New here but trying to not ask dumb questions. A certain (unnamed) member has already dealt with most of those...he knows who he is. Anyway, when the ceramic vs. hi-temp paint question came up, I did a search and found this on one website: "It has proven to be very common for almost any V8 engine to show approximately a 10 H.P. gain when only the pistons are coated. Partially coated engines have shown 20 to 25 H.P. increases." A paragraph later, I found this: "It should be noted that every application will be different and no two engines respond exactly alike." Uh-huh. So, my question: Does anyone actually KNOW if ceramic will lead to appreciable hp increase? I don't intend to go for "Best-looking plane" at any fly-ins, so if they're all the same I'll go with zinc or BBQ...but if I get more ponies, it's worth looking at. Thanks in advance. Really appreciate KRNet. It's amazin' how much I can learn by keeping my mouth shut and my eyes/ears open. Chuck __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! There are 4 of us here in Calgary Alberta Canada putting Corvair engines into our KR-2S. We paid anywhere from Free to $300.00 for the engines which will now require a few thousand in new parts to rebuild and get air worthy. How can you go wrong. 100+ HP, 6 cylinder air cooled, cheap, lots of parts available, fits a 2S, blah blah blah... Mark Langford from this group has a lot of information on his corvair site for using a Corvair Engine in a KR-2S. Mark is building up to 140hp on his engine. I am going to go for a more conservative 110HP (maybe??!!. ha ha) . Here is his link to his corvair section. I have not the space nor the time to do this project. The plane has an 1835 cc VW engine in it with 8 hours SMOH. The engine was checked and determined to be OK by an A&P. The wood prop was damaged and no longer useable. The plane has all VFR instruments except a radio. It has a clip for a handheld on the dash. The estimates are that it would take $2000.00 to get her back in the air. What happened is the landing gear collapsed on landing and there is some front end damage, but it is very fixable. It is on a trailer in my garage in Minneapolis, MN ready to go. The trailer= is completely new, and yours with the deal. Make me an offer and its yours.= Email me or call me on the 800 number at my office. Naturally, this KR2 being a taildragger, my propeller did not survive (Sight!). Questions: * Does anybody have a suitable explanation? * What should I do to prevent that in the future? >> I hope this makes sense since I'm watching Independence Day while composing this. It has great flying in it. First thing, if the throttle was closed as you said you could not get a high rpm. No air, no run. Little air, little run. Lots of air, lots of run. If over primed, too rich to run. Under primed, too lean. Second item. If you turn the prop backwards you will clear out the mixture you have put into the intake manifold. That's why you open the throttle and turn the prop backwards when the engine is flooded. Third item. When starting an airplane by hand, by your self, chock the wheels, put the seat belt around the control stick to hold full up elevator, and crack the throttle open to what would give you about 1200 to 1300 rpm. That's how to set up for hand starting by your self. THIS APPLIES TO VWs ONLY. The throttle would not be opened as far for a larger engine. When I start my "2" by hand, I pull the prop thru 4 times in summer, 8 in winter with the choke closed and throttle open about 1/8 of the way. Open the choke, crack the throttle, turn the switch on, and she normally fires on the first pull. My rpm will be at 1300 to 1350. Calmly reach inside the cockpit and reduce the throttle to a smooth idle. Take the chocks out, and climb in. That's it. If your rpm went high, there is no way the throttle was closed. Or you have one "H" of a manifold leak. Remember, rpm can only be changed with opening the throttle and allowing more air and fuel in. I hope this sheds some light on your problem. Besides, I have to get back to the movie. The best part is coming. If you want to discuss this farther, let me know and I'll leave the VCR off. WE can do it on the net. I'll do what I can... I have a CD & CDRW on the same machine. After thinking about it some more, I came to the conclusion that I should have sent it to the entire KRNet. I know the difference between "Reply" and "Reply All", so that wasn't the case here. Peter's note indicated that he wanted to "compare notes", so naturally I sent "my notes" only to him for comparison. Addendum to Peter's reply: Lessons I learned from my aluminum gear experience: I am not an engineer - but I designed my own gear in CAD and had 2 engineers test my design. I am not a machinist - but I had access to machines for cutting and bending my gear. I am not a metallurgist - so I took my work to a local shop that knows what they are doing. I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Al I am! ;-) Ok ... now for the real lessons. 1) If you aren't an engineer or do not have knowledge about Finite Element Analysis, make sure you have access to someone who does. Your design must be stress-tested under certain conditions. This is not a component of the KR that you can just scribble on a piece of paper and say "that looks about right" and put on your KR. This is called SWAG engineering : "Scientific Wild-Ass Guess"! ;-) 2) If you aren't a machinist or do not have the tools, it would be advisable to take your work to a machine shop and have someone who is qualified and experienced do the work for you. 3) Make sure that the grain of the aluminum runs along the length of the main gear, not perpendicular to it. 4) When it is time to have your gear heat-treated (for T0 and T6), ask the shop if you can have your components included in a batch instead of individually. Ask what their schedules are for running certain batches. Having your components treated in a batch run will cost you less than if you were to have them treated individually. That's all for now. I apologize for not sharing this with everybody else. I hope you found this to be helpful. Happy (and safe!) Building and Flying to all of you. Message-ID: <20010223173658.4752.qmail@web2303.mail.yahoo.com> Hi all, This is no big deal, it just seems a little odd to me... The RR webpage says the KR 2 is 14' 6" long. It also says the KR 2S is 16" longer than KR 2. It also says the KR 2S is 16' long. Now I'm not a math major, but isn't there something out of whack here? Doesn't 16' minus 14'6" equal 18"? I realize this pretty much falls into the "KR trivia" category, but I'm just wondering what are the real numbers. If I've missed something here it will be a LONG time before I post again.
