The >government removed the SA the GPS satellites. We now receive the same signal >as the military. I don't want to rain on the parade, but those of you (us) with older GPS receivers may not reap the full benefit of the improved GPS signal. My trusty Magellan Meridian (circa 1995) has had quite a time locking on (Yes, I was one of those guys wandering around in the back yard :-) with the new signal, even with a plethora of satellites in range to choose from. On the other hand, my friend who has a Lowrance Airmap 100 has not had any problems and the altitude computation (most inaccurate of all GPS info) is relatively stable - mine still jumps around just a wildly as before. I can't say the same about any other brand recievers - so your actual mileage may vary! ;-) In my experience, most older (consumer) GPS receivers only calculate two decimals of minute info. This can be expanded to three if you have a differential receiver. Two decimals (most older GPS's) gets you within 101 feet (ideal even with with SA turned off) which is about what you'd expect with SA turned on anyway. Three decimals gets you in the 6 foot ballpark - which is great, if you have them. In any case - older receiver or not, the error (dastardly SA gremlins) will be significantly reduced, but the accuracy will remain the same if your unit only displays two decimals of minute. SA or no SA, your GPS system will get you within visual range of your target (airport??). We're not building cruise missles here. I would also caution that this improved GPS signal is not licence to use it as your only source of navigational information. Anyway - looks like I need to upgrade my GPS. I've been looking at the Airmap for quite some time - it's a VERY impressive unit. Mark D. For those who may wonder, I am working aviation requirements for GPS. The spec value of the civil signal (C/A on L1) was 100 meters (95%). Actual value was in the 60-65 meter (95%) range with SA on. The numbers coming out with SA off are preliminary but are in the 10 meter (95%) area. Some folks are touting 5 meters or lower and some have suggested 20 meters or so. Regardless, you do NOT need a new receiver to take advantage of the improved accuracy in most cases. My Airmap 100 is already showing the results of SA off. I had planned on doing some "simulated" non-precision approaches in VFR conditions and with a safety pilot along before SA was turned off. I know it would have been fine. It is even better now. Of course I only use it as a "situational aid." If you are looking for a new receiver, be aware that there are plans to add new civil frequencies. C/A on L2 will start around 2003. The second signal will allow for correction of ionospheric errors which are typically the largest after SA. Some folks will say you cannot use L2 for aviation but in my opinion that is BS. There will also be an aviation signal on L5 starting a few years later. You may consider waiting for a receiver that has those capabilities or just get one now. Under emergency conditions, I would not hesitate to use the current receiver I have for a NPA. once you get to 10 meter or so accuracy, you are so far within the 220 meter NPA accuracy anyway that going down to 2-5 meters (with more signals) probably does not gain anything. I would also look at units like the Garmin 295. It is color and can display a map and HSI at the same time. Although a higher end unit at around $1350, it it very nice. Of course it is handheld and not IFR approved but any aviation grade handheld, especially with mapping capability, will dramatically improve your situational awareness. I believe IFR units must be panel mounted and adhere to TSO-C129. Other requirements exist if it is to be a primary means navigation system. As I have told non-pilots, if I cannot find an airport using GPS, I should not be flying. I had no idea they would do that since your handheld probably does not have RAIM/FDE to determine if there is a GPS signal fault. If you go to a minimum length mount, the amount of ballast weight will be reduced. Consider not having a starter. You can save 10 to 20 pounds if you are willing to hand prop. 2) Consider a fixed gear, You will get more ground clearance. 3) If you want to have the same margin to safety as the original, then your useful load will have to go down. Several years ago when I purchased mine they were about $25 cheaper then the local stores. It came with a 24 inch rail and an excellant carrying case. It won't cost to find out. If you purchase one without seeing it, make sure it reads down to .1 degree. I once saw one in a local store and wondered why it seemed so cheap. After checking it out I realized it only read in .2 degree scale. I'm sure that would be close enough but for a few bucks more.... I think anyone building a KR today ought to invest in an electronic level. You'd be surprised though how close you can get with a bubble level. I set my front center spar and built my wing center section with a 48 inch level and a 24 inch level I found in the trunk of a car I bought. When I measured it with the Smartlevel I was off only 1/10 of one degree. You really won't get it any closer than that with an electronic level. Larry Flesner P.S. It works great for setting control surface deflection. One person can set in the cockpit and read the level taped to the aileron or you can have someone less experianced reading the level for you while you make the adjustments. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 May 2000 14:15:59 -0600 To: krnet@mailinglists.org From: Ron Lee Subject: GPS Units Message-Id: <3.0.6.32.20000505141559.007b8640@pcisys.net> I just emailed Lowrance and asked them when they would go to lower resolutions than 0.1 mile and add VNAV capability. They said they had no plans to do so. Although I like my Lowrance Airmap 100, with the improved accuracy of GPS now (approx <10 meters horizontal), I believe that it is capable of being used for VNAV (at least VFR). Henece I would look for a unit that has VNAV and a "glideslope" capability to support VNAV. Just my opinion. If you want free tutorials on GPS, fly your KR to Meadow Lake in Colorado (00V) and give me a ride in exchange. :) Ron Lee ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 May 2000 18:14:13 -0700 From: Mike Mims CC: krnet Subject: eXplanes.com (its Friday isnt it?) If any of you are on the Dragonfly, Subaru, or VW mailing list feel free to invite them to drop in a blab too. Maybe if this thing takes off we can have people like William and Steve dropping by the Corvair and VW forums. That would be pretty cool eh? -- __________________ Micheal Mims Trying to get this thing done! http://www.fortunecity.com/marina/anchor/270/ http://explanes.com/ Aliso Viejo Ca ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 May 2000 07:23:49 -0500 To: CorvAIRCRAFT , KR-Net From: Mark Jones Subject: Web Page Message-ID: <39140ED5.7B5C6501@execpc.com> Good morning All, For those of you who have not been able to view William Wynne's web site due to being a Netscape user or were getting a black background and could not read any text, this problem has now been corrected. We have asked Rand Robinson if the MTOW could have been higher and the answer was basically no; 1050 lbs should be the real gross with limited g-forces (4,5 g if my memory works well). Regarding engine mount we have all bought it directly from Rand Robinson. CG is within the limits, but very close to the front. I have a prop extension and that does not help; to keep the tail on the ground I had to add 2 kg of lead over the tailweel mount. Having such a light tailweel caused me some serious problems landing on a wet field, few weeks ago, while stall characteristics were allways very good. I hope this few notes can be helpfull, and me too would like to hear about other builders experiences Camillo KR2S Italy ----- Original Message ----- From: Leonardo To: Ross Youngblood ; Cc: KRNET Sent: Thursday, May 04, 2000 10:31 PM Subject: Re: KR> O-200 > hello kr people > > After searching for a long time for a engine to my kr2s i,ve decided to > change the vw the was already installed in my beauty , to a continental > o-200 . the engine is in my garage and now comes the most dificult part . > engine mount, cg location , nose heavy , new cowl and lots of things. well > ,what i really need is help from you guys. > topics: > 1)- will i need to put weigth on the tail ? > 2) - what prop to use ,since i had a 54x52 on 75 hp and now 100 hp and no > more than 60" of clearence? 2 blades, 3 blades ? > 3)- with 75 lbs more will the plane be good only for one person?
