Believe me, it ain't cheap to put this thing on so any donations will be appreciated. The barbecue Friday night is catered and will cost you something like $5.00 per dinner. The lodge offers a great morning breakfast bar for Saturday morning. The banquet will cost $15.00 per person. Long range weather forecast (now let's see, where is that rock on a string) calls for partly cloudy, high in the low seventies. Should be good flying with low MSL, low humidity and low temps. From: "Oscar Zuniga" Date: Mon, 20 Sep 1999 05:29:26 PDT X-Message-Number: 2 Hello, netters I missed Friday, so I hope a commercial isn't out of line here. Just a reminder that anybody wearing their KRNet shirt to the Gathering is automatically entered in the contest where the grand prize winner gets Troy's Revmaster engine in a drawing Saturday evening. Just kidding! The only prize is you get to stand out from the rest of the crowd. Seriously, I'm out of size Large and X-Large and was going to put together another shirt order (after telling myself I'd never get involved in a deal like this again ;op) but thought I'd better check to see if anybody else is interested before I order stuff. I have to order in batches of 6 items, and it looks like I'll be ordering a dozen in this order. Email me direct... not to KRNet... if you are interested in a shirt, or if you want more info. I spoke with Paul Martin on Saturday. He had been up flying his KR, and sounded pretty high (it isn't the Oregon air... it's got too much smoke from No. Calif. forest fires). He is loving flying that airplane, and is into the second 20 hrs. of his fly-off time. Everything looks good so far; stalls, slow flight, landing, cruise. We seem to be having a few extra weeks of summer here, so maybe the weather will hold until he gets that magic sign-off. Last night we finished the paint on my "Saturn Rocket" version of the KR2. Got to know that I'm moving heaven and earth to try to make it but I would need a miracle I think. Have fun if I don't make it there, I'll be buying a video for sure. Are any or you flying from the east coast to the gathering with an empty passenger seat? Ashok is now an associate professer at NC State in Raleigh North Carolina. We are trying to work out travel and room arrangements so he can attend. There were some rooms that became available recently - are any of them still available? THis is the guy that designed the AS504x series airfoils for us - I would love to help out any way we can so he can see the results of his work. THis will also give all of you a chance to talk to him personally. It doesn't look like Dr. Selig will be able to make the Gathering this year but he is planning on being there next year to see all of the KR's flying with the new wing. If Ashok has to fly commercial, I will seed the kitty with a $50 donation to help cover his expenses. Anyone else building with his airfoils care to chip in? Surely there are enough of us using the AS504x series airfoils that we should be able to get enough $20 contributions to cover his expenses. It is a limited racing version of the Corvair. I have owned many of them over the years, and I feel that the 164 CID engine ('65-'69) will make an excellent aircraft engine. They have been used before with good results in several different kinds of homebuilts. It will weigh about 200lbs, dry in aircraft form, about the same as a 100 hp Lycoming or Continental. Less in some cases, and about 20 lbs more than a flyable Rotax 912 with radiator and fluids. There is a gentleman who offers a conversion manual for aircraft use, and parts, such as cam, prop hub etc. I haven't seen the manual, but he seems to know what he is talking about on his website. Some of the specs: Length 30 in Width 28.5 in Compression: 8:1 100hp @ 3200 RPM 90 hp @ 3000 RPM, which is 50% of the turbo version's rated hp ('65-'66) 160 ft/lbs torque @ 2800 All the late model cases, crankshafts, bore and stroke were the same, so running at 90hp continuous would be absolutely no problem. It details covering my first wing with carbon fiber. It was a real ordeal, considering it was a 5 hour job and Aeropoxy's working time is only 30 minutes. I have a new respect for those who've built their own wings. It's certainly doable, but requires a little planning to pull it off. It came out rather smooth too, thanks to careful foam sanding. I'm hoping to get away with only a few coats of primer, rather than filling the whole thing and sanding my life away. Finishing the plane has become a higher priority than the finish on the plane... I stripped the entire plane down to the "boat" leaving the tail section and wing stubs alone. The project is going great but I am worried about the integrity of the forward and aft main spars, no particular reason (I guess for peace of mind). Is there any way to place a "load" on the spar to see that it will hold? How much weight for the forward spar? The aft spar? I have placed stands under them at the outboard edge of the wing stubs and walked on the spars; they seem solid! Are there any Engineers out there who can offer ideas? Are there reinforcements that should be added? How about testing the wings spars? I also need a used prop, hub, spinner for an 80hp 3600rpm VW. Using doug fur, I have been able to produce 181" longeron material. Since the plans use 145.5" ones, I have the opportunity to make mine 35"+/- longer. So if you could make it longer, how much longer and where would you add it? My gut says 35" is a little too much. At this point, I'm inclined to add 2 more inches in front of the front spar (total of 4 more than the stock plain KR2) and one more 14" section on the tail. It is going to be about 4" wider, maybe a little more, haven't figgured out how to gently ask my wife to sit next to me so I can find out how fat er wide we are. Whatta ya think?
