I removed the paint and primer from the cowling and have been repairing fastener holes and other spots that needed glass. I have cracks in the gel coating of the top cowl and need some suggestions for repair. If I just prime and paint, the cracks will work into the paint work. I would appreciate any comments. Only a few details remain and I can finish the plane and get back in the air after 2.5 years. I also have to reclock the mag drive so that when properly timed, the mag will fit on the Diehl case in such a way that I will be able to use both of the mag lock down clamps. If anyone has experience with any of these problems I'd like to here form you. Note: that the Posa is not suppose to be subject to carb icing. When ever I fly in conditions that may need carb heat, I disconnect the ram air, block off the air intake and use lower cowling heat during the flight. For the Sonerai pilot/builder, why don't you rotate your Posa 180 degree so that it is at the bottom of your cowling and draw in air from the top through a carb heat box. Well, just a thought. Message-ID: <009901bfe246$34cf4450$a5f780ce@300emachine> AirGapHeads, What a day this has been! Last night Troy called, concerned that he just wasn't getting the climb performance that he thought he should be gettting on takeoff with the new airfoil. Despite having a C-85 and new Sterba prop (which does 2500 rpm static, 3100 wide open), he said it just didn't climb out as good as he thought it could. He was only getting 500 fpm at low speeds and high angles of incidence, and was convinced that the aileron gap was the culprit. He flew down to Jim Hill's hangar this morning and I brought out some gap seal material that Oscar sent me a few months ago. In twenty minutes, Troy had them installed and was ready to test! I wish I could do stuff like that. I have to scratch my head for days and wonder "but what if" too much. He just slaps them on and tries them! He could put 'em on, test 'em, and rip 'em off before I could even bring myself to TRY them! See more details of the installation and his plane at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/troy/troy3.html , but the bottom line is, they are a major improvement in low speed climb....like almost double! Troy came by the house too, and checked out the project. He really likes the flap/aileron setup, as well as the rest of the plane. He thinks I'm close to 90% done, which is pretty good news! I think maybe 80. We'll see. He also drove the Scirocco (somebody had to do it!), and "needs" one himself now. Although my collarbone has pretty much quit throbbing now, when faced with the opportunity to ride in his plane (one foot on the seat, one on the ground), I had to say "I don't think I can do it". You KNOW THAT hurts. But this sick-leave business could be habit forming. I sure am getting a lot done. Take my side view of the Corvair, as mounted in my KR. Is this cool or what? (http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/corvair_kr2.jpg). I've also finally updated the CAD drawing at the top of http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/kmarkl.html to reflect it as well. I did a lot of thinking (and measuring) about the cowling today, and have a much better idea of what I need to do there. I'm pretty sure that the diminutive Corvair dimensions (with carb on top) are going to get me a pretty streamlined cowling. Were it not for my lower thrust line, the Revmaster cowling would fit, I'm sure. My carb will be a two barrel side draft 40DCOE Weber mounted atop the engine (the orange thing) with a very simple intake leading to each bank. This part's going to be a piece of cake. Going on vacation this weekend. This sick leave is killin' me...
