VNE is the maximum allowable airspeed (never exceed). The airframe will tend to vibrate as the speed increases. Stiffness and strength of the various components determine how likely they are to flutter and the frequency of vibration of that flutter. The frequency of vibration caused by the airflow increases as the speed is increased. At some point, the airflow induced vibration will equal a resonance frequency of vibration of the structure. At this point, the airplane will fail. If you have seen photos of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge fail, then you know the result. In this famous case, a suspension bridge oscillated itself to failure just due to airflow induced vibration that was equal to the natural frequency of vibration of the bridge. The individual components such as the wing, aileron, rudder, stabilizer, etc have different resonance frequencies. In the design of certified aircraft, these can be calculated with a fair degree of accuracy, then measured with the proper test equipment. Next the airplane can be flown at ever-increasing speeds to verify proper operation. VNE is set as a percentage (80 to 95%) of the maximum speed that the test aircraft was safely able to reach. In a homebuilt, VNE is your business and either established by the designer, or your own test flight program. The normal operating speed, VNO, is based on the structural limitations of the aircraft. In normal circumstances, you must be able to make a normal control input and not cause the structure to fail. A similar concept is the maneuvering speed. This is the maximum speed that you can fly at and not fail the aircraft with a full control surface deflection. Then one of my brilliant co-workers told me that you could shut off the boot-up or shutdown scans in the "preferences" section and only run them when you wanted to do a scan. That was what I finally setup and it wasn't too bad. However running a virus check took FOREVER when I used to go and run one periodcly. I have virus software but since my last CPU upgrade I haven't installed it. Since I don't use Outlook, and don't run .exe files that I don't know for sure who sent them, I'm petty virus immune. I only caught one a few years back when I was going back to college, and one of my floppys picked up a Word macro virus. Those are really annoying, so I would recommend having a floppy and download/email checking set to "on" for the virus checking. Hope this was helpful to folks. -- Regards Ross dene collett wrote: > Sorry guys, it seems that my system was infected with the kak worm from a > week ago.
