Is this somthing particular to the Diehl skins? I have heard of epoxying the bolts in place but even that makes future repairs a problem. I don't see people glassing wing attach fittings on arcodusters and haven't seen this on any KR's (with the exception of my fuel tank in the wings which although doesn't glass the wing attach fitting, it makes them difficult to get to.) -- Ross Ralph H Snyder wrote: > Netters > Someone said the hinge mounting spars have to be glassed to keep them > from coming loose where they are epoxied into the skins. P Vasseur" CC: krnet@mailinglists.org Subject: Re: KR> Build time? Message-Id: <200101020507.WAA14722@spool1.cadvision.com> Here's a quesstimate 1. If you build the kit exactly to the plans figure on 1000 hours. As a first time builder (even with experienced help) you spend a lot of time thinking things thru which slows you down for the first 200 hours or so. They build faster if you work at them lots, if you're a weekend builder you waste a bit of time getting back to where you left off. They also build faster if you have another KR2 you can look at as you build. Figure on 2 years unless you're retired. 2. Using the fastbuild options can bump the kit price pretty quickly, although it will cut build time to maybe 600 hours. Shipping and GST add to the cost. Figure on anything shipped by truck to be $300 more than what you paid for it. 3. Engine can be anywhere from $6000 CAN for a 2180VW up to $18K CAN for the Rotax 912S. IFR adds weight so you won't want to go smaller. Use $10K for a budget figure. 4. IFR will add a lot of weight which will cut cruise. 160mph is a good ballpark. Inflight adjustable props may help this a bit. On top of the radios/gyros you'll need vacuum pump plus the other engine accessories that add weight. If you go this route you'll want to do most of your flying solo, you'll be over gross with a passenger. Other IFR planes I've seen in past newsletters were all over 650 lbs if my memory serves me correctly, some were over 700. The KR is light so many have said it's not a nice stable IFR platform. I'm sure others will disagree, and I would hope they respond to counter my opinion. (I like to hear other viewpoints, especially when they have firsthand experience). 5. For homebuilt IFR in canada you'll need to find an AME who will signoff the entire IFR installation, and you'll have to find an avionics shop for some of the installation. This is on top of the chapter 549 homebuilt inspections. I'd try and find someone before I started, some may not want to be involved because it's a homebuilt, others will get real excited about it. You may have to hunt around. You didn't say if you were doing this because you wanted a really fast airplane, wanted an IFR airplane, liked the idea of building an airplane or needed a cheap airplane. If the building part isn't what you're excited about and speed is not of the essence a C172 might end up being cheaper to aquire and end up less frustrating. If you think the building would be OK and speed was a key factor the KR is probably the way to go. One option to consider is to build your KR2S with a basic VFR panel, even use cheap non TSO instruments, and fly it for 50-100 hours. If it feels stable and you like how it handles with two people in it then you can spend the extra 10-20K CAN and upgrade everything to IFR then. The KR will be a cheaper alternative than a Lancair or RV or a Velocity. If you sold the KR though you might have a hard time recouping the cost of the IFR which would probably double the cost of the aircraft. And if this isn't important to you (you can always pull the expensive panel for your next airplane) then ignore the resale issue. Hope this was more helpful than confusing. See if you can find someone to give you a ride in one, even if you have to fly somewhere to do it. graham Edwards wrote: >Hi, I'm new to the homebuild side of aviation.
