EAA Technical Counselor Program The EAA Technical Counselors are volunteers who inspect aircraft under construction by amateur builders. There should be a minimum of three Technical Counselor visits during the construction phase of the project to ensure the safety of the project. Technical Counselors are primarily "another set of eyes" to look over your project from time-to time to check for that missing cotter key; to be sure you are using the right nuts on structures; to check for improper use of self-locking nuts in rotating assemblies, etc. The Technical Counselor Program has been in effect and active for over 30 years now and has been very effective in enhancing the safety of amateur-built aircraft. It has also been very helpful in ensuring that the builder presents a complete and airworthy aircraft to the FAA for inspection. At this time there is only one final inspection prior to flight. This inspection is conducted by either the FAA or a Designated Airworthiness Representative (DAR). It is strongly recommended that the builder keep detailed construction records along with photographs to assist the FAA inspector or the DAR. The FAA also recommends in Advisory Circular AC20-27D that a Technical Counselor visit the project from time-to-time to help make the job easier and ensure safety. The leading insurance company, AVEMCO, will provide a 10% discount to those builders who can show that they have had a minimum of three Technical Counselor visits during the construction phase of the project. This is just further evidence of the confidence that AVEMCO has in the effectiveness of the Technical Counselor program. For the address of the closest Technical Counselor to you, contact EAA Information Services, P.O. Box 3086, Oshkosh, WI. 54903. Or you can call Information Services at 414/426-4821. I have a standard KR2 with what I consider a rather heavy engine installation (127kg). Total empty weight is 340kg, battery is located behind the passenger seat and weights in at 10kg. The engine is a watercooled VW and is mounted 7" from the firewall with the flywheel forward. Datum reference is from the prop hub, weights are 175kg left wheel and 174kg on the right. Weight on the tailwheel is -5kg. Arm to the main wheels is 53" and to the tailwheel 169". Standard RG gear installed. CG locations are as follows: Empty weight CG is 51,3" from datum. (about 3" in front of forward limit) Forward and rearward CG extremes CG 56,7" from datum (10 liters of fuel in header tank and 82kg pilot) CG 60,5" from datum ( 10 litres of fuel and 82kg pilot and 80kg passenger) CG 55,98 from datum (40 litres of fuel and 82kg pilot) CG 59,7 from datum (40 litres fuel and 82kg pilot and 80kg passenger) Most forward limit is 54" from datum and rear limit is 62". CG is at 58". All oil and coolant included. Test pilot reported that the plane was quite stable but flew with a very noise down attitude (test pilot weight was 64kg with 30litres fuel). No problem with flare in the landing. No stall and spin tests done because of engine problems. Plane only flew for 15 minutes. We now have 12 confirmed attendee's. ------------------------------------------- A few of us KR builders up in Western Canada (who did not make it to this years KR gathering. I'm going next year!) are planning a 1 day KR builders day in Calgary on November 13. Some of us have never met another KR builder. Hell... I've never seen a live (touchy feely) KR past the boat stage. Henning Mortensen (Regina, Saskatchewan henning_work@hotmail.com ) and myself (Rick Hubka Calgary, Alberta rick@hubka.com ) have talked about getting together since our first emails back in March of this year. So we are inviting any KR builder who: - lives in Western Canada - also any builder who might be in the Calgary vicinity traveling at that time. - also any KR builder anywhere who'd travel the distance to meet us for a 10 hour KR day. Place: 65 Butler Crescent NW Calgary, Alberta, Canada H: (403) 284-5126 C: (403) 816-7458 Time: Saturday November 13th, 1999 10am to 8pm Most of the time will be in my garage ( 32' X 24' heated with a bar fridge) with my KR boat and a dozen chairs! Henning and I have come up with a tentative agenda which is majorly flexible. Agenda Jean Peters ( Mr. Sitka Spuce) owner of Western Aircraft Supplies will be in attendance. 10:00 am - Arrive and do the hi/hello thing - Hot Wire a couple of 1 Ft sample wings ( I just got the $27.00 Hot Wire Kit from A.S.) 1 hour - Apply some filler to a dent in one. Drink beer & chat while filler dries 12:00 BBQ burgers & dogs and more beer. 13:00 - Sand the filler & foam ( may need a blow dryer to dry it) *** Adrian Carter ( a veteran & KR2 Builder) has accepted the invitation to do the glassing demo!!! - Apply a layer of fiberglass to one mini wing - 1 hour - Apply a layer of Carbon fiber to the other- 1 hour 15:00 - Open discussion about the new airfoil and check out the WAF's & new airfoil templates from T.E.T. - Drink more beer and check out the new Dragon Fly Canopy (It just arrived today) - Drink more beer and send a group message to KR-Net telling the boys what we're up to. Discuss engines ( I've got my 110 HP corvair engine), wings, composites, instruments, control hardware, wood, etc....... 18:00 - Walk ( because we've had too much beer) to one of a few nice restaurants within 10 min's walk. - Have a nice dinner... more KR talk... more beer... 20:00 - Take a taxi/cab to a hotel if you've had too much beer or I can accommodate 2 guests in my house. We were hoping to attract about 12 builders for our KR day and have done that, but could squeeze in 1 or 2 more. Requirements - BYOB and buy your own dinner at the restaurant. I'll have a plentifull supply of free ( dot 5% beer). That's my building beer!! If you'd like to come or want more info please email me "privately"... (NOT KRNET). I'll post this message again about once every 2 weeks with an update and try not to use up too much bandwidth and mailbox space. Prevention is easier than cure. My FAA medical just became very difficult to obtain. I am 52 yrs old. Last February I found out I had 2 coronary arteries over 80% clogged and had to have them opened by angioplasty. I had no family history of coronary artery disease and my blood pressure and cholesterol were always below normal. I was always active and in fact was exercising aerobics last December. This disease came without warning. I conclude that it was mostly my lousy diet that did me in. I was a regular junk-food junkie: cheeseburgers, fries, pizza, cakes, pies etc. So don't think that you are immune to the problem. I could have avoided it if I was smart. (By the way it is a predominantly male problem). I now eat buffalo burgers and skip the cheese and fries. I am now feeling great and reapplied for my medical last week with a mountain of paperwork to prove that I am now OK. I think it will be approved. The material is 1" so all you do is take it to a machine shop and have them turn up 8 of them, along with drilling the bolt hole. This gives you the ability to move the engine 1 or 2", depending on what you need. This is very light weight to produce ( or modify), and will not effect the cruise performance. This new leading edge is good for lowering the stall by 5 - 10 knots, if I remember right. I have attached an example (not to scale), that is a visual representation only, of the concept. The standard convention is to measure the pitch at 75 percent of blade length out from prop hub. Do a little bit of trigonometry on the measured geometric angle and you get the measured pitch. This is supposed to correspond to the distance that the prop would advance through the air in one revolution. It is close, but not exact. There are uncertainties when the prop maker uses different airfoil profiles in the blade. Some airfoil sections make better propeller, but are more difficult to make. The sweep of the prop along the length (is it straight or curved) can make a big difference in the efficiency. The "normal" prop airfoil section is based on a Clark-Y, which is flat bottomed and easy to make. The 75 percent rule of thumb started with that type since it was easy. More and more props are being made with new and improved airfoils. Geometric pitch is a rule-of-thumb and a guideline. It is only a true comparison between props from the same maker. -- Don Reid Bumpass, Va. mailto:donreid@erols.com KR2XL at http://www.erols.com/donreid/kr_page.htm Ultralights at http://www.erols.com/donreid/usua250.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: elevator trailing edge stiffness From: "Austin Clark" Date: Fri, 8 Oct 1999 16:37:13 -0500 X-Message-Number: 28 -----Original Message----- From: smithr To: KR-net users group Date: Friday, October 08, 1999 4:10 PM Subject: [kr-net] elevator trailing edge stiffness >After cure and sanding off the bottom urethane I noticed that the trailing edge, >which is now very thin, is not very rigid and can be easily twisted with my >hands. >Bob Smith, making progress one day at a time Bob, I had the same problem and I think several other builders also. Bob, I'm sure youi've seen it, but at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/kvs.html you can see how I stiffened up my rudder trailing edge (like I did the elevator) by scraping away the last inch or so of foam and replacing it with a micro/flox mixture, then adding an extra layer of 2" wide 9 oz fiberglass tape to each side. I then sandwiched the whole mess between two aluminum angles to make it perfectly flat and straight. I believe I could use it to chop wood. It's just about hangar-rash proof. A 1.5" overlap is probably enough, but 2" would be better. By upper I mean it is above the top longerons and goes back about 16" towards the rear of the plane. There is a 6" wide flat structure ( the structural Brace above) that is in front of it that the hinged seat back rests against. The bottom of the seat back is hinged with two 12" piano hinges with two pull pins like a RV6 engine ccowling so you can very easily remove the seat back if you want or just tilt it forward to look underneath. My seat back is made with 5/8 x 5/8 spruce frame and 1/8 inch birch plywood covering. I just let this lean against the horizontal brace and it works great. Be sure and allow plenty of tilt room when glueing in your cross brace. You could make it adjustable very easily by attaching bracket at top to set angle of tilt. It is cut to fit inside of the longerons ( side to side ) about half way back from seat back to front of vertical stabilizer. My Moms doctor told her to eat one raw carrot per day to clear arteries. The caratene ( spelling not sure of ) in carrots is what works. Caratene Pills are available but not as good as the fresh carrots. Since my moms problem several years ago I have talked to several people who have cleared their arteries with fresh carrot juice. Try it, its sweet and and grows on you if you know what I mean.
