Sounds like you had a great time and my congratulations to the award winners....well deserved. Back to business. Are there any comments on a control rod system for the elevator that takes off the bottom of the stick with 5/8 tube, goes under the rear spar(space because of raising to get 2 1/2 degrees incidence) to the bottom of a reverser mounted behind that spar, thence via a 1 1/4 rod from the top of the reverser direct to the elevator control arm mounted downwards from the elevator spar? This does away with cables and pulleys and seems much simpler. There is sufficient room at the rear to get adequate elevator movement but the tube must pass through the centre lower of the ply support webs for the stabiliser attach. Does anyone have drawings for something similiar that I could purchase and submit for approval in Australia? He's an EAA Tech Inspector, builder, and overall nice guy. He knows VWs very well. Although he is out of Independence, OR (near Salem) he has several airplanes and I'll bet he'd be willing to fly to where you are to help you out. He flew his Tri-Pacer about 400 mi. just so he and his buddy could give my little project a tech inspection. All I did was buy him lunch. It would have been closer to do West Texas (only 1169 SM, and a day shorter each way!), but what the heck... if I leave Medford at noon on Tuesday, I can be tied down and camped at Lake Barkley by Thursday evening. It's that "going back" part that will get long. I can't give rides in the M-19, and a high-speed pass will be at the Vne of 95, but I should be able to put it down just about anywhere. I did what you're talking about, but used a cable for the long run between rear spar and elevator. It's at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/kcontrol.html . I weighed all the parts (as Tony Bengelis recommended) and the cable setup was much lighter. You could do this same setup with a push rod though. Just connect to the top of the bellcrank instead of the bottom, and things are a lot easier to get to. FWIW, I'd use a steel elevator bellcrank if I could do it over again. That gap under the spar is provided by decreasing the incidence to one degree, and is far less for the RAF48 than with the AS5046 due to the different shape of the wing. Running it through the center of the aft spar web is perfectly acceptable, since there's not much stress on the spar inside the fuselage. I just got off the phone with the Lake Barkley Resort Asst. Manager and group reservations. I'll be posting some dates in the next couple of days. As far as locations for the gathering in 2001, it will be hosted by someone other than me. One of great things about this gathering is we do get to travel around and see different places........and get to hang out at the airport. When I got back I saw the posts concerning Texas. The attendees at the banquet determine the location of the following years event. This has grown into such a large event, one needs to already have done prior work in order to be voted as the next years host. I will tell everyone this.................Larry has already done a lot of work in trying to host the event in southern Illinois for 2001 and will receive my motion. This is my personal feelings only, but the central US provides an opportunity for people from the majority of states to attend with little effort. Everyone wants the gathering close to them but you really need to take everyone's location into consideration in determining the location. Thanks go out to everyone that attended the gathering, it was you that made the gathering the success that it was. Man, what a weekend it was. I video taped all of the seminars. Sorry I didn't get a picture of the composite forum, Dana's Smooth Prime thing, or of Rick Junkin's "First Flight" forum. I guess I got distracted. And if anybody has a picture of Ken Thomas's Weber carbureted Soob engine, I'd sure like a copy of it, since I missed it entirely. But I DID videotape all of the seminars. They are nothing like the quality of what Video Bob does, but I promise you can at least HEAR the guys talking. I just turned on the camera and let it go. I'm not even sure if William Wynne was in front of the camera most of the time, but you can still hear his jokes. But if anybody wants one, I'll do a little editing of my 8mm video and put it on a VHS tape and mail it out for $25 (which would include shipping). Just call me greedy. Rick Junkin's alone would be worth that. If you want a PAL one, we'll have to see if Bob can translate those. And the forums are all that's on it. If somebody else videotaped it and wants to sell it for less it won't hurt my feelings, but it takes a little time to do this and mail them and I'm not nice enough to spend perfectly good airplane-building time to do it for free. I thought about letting Bob sell these, but if I were him, I wouldn't want my name on it. email me PRIVATELY!!!!!!!!!!!! ps, I know this is selling stuff on a day other than Friday, but I consider it to be more of a service than a profit making affair. Besides, I'd probably forget about it if I waited til Friday... Dana, Thank YOU for a great event. It was just too short. You know, I've had a set of KR2 plans for 25 years, I've seen and touched several KR2's at one time or another, I've even sat in Ken Rands original KR2 at Oshkosh, I've talked to both Ken and Stu Robinson, but this is the first time I actually stood by the runway and saw a KR fly. I only saw them a few times when I was in the military and once about 2 years ago someone stopped by my hanger with two of them in his truck bed. The guy with the two in his truck said that the cases had to be changed to use them in airplanes also. That's about all I know. Maybe there is more info on the web somewhere.
