I know that it is possible to make your own canopy. It must be because I read some of the material. I tried, and the best thing that I can say about the experience is that I did not burn down my shop. I think that it is an art and requires skill, practice, and more than a little luck. -- Don Reid Bumpass, Va. mailto:donreid@erols.com KR2XL at http://www.erols.com/donreid/kr_page.htm Ultralights at http://www.erols.com/donreid/usua250.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Canopy's From: "Robert Smith" Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1999 08:52:52 -0500 X-Message-Number: 5 Probably one of the best decisions I made in the construction of my KR was to NOT try to make the canopy. I bought a dragonfly and have not (yet) regretted it. With all the many other things you must do to make a KR, try to eliminate some work where you can and you will get the project done a lot faster. I thought that I could make my wing attach fittings. After lots of wasted time and $ fooling around I wish that I had just bought them in the first place. I think a good rule of thumb is to only fabricate where you feel you absolutely must if you want to get your project finished in this lifetime. I live in a major metropolitan area where the only option is a tiedown at various commercial airports where the most they would let me do would be to put a tarp over the plane, and I do not have a garage (or a car). If I understand right, some people on this list have stored KR's outdoors for years with just tarps for protection, so apparently it is a possible choice for me for a homebuilt. Spruce is one of the least rot-resistant woods there is, so chemical protection also sounds like a good idea. I've never seen him put anything over it. Ever. The finish is still good. My only comment here is that if you can put a tarp over it, you might be better off in the long run to do so. The only caveat, and that was given to me by more than a few EAA types around here, is don't use plastic tarps. Not sure why though. Canvas might be a bit rough, but being that the KR is quite small, all things considered, fabricating (pun) a nylon coat for everything might be an attractive item, both visually and practically. - Cary - -Cary Honeywell - Ottawa Ontario Canada caryh@home.com ve3ev@rac.ca Home page http://24.112.208.98/welcome.shtml KR2 area http://24.112.208.98/kr2/kr2.shtml -----Original Message----- From: Michael Taglieri To: KR-net users group Cc: kr-net@telelists.com Date: Wednesday, December 22, 1999 8:57 PM Subject: [kr-net] Re: Shelter for the KR >Suggestions like these could be valuable for people who want to haul >their planes home to the garage -----snip----- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Shelter for the KR From: Mike Mims Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1999 22:54:39 -0800 X-Message-Number: 10 Cary Honeywell wrote: > My only comment here is that if you can put a tarp over it, you might be better off > in the long run to do so. Someone had asked if I had ever uncovered a plane in the dead of winter after a winter storm. Unfortunately I have done this way to many times. The best covers you could make for up north would be some sort of nylon or heavy dacron. Snow and frozen water (snow that melted and re-froze) doesn't seem to stick to it as well as it does to canvas. Make custom covers for all parts, fuselage, horizontal tail and each wing. You could make the section that covers the cockpit water proof and that would help a lot. The best way to get snow and ice off of planes that are parked outside is to use buckets of hot water. Unfortunately I don't think this would work out that well on a airplane built of something other than aluminum. -- zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Micheal Mims Sanding and Filling AGAIN! :o( http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/anchor/270/ mirror @ http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/4136/ http://members.home.com/mikemims/ Aliso Viejo CA ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ --- END OF DIGEST --- You are currently subscribed to kr-net as: johnbou@ipinc.net To unsubscribe send a blank email to leave-kr-net-110995W@telelists.com
