The "slurry" mix ,when applied , should not run down the surface. The only purpose for the slurry is to seal the foam so it doesn't soak up a lot of resin (which is much heavier) when you lay up the glass. I seemed to get the best results when I mixed the micro a bit thicker than honey but not as firm as peanut butter. Also, if you are using the stir sticks that are rounded on both ends, cut one end flat and they will work much better. I hope this helps. Just in case this one isn't dead...If you really want to use water for leak tests, after draining all out that will, pour in a bottle of alcohol. That will absorb the retained water. Slosh and drain the alcohol, then pour in a quantity of ethyl ether which will pick up the retained alcohol. After draining this, any liquid will quickly evaporate, leaving a clean, dry tank. Any possible damage will be negligible because of the short contact time. Water is not soluble in ether, which is why the alcohol step. What little water is in the alcohol will get picked up by the ether as long as the percentage isn't too high. No worries about acetone, diesel, or gasoline.
