But the wheels and brakes that are used on the fixed gear are the very ones used on the redesigned retract as a matter of fact, Clevelands, Matco's etc. are usable. John, I thought I was smarter than the plans on this and managed to live long enough to regret it (about a week). Placement of those verticals determines where your horizontal stabilizer/elevator has to go. Well really, it's the tailpost. So if they are a little too close to your tailpost your bellcrank now hits the tailpost, which is convenient if it's located just right, so as to act as a physical "stop", but a real pain if the two are too close together and you have to hog something out somewhere. I ended up abandoning my N verticals that I glued in, and made a new set parallel to them. That makes it hard to put the plywood spar retention bulkhead in, among other things, and there's another ounce or two. And you can't measure that 11 degree angle (or whatever yours is GOING to be) and bevel the sides of those members for maximum surface area against the plywood spar brace. There are lots of things that can't be determined until you have your vertical spar sitting on top of the longerons and you're ready to mount it. As for proper gluing of the fuselage exterior plywood to the verticals (which probably won't be vertical either, if you glue them in early) just run 3 or four number 4 wood screws thru the 3/32" plywood and into the verticals. The small diameter won't split them or I buy those phillips pan headed ones that Wicks sells in various lengths for little jobs like this. Screwing them in first allows you to do fit checks and ensure that both front and rear surfaces are parallel to each other. But make sure you wax the screws if you're using T-88, or you might not ever get them out! Of course if you do enough planning I'm sure you can pull it off, but unless you've built one before, my guess is you won't think of EVERYTHING involved until about a week too late... I was able to make my table 27 feet long which allows me to have the fuselage on the table and still have an 8' area for doing other things. I'd stay away from the particle board. The advantage to using plywood is that you can screw jigs/templates into it without tearout. The particle board will also swell and warp with humidity changes, or if you spill something on it. I set mine 32" high (I'm 5'7") so I'm not stretching to reach all the time. A favorite wood glue of mine is Structan by Excel. It's a polyurethane that comes in a tube, so no mixing. I don't know if the Australian authorities would accept this though. For gluing the foam you can use 5min epoxy, regular epoxy or some kinds of liquid foam. I'm also considering a non-vw engine but I plan to extend the engine mount, not the fuselage, to get the CG I want.
