Just wondering if any Pennsylvanians will be in attendance? Other than my
self that is. Since 6399U won't fly till after I get back, the only wing
I'll be taking down to sun'n fun is made by Honda. Unless it is raining
when we leave, then we'll be on 4 wheels. How about you Gary H?

Bob,
I have copied Larry Howell's previous post on the
CANTON KRs OVER TEXAS get-together. Sounds like a lot
of fun. Hope everyone can make it.
Frank Ross, San Antonio, TX.
Hello All,
The Flyin is On! Details are as follows: It will be
held April 27th thru 29th at Thompson Field (Canton
Texas N 32* 36.967' W 095* 52.117' ) This is a
hard surface clear approach both ends, with a row of
trees down the North side of the runway. This airport
is a private field which is about 50 miles east of
Dallas two miles north of I-20. If you are driving
take hwy 859 north from I-20 towards Edgewood 2 miles.
Turn right or east on 3119, there is a big 4 bladed
world war 2 airplane propeller sign painted white at
3119.. It is worth the trip just to see the sign, I
have never seen one like it. There are plenty of big
hangars for airplane storage. This is going to be a
campout, so bring your tent, trailer, motorhome,
plane or whatever you have. I was told that this is
the weekend for the claimed to be US's largest trades
day, The Canton Texas Trades Days. If that is the
case, I was also told there would not be any motel
space that all are booked months in advance. We have
offers on site for sleeping in big insulated hangars
where people live so bring air mattresses, cots,
sleeping bags. There are shower facilities available.
We will serve all meals on site. So if you get sick,
too bad you have to eat our stuff anyway. We have some
KR guys who have offered to cook, we will hope their
cooking is as good as they build airplanes. Our plan
is arrival will start Friday afternoon we will have
dinner Friday night, pancake breakfast, grilled
burgers for lunch and probably smoked beef and chicken
for Saturday night. We may have a Country band
Saturday night, I am not a drinker but the guy who
owns the place has a vending machine full plus he
probably will have a tub full of iced down stuff.
Drinkers say don't trust a guy who doesn't drink but
trust me, we are going to have fun. It was suggested
by Bob from Wichita Kansas that we have a swap meet,
so bring all of your don't wants and sell or trade for
your wants. We are going to talk KRs so bring your
show and tell stuff and if you have any questions
bring those also. Kerry Miller and Curtis Wright
(thats right, Curtis Wright, he's the Wright I
know)said they may have a little composite workshop
and
show how to vacumn bag. If you are interested in that
email me so I can get them in gear. I have been
contacted by at least 20 people who are building
Krs that say they are coming, some are flying finished
planes. If you live in Texas or close by this may be
your chance to see a real finished and flying KR if
you have never seen one.
This Flyin is for anyone from anywhere, if you have
the time and desire we would like to have you.
If you have any questions or suggestions, other than
where I can go!
email me.

John, On Jan 14th mark Langford posted some pictures of my laninated, bent
center section rear spar at
http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/ed_blocher/web_page/
I neglected the grain on the rear spar which shouldn't be a problem but the
end grain of the front spar is alternated. I used 1/4" thick spruce and the
WAF holes will line up in the wood and not a glue joint. As for the
dihedral, the plans call for 5" which is exactly what I have.
If you do this, don't get in a hurry. I messed up my first front spar cap by
trying to epoxy all 8 pieces at the same time. Do 2 or no more than 3 a day
and make sure the wood is pulled together. On my first one I had almost a
1/4" glue joint on the bottom where I didn't get the epoxy squeezed out.
Good luck,
Ed

I am sorry to hear about Tony Bingelis. Last October I
went to the Southwest Regional Fly-in (SWRFI) which is
an EAA event that Tony and others started some years
ago in Killeen, I believe. Anyway, now it has moved to
Abilene, and I saw Tony there for the first time last
October. He is one of my heroes and I made it a point
to go up and say hello and thank him for all the help
his books have given me and will continue to.
That Fly-in was almost rained out, but I got to shake
Tony Bingelis' hand and another senior pilot, Ben
Turner of Sweetwater, was kind enough to give me the
ride of my life in his RV-4.
One of the best flyins I ever will get to.

Using either the HAPI or the Great Plains case and
crank will work to build a much more powerful engine.
It will be possible to get 102hp out of it at 3500rpm,
and that same engine was putting out 85 hp at 3000rpm.
The key is to get enough fuel/air mixture thru the
engine. I bought a book from www.hotvws.com called
"ALL ABOUT VW PERFORMANCE ENGINES II".
On page 34 is the start of a 12 page article on
building up engines, putting them on a dyno, making
changes, and measuring it again. They start with a
stock engine (50hp) and 40 modifications
1600-1776-1915-2165-2332cc and 203hp without using a
turbo. They measure the horsepower every step of the
way.

A few things about the engines in that book...
Those are definitely street engines. They will have modified cams and =
most of them are optimized for more high end power. True, you may be able =
to get 102 hp at 3500rpm, but, they may be using dual Weber 48IDAs, =
ported/polished heads, Engle FK8 cams (racing type cam), and other things =
that aren't suitable for use in an aircraft. Have you ever seen how tall =
a VW engine is with dual carburetors? If you're lucky, you can add a set =
of dual Type 3 manifolds and smaller carburetors, but still, it's set up =
like a VW car. I'm not sure I would be willing to fly behind an engine as =
hot-rodded as some of the ones in that book. =20

Lately there's been a discussion going on about first starts and "dummy" =
propellers. I have some very interesting info about propellers that I =
would like to share about prop safety.=20
These words and calculations is plagiarised from a well known and highly =
respected South African prop builder. I have modified it slightly to fit =
my story. If you disagree with him or myself on any of the content of =
this mail, feel free to fry me OFF the net. I will not have him drawn =
into any mud- slinging of any kind.
A propeller being mounted on an engine running at 2558rpm will cross a =
stationary object (your fingers) at 5116 times per minute (two blades =
remember) resulting in you being rapped on the knuckles 85 times per =
second!
Ever wondered where your fingers went during a prop strike? They were =
transformed from solids to gases instantaneously!
Even at an idle (a mere 825rpm) it will still hit you 10 times before =
you can pull your hand away.
Moral of the story - be very carefull.
If you liked this little bit of information, and would like to see some =
more, let me know. I will contact the author and get his permission to =
publish some more.

Ray,
The concensus seems to be that Wicks and ASAS are the two primary sources for
Sitka spruce. But, over time, I've read some traffic regarding other sources
out in the Northwest and Canada. Even wrote to a yard in WI, but no answer.
Don't know if the effort trying to find and deal with any of these will
generate worthwhile $$ savings. But, as a woodworker primarily, I would
prefer not ordering a precut kit with the attendant markup, unless the delta
is minimal. Also, you can make modifications (and mistakes) without worrying
about stock limitations.

I was not suggesting a pre-cut kit. Wicks cut each piece to my specs. I'm
mot building to plans so 50% of my spruce is custom cut (no extra charge).
If you want to buy your spruce or anything else from some one that doesn't
answer their phone, so be it. Trust me, or if you don't just ask others,
"WICK'S is the ONLY way go". Please notice the quote thingies.

OK Ed, I'm convinced. Once I get an initial bill of materials out of
studying the plans, I'll uswe Wicks. By the way, I seem to notice that
initial covering (before any glassing) calls for 3/32" plywood? Could you
tell me a little more about it? As I've never worked with such thin stuff.
Also, I know the stuff can't be used for compound curves, which may not be a
problem with the KR-2S shape, but I did notice that people get a "banana
effect" when building from the drawings, when the fuselage sides are laid out
level, then later joined by applying to the stations.

My a/c has a C65 engine with carb heat box the airfliter opening is
5"x5.5"
I want to make a round opening for this intake to dress it up. Should I
funnel the opening or just make a 5" Diameter opening?
Is there none a/c grade filters that can be used instead of the
expensive a/c one's

Subject: Canopy bows for gullwing doors.......
Message-ID:
Hey folks.....
I am planning on laminating up a couple of bows; cutting up a standard KR2
canopy for gullwing doors; and doing a flat wrap windshield on a standard
KR2. I can't remember how many laminates or what size or what kind of wood
to use. I could also use some help on the hinging techniques. I like the
ones that hinge off center to the right; giving one larger door opening on
the left (pilot) side.
I would really appreciate any helpful direction or suggestions.
Thanx in advance,
Jerry Mahurin
