In France one can't certify any experimental (or other) plane if the canopy could not be open from outside once latched. They (the inspectors from the National Civil Aviation Security Administration) consider that in case of emergency (after a hard landing or something else) the pilot could not be able to open the canopy. The solution that most people use is a Dragonfly canopy and build their own turtleback. The Dragonfly has a more squared off cross-section. The canopy is flat between the pilot's head and the passenger's head. > 5. Has anyone used any Rotax engines in KRs? > 5a. Has anyone been flying with more than eighty something HP? I bought mine from Arcraft Spruce. Both Wicks & AS refused to ship me other Expoxy's which were "Hazardous". T-88 is not, so there was no problem. I believe there is a place in Toronto which carries T-88 and I'm guessing but I think It's call Fiberglass Factory. I'm pretty much done the boat and doing my spars now. I used T-88 for all wood. I have one small complaint about it and that is I am not 100% happy with grain penitration because it is a little thick and sets up so fast. I've done the tests and the wood breaks and not the epoxy joint. I just wish the test break was not so shallow into the wood. I let the epoxy sit on the wood about 5 mins and then re-apply it before putting the pieces together. If I didn't do this the joints might be a bit too glue starved for my licking, especially "end grain". Lastly... I do not over tighten the clamps. Boy... I really ran off at the mouth on this one......... rick@hubka.com www.hubka.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: 2000 Gathering From: KR2616TJ@aol.com Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 17:37:15 EST X-Message-Number: 16 I have today verified the contract with Lake Barkley State Resort Park in far "western" Kentucky for the 2000 KR Gathering to be held the weekend of Friday Sept. 22nd. to Sunday Sept. 24th. At the present time the park has 69 accommodations still available (some people have jumped the gun and made reservations already, which was OK). The group rate on the rooms are $58.00 single and 68.00 double plus 6% tax. They have 1 log cabin and two cottages still available, which sleep six and are priced at $155.00. Three of us split one last year and had a big time. Most of the rooms overlook the lake and several have loft ceilings. All rooms not taken by July 22nd. get turned over to the public and will be taken up from their waiting list. If you wait until after July, you will have to find a room in Cadiz, KY. Phone number 1-800-325-1708 The lodge cafeteria is excellent and is located right next to the two sections of rooms with the dining area once again overlooking the lake. We will not have to drive to get to the banquet this year as a section of the convention center was available. Dinner will be served in the same manner as last year by buying a banquet ticket at the airport and presenting it to the cashier. I have made arrangements with the local paper and television station. The television station plans on being at the airport all day Saturday. I am talking with the local radio station about doing a live remote from the airport to get the local people out. I am also talking with Aircraft Spruce and Wicks about showing up in their display vans. Heck, you might just walk away with a wood kit. I'm working on having a couple more vendors show up, maybe a couple of surprises. Last year, a lot of people showed up on Thursday which made Friday a great day to just hang around the airport. If you plan on coming in on Thursday, be sure call early for your room as no rooms are reserved, but they do have them available at this time. I know a lot of people want to have forums on Friday. I'm not making any promises as I would like to keep Friday more laid back than Saturday. Just like last year, dinner will be served at the airport on Friday and lunch will be served on Saturday. I'm talking with the same people as last year, so don't miss it as it will have the same local "flavor" as last year. For those of you who did not attend last year, this place is absolutely incredible. The scenery is beautiful, you will have to watch out for the deer. I think I counted 17 on my walk from the cottage to breakfast one morning. On the grounds you have boat rental, nature trails, indoor pool, game room, tennis, golf, fishing...........an OH by the way............an airport. Once you get there, you'll see what we are talking about. For those of you flying commercial, Southwest (cheap) serves Nashville where you can rent a car and hit 24 west. Head towards Cadiz, KY then to the park. Guys, if you are wondering about this location, you can put a string from Lake Barkley to Orlando, swing it around and you encompass 31 states within easy flying distance in a KR. http://www.state.ky.us/agencies/parks/lakebark.htm Dana Overall 2000 Gathering host Richmond, KY mailto:kr2616tj@aol.com http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/hangar/7085/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: HELP From: "Edwin Blocher" Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 18:14:23 -0600 X-Message-Number: 17 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_001F_01BF5C5F.B033DA60 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable I've been working 2 days on fitting the tail post. Give it up Ed! All you can do at this point is glue it in as best you can. No amount of tweaking the fuselage is going to help the tailpost after the boat is built. Install it, and then later on use one of your spare spar strips (generated when you taper your main spars) to laminate onto the side of the tailpost that needs the material. Figure out where the center of your tail post is with a plumb bob, mark top width and bottom width, and belt sand to perfection. It's either this or you got lucky and it's perfectly vertical... Try making your tapered tail post into a sanding bar to perfect it's fit to the tail longerons. I applied a thin layer of carpet tape to the forward side of the tail post and then applied 150 grit sandpaper to that. I then inserted the newly created tailpost sander into the V grove where the tail post will be epoxied and proceeded to sand the longerons flush with the location where the tail post will ultimately reside. I probably did not explain this right and unless you are at or beyond this point, I probably make no sense at all just like my wife always tells me. I totaly agree with Mark here and "just get close and do it". I suspect I may be out a degree or 2 which is much easier to tweak later. Once the post was mounted firmly on a fixture UNDER the table, pulling the sides together was a snap. Fitting the longerons to the post for an accurate fit was time consuming and frustrating but worth the effort. Once fit was established, right angle fixtures were built to hold the sides vertical and the longerons straight. I screwed these to the table after I clamped the sides to the upside-down tail post. I could move the sides apart enough to apply the T88 and get everything lined up perfect. Once I got the bottom skinned and flipped the "boat" over, the tail post was mounted absolutely vertical. Hope this helps you. If my goal is to attend a KR Gathering, I'll do what it takes to get there. The info, inspiration and community provide an unsurpassed experience. I, too, would rather fly my KR (or even a spam can), but the airlines are reliable and affordable if you plan in advance. I've attended Oshkosh, Sun'N'Fun and Copperstate since starting my KR. I also attended the KR Gathering every other year, until I moved to Texas and now it's a three-peat! I also helped organize the EAA East Coast Fly-In Breakfast for too many years. Perhaps the money spent on these travels would better go for KR parts and materials, but I feel these vacations were well spent. If the Californians organize a regular KR Fly-In, I might get there too! Good luck.
