My company is transferring me out of the country for around five or so. I was going to take my 2S with me but after looking at the feasibility of it, I have decided against that. I also do not want to leave my plane sit in the hanger untouched for five years. My project is a tricycle setup, nearly complete (only one wing needs completed). We has everything to complete it right down to the Cleveland hydraulic brakes. This is not a scab kit it has excellent craftsmanship and all the specifications have been adhered to (no surprises). I have all building logs, books, and blueprints with serial numbers for this airplane. If you would like some up close detailed pictures of the craftsmanship please let me know I can get them to you (digitally) pretty quick. I have a Great Corvair engine that goes with it and it has the right number acording to William Wynes book for conversion. I also have a trailer that I may consider letting go (double axle with surge brakes, brand new) for an airplane 16’ long deck 20’ long trailer 10,000 capacity (over the axles) (the trailer only weights 397lbs !! I am leaving on Oct. 1st. If I do not sell it by the time of the gathering I may tow to Kentucky for the gathering. If I do sell it, I would be happy to turn my room reservations over to one of my fellow Krnet builders (I think they are booked up, but not sure?) I know we are not supposed to post things for sale other than on a Friday, but I have a little bit of a time schedule to adhere to. My Apologizes. I just got back from a fly-in 310 miles away. I set the old, short, stock KR2 in slow cruise (115mph) just to test it for a few minutes and took my hands off. I had to touch the stick at least once or twice a minute to correct for bumps. When you do move the stick you move it slightly. I don't consider this to be overly sensitive. I can't do the hands off test at higher speeds *in my plane* because it will wander (roll) slightly more than I can correct for just by leaning around the cockpit. Surf the various KR web sites and gather ideas. Bigger and/or adjustable tail surfaces are a neat idea. Wider and longer are good ideas too. Keep the CG in the front part of the range and it should be okay pitch wise. Get tail heavy and it might be another story. The 2-S (stretch) is designed to be more stable than the shorter, old style KR2, so build a 2-S :-). If a prop reduction was used on a VW to lower the max prop rpm to say 2600, would the increased weight of the psru not be offset with the increased torque, pitch and diameter ? Unless you do something magic with the prop clearance, you won't be able to get much bigger diameter than what we're flying now, so a slower RPM won't do much for you. GPASC does have some interesting redrives though. I'm convinced that the direct flywheel drive is the way to go with a VW. A little bruised, but otherwise very well. I am very sad and somewhat embarrassed for letting the plane come down like I did. As Kip said I was down visiting him again the other day and got confidence in my handling of a KR-2 at his hand. Can't thank him enough for the great coaching he gave me. It's not that I am not a pilot just recognized that the plane is more horse than what I had experience with in the past. This little bird C-GROK flew absolutely like a dream. No tendency to be pitchy or difficult in the least; and very fast and very responsive. I was hollering with joy during most of the flight it was so exciting and I was so satisfied with the way it flew. Then I began to notice a vibration building up. I was orbiting a local field with a paved landing strip, when this began. I turned on final and was at about 1500 ft. maybe about five miles back, when the engine began to run rough. I tried to adjust the mixture, and throttle settings, and look for a place to set down if I didn't make it to the field. I called to the local tower to report that I was having some difficulty, they came back with the question was I going to make the field ? I replied "I'd sure try my best". Of course I knew that I had to keep the airspeed up and fly the airplane. Everything was coming unravelled but my training. I realized I wasn't going to make the field, so I selected a blueberry heath to the left of my path, rather than the big woods directly ahead. As the plane continued to sink I found two trees about 20 ft tall standing together. I put the plane between them, at about 60 MPH indicated, at maybe 8 ft elevation. I had shut off all the systems during the last seconds of the decent and after the plane came to rest, I climbed out from under it. I was still fastened in and still had my helmet on. I scrambled out and ran off a few yards to see what would happen. The plane flew very well indeed, and the type is very tough since the fuselage appears to be in good shape, no breakup of the pilot compartment at all. What happened is still unknown to me, there was fuel, and the temperature of the coolant was better that it had ever been. The engine prop system using a Saturn engine was spectacular. At 1\3 or the available power I was cruising at 115 MPH indicated. Lessons I learned; wear a helmet during the test flights. When the plane came to rest for the final thump, with shoulder straps on, my head still flew forward enough to smash the visor of the helmet. I still have a bit of a tender spot on the front top of my head. No helmet could have been death. On test flights, climb urgently, not enough to over heat of course but get air under you, had I been at 2000 ft AGL I would not be writing this, I'd still be flying my plane. Never allow the plane to get into a low speed situation, without power. Remember a stall/spin at low altitude would be fatal. How you all could help me with my grief over racking up my airplane. I need a pair of wings. Some of you fellows have built new style airfoils, what about selling me the old wings ? Frankly tomorrow I will salvage the aircraft and if it can be rebuild I will do it. But wings would be a great help. Thanks for all the good thoughts and best wishes, especially Kip Lounsbury. And yes although the plane type is a great one, the Good Lord was definitely looking after me that day, hope you will all enlist That support too. After taking measurements (with spacers in place), it appears the new 5 point sticks out about an inch further than my old original 4 point mount. I haven't installed the cowling yet, but just by putting it in place, it looks as though the cowling will taper in and hit the ends of the valve covers at the front of the engine on both sides. Pushing the engine back in toward the firewall a little will ofcourse give me a little more room. Will this have an adverse effect on the weight and balance? The safe answer to this question is you will have no idea if you need them until you can do a weight an balance. Moving the engine forward (or aft) a bit is a lot better then adding dead weight. I did not build my motor mount until I could weigh the empty airframe and then calculate the distance the engine needed to be from the firewall to get everything just right. ===== ........| .......-^- ....-/_____\- ...(O\__o__/O) ...[#]oxxxo[#] -----Y2K Bug--- Yes I drive one! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I am in the process of being scheduled for my inspection. I have my registration, weight & balance, builders log and the application for the airworthiness certificate. What have others come up with for the pilot's operating handbook (POH). I understand that this is needed but I'm not sure what to put together for a standard plans built KR2. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike Geoghegan Moretown Vermont Humidors@sover.net ------------------------------ End of krnet Digest ***********************************
