These may just be rumors and this is definitely not a suggestion. Once things are on file with government, they are forever on file. The reason why it is intentionally difficult to get a ticket after a stroke or MI is the greatly increased risk of sudden death or seizures (after the stroke) in the period immediately afterward. You may not care, but your passenger and the people 5000' below may. Most physicians would probably release you for regular activities (depending on the amount of damage you had) within a few weeks, but most FARs are written for the worst-case scenario, not the probable one. The stall that R/R sets would only apply if they were manufacturing airplanes. That's why all Cessna, Piper,Mooney, ect are " COOKIE CUTTER AIRPLANES." They have to meet the Type Certificert issued by the FED. That's the difference between experimental and certified. Fox RN,BSN You do not need a medical of any sort for ultralights. I think (but may be wrong) that you self-certify your health to fly sailplanes and motor gliders. No medical required. The proposed recreational pilot's license will require that you hold either a valid Class III medical or a valid driver's license. The proposal may not make it into law. >> Sailplanes ARE SELF CERTIFIED for the medical (I have my commercial in both power and sailplanes). Just don't go blabbing around that you have health problems, or the FED could find a way to ground you from only the sailplane. The ultralights have NO health restriction. The FED cannot touch you. And don't let then tell you they can, 'cause they can't. Mike, not to put you off, but I feel the best route for you to take would be to build one of the ultralights by Fisher or Preceptor. These are about as close to a certified aircraft as you can get. There are a couple of others that get close, but these two are first class. If you want to get into it farther, e-mail me off net, and we'll go into it more. Have you ever lost consciousness due to an asthma attack? I only have 2-3 bouts a year (triggered mostly by smog/pollution) and I have been off Ventolin and Serevent (sp?) for 5+ years. I have only been hospitalized once in the 11 years that I have had asthma - I had an attack right after I competed in a triathlon and I lost consciousness for a few minutes. Other than that my asthma isn't a problem. If it isn't too personal, would you mind sharing the specific reason(s) your doctor gave you for refusing your medical due to your asthma? Thanks. You will want to consult a doctor who is certified by the FAA to be a ME. Even then, they emphasize different things. My first one in AZ was older, also a lawyer, and he was very thorough and yet efficient. No problem. My second, in TX, was younger, a cardiac specialist, and he went nuts trying to get me to read the eye chart without my glasses. I correct to 20-20 with glasses, but I know better than to try to fly, ride my motorcycle, or drive without them. I passed, but I won't be going back to him. Pilots (especially instructors) in your area should be able to tell you who is reasonable and who is going to drive you nuts. Just like at work, right? A big problem with pilot-licensing in the USA is that it assumes everyone will progress from private to ATP, and THESE DAYS there's no reason for that except CYA by hard-pressed government agencies. The FAA and NTSB catch hell every time Dateline, 20-20 or 60 Minutes decides to increase their ratings by "investigating" some pilot's misfortune. And their (FAA, NTSB)easiest response is to tighten up requirements and enforcement. That's why your participation in EAA AND AOPA is paramount. These are pilot organizations to keep general aviation (GA) from being thrown out with the trash. Sorry about the SOAP-BOX, just wanted to offer you a little encouragement... Hang in there buddy. Of course those that need to read this most will figure it's not meant for them... 1) If you don't have anything subtantial to say, please don't post anything. This is a KR list, and as such, really needs to stay focused on KRs, or at least airplanes. With almost 600 people on the list, if we all decided to say something every day we'd have a real problem. Ask yourself "do 600 people really need to see this, or are 600 people going to be annoyed by this?" Personally, my time is pretty precious to me, and I hate to waste it reading inane email. And is it something that you could find somewhere else? 2) Carefully consider whether or not you need to reply to a post. Saying "me too", or "I don't know" doesn't contribute to the thread, it just makes the list more bothersome. If you don't know what your talking about, maybe you should be listening, rather than talking. There are FEW people who know everything about everything. Try to stick to things you KNOW about, and let others answer the rest. Try to write "keeper" posts if you're the expert on something. Cover the whole issue, answer all possible questions, address both sides of an issue, and make it a post that others will want to save or print out. Those are the gems that we all search for on KRNet. 3) Keep personal stuff offline. Finding that some other KRNetter is from your neck of the woods isn't a good enough reason to bother us all with your efforts to strike up an acquantance. Email him direct, rather than to the list. 4) Put your email address in your signature to make emailing others "offnet" easier. If we all had our addresses at the bottom of our posts, it would be far easier to "email direct". If it's blue just click on it, if it's not, cut it and paste it into the "To" box. 5) When replying to a post, delete everything but a few key sentences from the previous post. It's really ridiculous to have to search thru 3 or 4 pages of stuff to find down at the bottom where some clown wrote "me too". Conversely, at least put SOMETHING in the post to remind us what you're replying to. A post like "yeah, that's how I did mine and it works great" doesn't mean a thing if you don't know what the guy's talking about. 6) Don't send enclosed files directly to the list. Either post it to a web site or get someone else to post it so others can see if they want, but don't have to if they don't. Also, enclosures are famous for carrying viruses, which we could all do without. I usually delete messages with enclosures immediately, unless I'm expecting something from that person. I don't have two days to rebuild my computer "for fun". 7) If you have something you want to share, specify that you want replies to go offline. It's nice to say "hey, I've got the holy grail on thingamajigs, anybody want it?", but when 15 people reply online that they want it it gets kinda painful wading thru all of those posts for nothing. A gentle reminder to "reply offline" and furnishing your email address will be a big help. 8) Do not advertise to this list. It's OK to let folks know there's a new service or a new business, but point them to web site. We don't need a bunch of advertising here. Personal testimonials as to a product's usefullness are welcome anytime, as long as it's not YOUR product. 9) Try not to take things personally. We're all here to help each other. There are usually several ways to take comments. Always try to pick the "nicest" interpretation, rather than trying to read animousity into a post. It's a lot easier to just ignore a snide comment and let it slide. Try to avoid "having the last word". 10) It's OK to interject some personality into emails, just make a contribution while you're at it. I like to let other KRNetters know who I am and what my interests are, but I try to tack that sort of stuff to the bottom of a post in which I've made some sort of contribution to the cause. 11) Those who violate these suggestions may find themselves wondering why they don't get KRNet mail anymore... I'll second that comment (or third it, since Mark Jones also chimed in on it). The instrument is very accurate. However... there is a place for everything, and the water level has a place. Namely, when there isn't enough material or surface or available space to allow you to lay your smart level or SmartTool in or on something, you can usually still sneak the end of a water level tube up in there. Or, if you want to compare the level of two points on a long, curved, smooth finished surface, or... well, you get the idea. Me, I have access to all kinds of electronic gadgets that our survey crew uses. I can set wing dihedral from across the street ;o) I guess since I already have the floor, I'll throw out my 2 cents' worth on the medical-related issue of medical self-certifying. My comment would be, "be honest with yourself". It's one thing to take a recreational hop around the countryside from your local strip, and another to go mix it up with traffic in a control area or near populated areas. It doesn't do anybody any good when the accident report reads, "the pilot had no current medical". So, are you going to just crumple some spruce and fiberglass out in the woods if you have a medical problem while in flight, or are you going to spoil somebody else's perfectly good day when you dump it in their living room? The regulator types out there seem to be looking for excuses to throw more "safety" regs our way, and all it takes is for somebody to plow a homebuilt into a picnic somewhere to get them all up in arms. It's happened to the seaplane folks, when somebody ran a seaplane through a canoe. They are getting clamped down on as far as which "public waters" are not open to seaplane operations anymore. I discovered that KR's with retracts are susceptible to high levels of CO even if they don't have heaters. On my trip back from Oshkosh I was almost overcome by CO and it took some time to figure out where it was coming in from, since I don't have a heater. I eventually discovered that the slipstream even over well faired-in retract gear will pull a lot of air out from the cockpit through the holes in front of the main spar where the retract mechanism extends into the wing. This makes the cockpit a very low pressure area while in flight ( By the way FORGET cockpit static source for your instruments). Air rushes into the cockpit from any available source, and In my case it was coming in from the tailcone. The holes in the tail fairing at the junction of the rudder and the elevator were allowing the engine exhaust carried by the propwash from the lower left of my cowling to enter the tailcone and be drawn into the cockpit through the fresh air vents I had installed in the bulkhead behind my head. The result was MAJOR HEADACHE for the last several hundred miles back to Southern CA. It seems this situation is most pronounced at my cruise speed and I have never really found a good solution for this problem, so for now I am very careful about leaving the fresh air vents closed on long trips and I frequently check my CO monitor. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Dec 2000 08:23:04 -0800 To: From: "Wayne Rodier" Subject: KR> questions from a Canadian Message-ID: <001801c05e0e$9a4155a0$24dd1d8e@wrodier> ------=_NextPart_000_0015_01C05DCB.6CC0E8E0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hello everyone. I've now retired, have almost finished building a warm = shop to work in, and am about to resume my project.=20 I have a couple of questions that I hope someone can help me with. 1. I have heard that the fixed = gear configuration works well with little, or no, speed penalty. Has = anyone converted from retractable to fixed? How involved a conversion = is it? Are there alternatives to Dan Diehl's kit? 2. I used Safety-poxy for the fiberglass work. Are there alternative = systems that are preferable? 3. What are people using to fill minor imperfections in the glass, and = to fill in the weave of the glass. I have some Feather-Fill that I was = originally going to use; is that the product of choice now, or are there = other products that work better?=20 I will be thankful for any advice. Here's = what I did, I hope it is of help to someone else. Fitting the cross pcs became easier when I realised that it was easier = to slide the pc up the coresponding vertical pc than it was to slide it = in from front or back, this way the compound bevel could be maintained, = and I quickly came to eyeball how much more material had to be sanded = off to get the cross pc to fit. =20 When it came time to glue the cross pieces in place, I had no illusions = about using clamps to hold anything in place, not with the oil, er, I = mean epoxy on. What I did was wrap masking tape around the ends of the = cross pcs to hold popsicle sticks in place on the top surface. The = popsicle sticks hung out over the ends of the cross pcs about 1/16", = just enough to catch the longeron. With the all the glue surfaces = pre-glued with raw epoxy, it was an easy task to apply the thickened = epoxy, slightly pull the sides apart, and just drop the cross pcs in = place, align them, and leave them, and they didn't fall away. Then it came time to fit the gusset blocks. This was NOT a fun job! = Trying to fit a compound bevel in little pc of 5/8" material was NOT = fun! So I cheated... Here's what I did; I cut some 7/8" x 5/8" material from some clear white = pine that I had. Using the 7/8" measure vertically I was able to make a = simple bevel cut to produce the gusset block. The extra material stood = proud 1/8" above the longerons on the outside, and 1/8" below the cross = pcs on the inside of the fuse. (more complicated to explain than to it = is to imagine). Removing the extra material standing proud on the = bottom of the fuse was part of the belt sanding process prior to = attaching the bottom skin. Removing the extra material standing proud = on the inside of the fuse was easy to do using a sharp, wide chisel and = CAREFULLY removing a bit of material at a cut. =20 To hold the gusset blocks in place, I used 9/16" long staples in a hand = stapler, held the stapler vertical against the block and longeron with = the 'shooting surface' facing me (on the outside of the fuse of = course),and pushed the block in place. The stapler was placed so that = one tine entered the longeron and one entered the block. I used two = staples per block. Very quick and easy. Believe me, using the extra wide material saved a LOT of time, = frustration, and material considering how much it took of all three of = these components to do just two compound bevelled gusset blocks. I hope this helps someone else along the way.
