I bought one that was a turbo but a burst oil line smoked the turbo. The guy said he just squeezed off the oil line , refilled it with oil and it worked fine. I stripped it then had a pro shop do the rebuild. It turned out the bearings were scored and so was the oil pump. Both replaced. There was also a crack around one exhaust valve. My favourite mechanic tells me that turbo engines wear out a lot faster than standard engines so some of the wear was to be expected. We replaced the cupped pistons with standard ones and reground the cam so I now have a standard ea81 with hydraulic lifters and mpfi. Haven't got around to running the engine yet. That comes this winter. The lesson I learned is be a bit cautious about flying behind any used engine. Check them out thoroughly. I still think the soob is a good engine. Second hint is don't buy an engine until the rest of the plane is ready. Same with instruments. Save the exensive parts till the last. W.G. I have flown it with all combinations- only on the mains, only on the nose, all off, all on, etc. Always 5 MPH per. With a guaranteed 15 MPH, I dont see why anyone wouldn't want them.
