If you apply micro directly to the foam, you are not >going to be able to smooth/sand it without damaging the foam. Go ahead and >glass it and then apply the filler. >=================================================================== When using the micro/epoxy mix to seal the foam and allowing it to dry before glassing, the following are important: 1. The foam must be totally ready for the glass before sealing. 2. Use a good squeege (6"rubber from Wick's) to spread the slury and don't leave any ridges or ANYTHING that needs to be sanded. Seal the foam and remove the excess. 3. After it is cured, make one or two light passes with some 100 or so grit paper to remove the little ticks that tend to snag the glass. Use a piece of scrap glass and slide it accross the foam to see if there are any "snaggies". I did both wings and the tail surfaces this way and no problems whatever. 4. While my glass layup was still wet, I covered the entire layup with 1.25 oz. glass so I didn't have the large weave to fill. It worked fine. I also sealed the fuselage with this lightwieght glass. It is wider than the wing cord so I laid it root to tip. The trick to getting out all the wrinkles in the light glass is to pull gently all around the edge. Then use whatever resin you need to finish wetting out the lightweight stuff. It will pull 30 to 40% of the resin it needs from the underlay. For those of you that tend to do a resin rich layup, you may not need to add any resin at all. The biggest secret I found for large layups is using the rubber squeege (6" from Wick's). Once you learn the correct angle and pressure , it's very easy and fast to get just the right amount of resin in the glass. You want the glass saturated with no holes in the weave. If it's starting to take on a shine it's probably resin rich. Just my experiance. Your results may vary.......... I have a few questions for those who may have done the same. 1) The main gear is to be mounted on the back of the main spar using a right angle alu bracket. What angle (to the vertical, looking from the side) is required from the top of the spar to the axel. I figured between 5 and 10 degrees. I was hoping I could mount it strait on with no angle, but I fear that the gear will be too close to the aft limit of the CG range and cause problems when getting into the plane (sitting on it's a$$) 2) What material should I use as a wedge to give this angle, and if wood, what type and which way should the grain run? 3) What is the correct angle of incidence for the plane (top longeron) when standing on it's gear. Should it be slightly nose down, say 2 degrees, or level? 4) The main gear is spring steel 10 mm thick and 3 inches at the top tapering to 2 inches at the bottom. The gear still needs to be temperred after the axel holes have been drilled. What is the correct spec for this? 5) Does anybody know where I can get a good drawing showing all details of a suitable nose gear assembly, similar to the Diehl gear set up? 6) Failing all this, where can I get a good reference document for designing and installing a tri-gear system? Thanks in advance for any constructive advice. If I'm lucky I'll get a picture of it tomorrow for the upcoming issue of Contact! magazine. He ditched the Ivo prop that he'd been trying to make work, and bought a Sterba that he really likes. The Ivo had a nasty vibration, and no matter where he pitched it, he couldn't get a decent combination of speed and climb, especially speed. Since Ivo has a 30 day money back guarantee, he took him on it and got the Sterba. He's now doing 2500 rpm both static and climb, and 2900 cruise, with a 1500 ft/min climb @ 100 knots. With his roughly 100 horse C-85 he's now topping out at about 195 mph with full fuel. Jeff Duval, who's 100 pounds lighter, was doing 200 mph (true) with a little less fuel shortly thereafter. Troy says he needs to get the thing painted, but is enjoying flying it too much to take it down for a paint job. He's still happy with the improved speed and stability of his plane, whether due to new airfoil, or to the better wing/tail geometry. He has July 26th blocked off on his calendar for the forum at Oshkosh. Now if Troy can go 200 mph on 100 hp, I wonder what 135 hp is gonna do for me and Mims? For those of you who were offended at my "April's Fool" story about the KR fire, you'll be happy to know that I was paid back in full the other night. We had been at a baseball tournament that our 7 year old son was playing in. My first clue was when I saw water flowing out under the garage door upon arrival back home. As the door opened, I could see that it was RAINING in the basement, right on top of the KR! It turned out that one of the supply lines had blown off of the sink in the upstairs bathroom (third floor, if you count the basement), and the water was doing that "back to ground zero" thing. The water's still emptying out of the walls into the basement, but fortunately only the aft deck of N56ML got a "christening". The only real damage was the loss of 8 sets of airfoil templates. I think the house will recover eventually. Other than that, I'm closing out the ends of the ailerons and flaps on wing number two. I should be finishing them up soon, right after I decide what to do about wing tips...
