of the top deck. (I expect). I took this out to the airport and fit the fwd deck, which allowed me to check fit my canopy latch installation. Looking reasonablly good. I then went ahead and put my "lumpy" cowling on the airplane to think about what to do with it. I was all set to head back out to the airport, when my daughter needed a ride to go skating (in 20 minutes) after this however, it's back out to the airport. This is going to be the only weekend in April I can work on the KR so I'm going to make it count. If I get my act together I could be taxiing the plane around after I get the canopy latch fitted. WOO HOO! I'm drawing up a new exhaust heat muff so I can hopefully wind up the carb heat system, and get ready for signoff. I figured out where to mount the fire extinguisher today which was one of those nagging little problems, that seemed to keep me stuck in no-whereville. I've moved my KR out of my hanger which is on my website at http://www.teleport.com/~rossy/N541RY.htm , and into a larger space, to help out the local FBO who has supported our EAA chapter. Unfortunatly, I think I got a small bit of hangar rash from the helicopter which rolls in and out... so as soon as I can taxi, the bird is taxiing back home to my old hangar. During the winter, the idea of having heat was great, but I was always out of town, so I didn't get to use the space like I had planned. I still have some stuff to do for the webpage, like update the KR-Gathering location and add Warren's KR wings and KR pendant photos to the site. Sorry to everyone but I've been balancing too much since December. Things finally came together when my '82 S10 engine got broken in this week and quit smoking oil. The 92 mile trip to PDX (Portland OR) seemed to do the trick and break in my new rings. I was worried that I was going to have to pull the engine, and that REALLY put a damper on KR work. The good news is that with no car payments, I will be able to afford the $250 for the DAR later this summer, and was able to afford taildragger instruction this month, so it hasn't been a total loss. I will take some photos and post them on the web tomorrow! -- Regards Ross ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: get From: Ross Youngblood Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 18:37:52 -0700 X-Message-Number: 12 get kr-net 168151 171483 171518 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: insurance From: Kenneth S Yellen Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 19:42:35 -0600 X-Message-Number: 13 Ok KR guys. There was a good article in kitplanes about checking out insurance before you commit to a plane. Well, Avemco evidently doesn't like kr's very much. I had a crazy idea, how about a KR-net sponsered West Coast Gathering in '00? I'm thinking that we could hold it in October in conjunction with the Copperstate Fly-In in Phoenix. We can all stay at my moms house. (Just kidding). By then, I'm sure to have my plane done, and I'm thinking about checking on a booth which we could share with Jeanette to show off the KR. We could have KR-netters volunteer for booth duty and have one or two KR's there for static display. I have no idea what this would cost, so if we don't have a booth, then perhaps just a gaggle of KR's with a big "KR-net" banner, and a barbacue. I thought I'd bring this up to see how many folks are interested. I know Jeff Scott was at the Copperstate fly in last year. Jeff, could you comment on it's suitability? That rate was applied prior to the first flight and has not changed. I've found it to be comparable with other homebuilts of that class incluing the GlasAirs and Lancairs. If your plane is a taildragger, you get penalized for your low time and again as a low time taildragger pilot. As you build time, your tailwheel time counts double weighted against the insurance discounts for higher time pilots flying a taildragger. The insurance discounts start to happen around 500 hours flight time and go in 500 hour increments. If you are insuring a taildragger, and you have 750 total time and 250 taildragger time, then you qualify for the 1000 hour pilot discount. This year I have 1100 hours total time and 1000 hours taildragger, so I should qualify for the 2000 hour pilot discount rate on my KR. I guess I don't understand why you would want hull insurance on a KR. If you break it, as the builder you would also fix it wouldn't you? Maybe not. Finding a shop to do quality fiberglass and wood work can be difficult. Most A&P mechanics that work on the Cessna, Beech, Piper and Mooney lines couldn't tell you the difference between VinylEster, PolyEster, and Epoxy resins. If you have built a KR, you'll know the qualities of each down to the brand name. :o) Jeff Scott - Los Alamos, NM mailto:jscott.pilot@juno.com See N1213w construction and first flight at http://www.thuntek.net/~jeb/krjeff.htm ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
