I also think it looks quite a bit better than the other planes you mentioned. As far as the pitch sensitivity, I think the KR is a plane you have to adjust to. I don't see it very much different than other high performance planes. When you are transitioning to a new type of aircraft you must have a sign-off. I had a harder time flying a helicopter than I did flying the KR. If it was really that hard, then it would make sense that you would have to stay very current. I just went up Monday in my KR and greased on three landings. I hadn't flown it, or anything else, in the last 8 months. It is my opinion that if you build it right, pay close attention to the weight and balance, and finally get some stick time you will not have a problem. I looked at the "Tiny Tach" for my 1835 VW with single mag and no electric system. They have several models, all digital, which read out RPM when engine is running, and show total hours when it's not. They are cheap and simple, but I wanted something that looked like a conventional tach (I don't get a good mental image of what my engine is doing when I look at a digital readout). I also wanted something that would give me tachhours, because with no electrics I can't run a regular Hobbs. I got Westach's (free) catalog because I couldn't find what I wanted in the other catalogs, which was originally a mechanical tach that I could adapt to the VW somehow. I wanted a standard-looking, 270-degree-sweep unit, not the 90-deg. sweep automotive looking unit. Anyway, Westach has one which is non-electric and runs off the P-lead, and which has engine hours on it too. I didn't want to risk jury-rigging anything to my (single) magneto, and figured that the Westach was designed to do what it does with no "tricks". It is recommended to have a fuse inline, but that is there to protect the tach, not the magneto. And forget about Westach's printed catalog prices; they actually charged me what AS&S or the other suppliers charge for their stuff, and for a few dollars more I went ahead and had them put custom range markings on it for me; I got the RPM range recommendations for the GP 1835 right out of the Great Plains catalog data. BTW I've got 2 sets of brakes for free if anyone is interested. one set are the mechanical disc brakes I mentioned a month or so ago and the other set is the original drum type mechanical brakes. I think I originally got them from Dana Overall. Original KR parts seem to circulate around the KR-net as much as e-mail ( but not as much as e-mails on which supplier is better - AS+S or Wicks). I just gave a set of original retracts to Mike Mims. The darker the color the hotter the epoxy becomes on a hot sunny day. Since the fuselage of a KR is wood, I would assume that you have far greater flexability for creative color selection here. I still would paint the glassed structures white. At last years gathering there were KRs painted white, light blue, yellow and metallic mauve (sp?) and other colors that I have forgotten. THe safe bet is to use white on the composite structures though. I don't think I would recommend the black paint scheme that Michael Campbell's latest "Primal Fear", on this months Sport Aviation cover, sports - but I still think it is a way cool paint job. I quess it worked for them, but we are not working with pre-preg. I guess the question should be do you want to take a chance on de lamination, the chance of de lamination especially in the hot sun of Florida or the west coast is probably a real concern. I'd say white or a light color would be a better option. IMHO! Has anyone who is flying check the temp. inside their fuselage after a day of the aircraft sitting in the sun? Your biggest problem would be deformation when the skin temp is elevated to a much higher temp than when it was originally wetout/cured. It does happen so be advised! I once saw a Quickie that was left out in the sun with black plastic over the canard. This was the builders idea of "post curing". Well when the builder returned from lunch his fuselage was about 6 inches closer to the pavement and the top skin on his "ready to paint" canard was wrinkled all the &$#@!! A RV owner at Chino decided it couldn't hurt to paint his "non structural" fiberglass wing tips dark blue. Well he flew on down to Copper state for the weekend. This was the first time the plane had been parked outside for an extended period. His wing tips looked like they were doing the wave! All that being said me and the wife finally decided on a Paint Scheme. You can see it at: http://members.home.com/mikemims/paint.html There are various circumstances that brought us to this decision that I wont bore you with but the reasons are good I assure you. I wanted to keep this a secret but the scheme has grown on me and I think its rather cool looking. I just had to share the idea and it fits the airplane in a way. -- zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Micheal Mims Filling and Sanding again! http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/4136/ http://members.home.com/mikemims/ Aliso Viejo CA ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Re: retract gear on the KR-2S From: Mike Mims Date: Fri, 04 Jun 1999 20:03:19 -0700 X-Message-Number: 29 Didactics1@aol.com wrote: > > But one item that I am more decided upon is performance > to be gained with retractable main gear, >>> Unless you design a very clean fully enclosed retractable gear you will have a performance loss. At the speeds we fly retractable gear pretty much just has lots of "cool factor" and nothing more. The Fixed gear KR2s are a little bit faster and lighter than the KR2s with the Rand retracts. Take it from someone who has put the gear up a few times, you cant see how cool you are sitting inside the airplane! :o) -- zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Micheal Mims Filling and Sanding again! http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/4136/ http://members.home.com/mikemims/ Aliso Viejo CA ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Dumb question of the week. I sent him an email yesterday about the black eye that AS&S is getting on various builder list and needless to say he is VERY interested in hearing what's happening. So if you can think of other list that you have heard complaints about AS&S let me know so I can forward this info on to him. If in fact you have had a problem or two, take the time to tell the PR man! Send it too: spruce@deltanet.com Attn Jerry Aguilar. First is the hassle getting them made - been all through that. So now we get to the point that we can actually sell them and . . Get this, I sent the package to Kyle, and the post office mashed the box. A bundle of the smaller WAFs is missing!! Since he has no idea which ones are actually gone, he has to mail one back to me, so that I can figure it out and replace the missing ones. I thought about having him measure the fitting, but since the difference is very slight (we'd get it screwed up - I just know it) this seems to be the best way. Now I get the job of trying to recover some money from the USPS - yeah, like that's going to happen. Mark - did you ever get those WAFs I sent?
