Like anything in an aircraft, this change impacts several other things. Submitted for your consideration: the fuselage does not lift. It needs a trailing edge to support the Kutta condition. That is why wings have reasonably sharp edges in the back. But the fuselage DOES accelerate the flow over the wings, which increases lift. I remember seeing a plot of lift loss due to fuselage size vs. wing span, and it is a fat bell-shaped curve because of this effect. Have you ever seen a fat GB racer fly? Also check out several missle designs (some not so high speed) that cruise pretty good. Not to mention twin-engine GA piston planes that have little real wing area. I could go on and on about the importance of the wing-fuselage interface and lift, but we have a basic configuration that won't change drastically in that area. So take a few inches on the inboard wing in the sure knowledge that it only affects the wing bending moment slightly, the lift slightly, the drag slightly, and (hopefully) the weight slightly. I'm thinking that if we got smart we could band together and do some group purchases from Rand, Great Planes and Wicks to get a slight price break, and if no price break, at least good delivery. Since much of this business is cottage industry in nature, having a large order will make it work folks business. If anyone wants to volunteer to work on a webpage for managing this let me know, I can coordinate the cgi scripts and other stuff with Teleport. You can email me the .html pages/perl scripts java or whatever, and I will install it for trying out. We have the webspace I just don't have the time. I'm unwilling to let the krnet password go to folks I just met over email, so I will act as gatekeeper until I get to know whomever the new volunteers might be. If someone is interseted in working with me on this... I'm in the process of learning Java now, so I'm interested in working with somone on Java stuff. This seems like it would be easier than cgi as we wouldn't have to wait for our ISP to enable the stuff. Also, I'd like to get a copy of the web stuff that has members by state. The last time I linked to somones stuff, the page moved... I don't have time to update the website... If you can update the content of krnet.org and email me the stuff back, I would be happy to support this! I also would be interested in getting some folks who want to be Lyris gurus to go nuts with some of the features in Lyris, for example we can have topics emailed to people if they send the right string to kr-net (I think this is right). I'm too busy to do the work myself but with 500 members there has to be someone out there interested in making this happen, and being a KR-net star. Send me an email mailto:rossy@teleport.com and tell me if you are interested in one of the following KR-net volunteer positions: KR-net Lyris Guru Improve the Lyris greetings, update the FAQ, and enable mailing of the KR-net endorsed vendor/product lists out to members. KR-net html updater Update any/all kr-net web pages. KR-net Product Reviewer Posts a column on products voted by KR-netters to be "KR-net" approved. We can then work on volume purchases quarterly/monthly on KR-net approved stuff..... Wing attach fittings, Canopies, spruce kits... yadda yadda. I'm not sure exactly how this would work, but think we can just tell the vendors to expect orders to be bunched up. If there is enough interest, I can try to devote some time every couple of weeks to chat via telephone/internet so get this launched. P.S. We have $$$ left over from the ISP bill for 1999 so I'm thinking I should look at getting some KR-net decals made up for people who donate in 2000. Please don't send any more funds now, I'm still in the middle of my move and probably won't be fully settled back with my KR until March worst case... -- Regards Ross ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: [Fwd: Gathering] From: Ross Youngblood Date: Sat, 08 Jan 2000 11:28:32 +0000 X-Message-Number: 12 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------A6F1A28C83224CC9A65E4458 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Here is a proposal for next years Gathering. Recently I read an article about a couple from Kansas that had a great idea for thier (Dare I say it?) Lancair 320. One of the ways he dealt with the security issue was to install a remote keyless entry using the trunk latch system from a Luxury car. After the lid is lowered near the closed position it is mechanically snugged up tight. Many amercian manufactures have utilized this approach in their cars (Firebird, Cadillacs, Lincolns..etc.) There is a hidden release button if the power is lost and for emergencies. I've looking into this for our KR2S designs and there's no reason I can see that it can't be used. If anyone else has ideas about a design for canopy locking systems with airtight seals I'd be interested in hearing about them.
