No wonder my skin turned blue-green!(a sign of cyanosis) All kidding aside, Steve is correct. Don't try this test at home. You can hotwire some foam, but not all. I have not laughed so hard since I watched "Grumpy old Men" for the first time. Keep it up this was an unanticipated bonus when I came on the net. Lets all thicken up our skin this is better than the comedy club! >> I would not disagree with you here as I am pretty much thick skinned too. But, the main purpose of this list is to provide a forum for builders, would be builders and just people who have an interest in KR2S plane. It seems everytime we have an episode of 'Grupmy old Men' some experienced buiders leave which diminishes the usefulness of the list. Also, people stop posting progress reports and other related milestones in their flying or non flying life. This keeps the list interesting and builder motivation up. As far as I am concerned, I am going to keep posting the progress reports as they happen. Which, means I need to get up and get going to Chino and bug Mike to help me drill my spars. See ya all later. Haris mailto:hashraf@aol.com Boat and spars done ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Painting with spray cans? From: GARYKR2@cs.com Date: Sat, 13 Nov 1999 10:36:45 EST X-Message-Number: 3 All the advice about dark colors is correct. I have two black strips,6in wide on the outer part of the wings. When in the summer sun, these get hot enough to fry an egg. It's cooking the foam and glass, so when I repaint the wings this winter, as much as they look good , they won't be put back on. And yes I will be using RUST-O-LEOM in spray cans. I'm just waiting on the snow so I have a reason to stop flying. I'll do updates as I do the painting. I'm going to try using the oil cooler. No reason it shouldn't work the same as the heater core in a car. An engine sheds 30% of its heat thru oil. That's why it is important to use good oil and keep the sump full. I'm heading to the airport now to install the ducting. I never seem to get done trying new ideas. Hope to work most of them out now , befor putting them in the twin KR. I'll give a report sunday night how it worked. I'm a first time builder. Very little work has been done on the kit, but what is done should be cut up for smaller parts. It came with the retractable gear, so am interested in to pros and cons of that type of gear. Also any other tips. Thanks Gaylon (NM) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: new kr2 builder From: "Ken Jordan" Date: Sat, 13 Nov 1999 9:36:16 X-Message-Number: 6 The decision to use fixed gear or retract is up to you. I chose retract because I didn't think I'd ever be able to afford a factory retract aircraft. Also fixed gear was still in design. There are two negatives to the retract system per the plans: 1)Mousetrap gear latch mechanism is of questionable utility. This problem seems to be eliminated by a pin latch mechanism described in the May 1989 KR Newsletter. 2)Ground clearance for the prop is only 7 inches On the positive side of retract gear: 1)Theoretically there is less drag than fixed gear. Many will dispute this because some of the wheel on the retract hangs down when retracted. Don Betchan made a mod to eliminate this. 2)There is better visibility on the ground because of the short gear legs. I'm sure others will have additional comments. Especially those that are in the spruce cutting stage. Several years ago I bought a used 10" bandsaw at a salvage store. Last week end, it finally gave up the ghost and is not repairable. I am shopping for another one, but in the meantime, I needed to do some precision cutting. I cut a slit in my work table just wide enough for a jig saw blade and mounted the jig saw under the table with the blade sticking up through this slit. I used two countersunk screws to mount it. I double nutted the screws so they would not vibrate loose and started cutting. Works like a charm. I had some old 14k gold jewelry and sent it to him to cast me a set of KR wings and my wife a KR pendant. I just received them today and am truly pleased with his work! These are beautiful pieces and will be worn proudly. The pendant will be one of my wife's Christmas presents. Thanks Warron for doing such a great job. That old gold jewelry laying around finally will be used again. Warron Gray can be reached at mailto:warrong@bellsouth.net if you would like some of his excellent craftsmanship. I see no other way to get them in except to cut out some glass & foam from each side of the hinge (about 3 inches x .5" and about 1 x .5) from the elevator leading edge underside. Is this correct? Any suggestions on filling the holes after? It consisted of aluminum foil sandwiched between 2 layers of closed-cell rubber. I believe it came in about 1/8 inch thickness. Sorry, I don't have the address for more info. Fill the hole with foam, sand smooth and paint a thin layer of micro and resin on the foam. Sand again and put on a patch of cloth, overlaping the original glas by at least 2 inches. A coat of resin and then another coat of micro and resin and you'll never see the patch. Be sure to scuff up the original glas so the resin will grab. When I patch a hole, I usually cut the glas in a circle. Seems to blend better with no sharp corner edges. Good luck, Bob ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Web page updated.
