I found a Corvair for sale in that paper and = called the seller. I told him that I was not interested in buying his Car= but that I was looking for an engine. He told me of an old junk yard tha= t had some Corvairs. I stoped by this yard but all his Corvairs were earl= y models. This man told me of another yard that had some Corvairs, but be= fore I had a chance to check out this lead I spoke to an older mechanic w= ho told me of yet another yard that had at least one Corvair. I checked t= his yard and found a late model vair convertable which someone had starte= d rebuilding but the city junker laws made him remove it from hid drivewa= y. I walked away telling myself that I already have enough projects. I wo= uld like to have finished that car for a summer driver. They also wanted = $400 for the engine so I passed. Next I found a man who had two early Cor= vairs, one missing some parts, the other was running when he parked it ma= ny years ago. He would have sold me both for $400. One day my next door n= eighbors brought his brother over to see my airplane project. His brother= lives about 80 miles from here and is a home improvement contractor. Whe= n I told him I was looking for a Corvair engine, he said he had done some= work for a man who had a bunch of Corvairs, and he would look up his nam= e and number and give me a call back. This lead is where I got my engine.= The man I got my engine had about 10 or 12 vairs around his farm and man= y more engines. He had always been a Corvair enthusiast and in the mid 70= 's when many of the Corvairs were wearing down he accumilated so many Cor= vairs that he had an auction and sold 100 Corvairs. So to find a Corvair = engine, just talk to people, someone knows someone who knows someone that= has a Corvair engine. Visit http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/ and scroll down to Pat Panzera's Official CorvAircraft Mailing List web site and follow the simple insructions to subscribe. Every week or so, somebody comes up with a lead to several of them. I posted a lead to about 6 engines a week or two ago myself, in Cullman, Alabama. They're out there. The question has become, "does the guy want more than $100 for it, and how far am I going to have to drive to get it". But they ARE out there. And like Jack said, the more people you talk to about Corvair engines, the more engines will magaically appear. And sure, they will run 100LL... The CHT, especially if you can check all cylinders, is fairly important in monitoring engine cooling and overall engine health. In climbs, the CHT will save your engine by letting you know if something is frying. If you won't be doing much high-altitude flying or don't mind about optimizing fuel consumption, skip the EGT and keep the CHT. You can always lean the old-fashioned way by leaning till it gets rough, then richening back a good, 'safe' amount. The EGT just helps you determine where that 'safe' point is. It's sad that we lost one. If you could use some parts contact Ted at the address below. I've already purchased parts from him that I could use there are still some gems left. I have the corvair short block w/pistons and cylinders bolted on. Waiting for the heads to be finished at the machine shop. When I get the heads and valve train together I will update my website with the pix. Dave Mullins Nashua, New Hampshire http://n323xl.iwarp.com Dave, I lost my medical four years ago after 30 years of flying occasionally. During that time my interests changed to old cars. I have a 1948 Frazer Manhattan to restore. The KR2 has been dismantled for parting out. It never flew. I had the lower fuselage on the gear with most of the empenage and controls in. Wing stubs were complete and outer spars built. Four in one exhaust for VW $150.00 Fixed landing gear w/fairings, wheels, brakes, and Lamb tires $450.00 Revmaster VW engine mount $100.00 Outer spars (probably something you would want to look at before buying) $75.00 Sling seat $15.00 2lb Urethane foam 2"X24"X96" (1 pc.) $6.00 2lb Urethane foam 1"X24"X96" (5 pcs) $5.00 ea. 3-1/8" True airspeed indicator (From C-210) $125.00 3-1/8" Altimeter $100.00 (Instruments were tested on a Barden Box by an A&P IA) 3-1/8" Mechanical tachometer (1382 Hours) $50.00 (2) 4-1/4" Landing lights $8.00 ea. Aileron control horns ( not drilled) $15.00 Aircraft firewall plywood (1/4"X2'X3') $20.00 Fuel tank strainer (2) $2.00 ea. Aircraft tail light $15.00 Wing attach fitting spar bolts $20.00 Control cables, brackets, pulleys, turnbuckles w/fork and eye ends installed by same A&P $100.00 (may have to cut cable but will still have one professionally installed cable end.) I have lowered prices. I appreciate any help you can give me in getting out the word. Took a quick look at your project. Impressive! The KR2S is a great project. Happy flying. I hung the thermocouple probe in boiling water but meter only registered 160 deg, F. I'm not sure if this is a good way to check meter. However, if only one can be mounted, which is better, CHT or EGT ??? Phil Phil I had my suspicions about my cht probes so I used a small can of motor = oil, a propane torch for a heater and a common candy thermometer (bougth = from the cooking section at Wal-Mart). Heat the can of oil and compare = the reading of the candy thermometer to the gauge in the aircraft. Of = course the thermometer and the cht probe are immersed in the oil as you = heat it. Be careful of the open flame around the aircraft and have a = extinguisher handy. Your gauge may be close to correct, remember that water boils at a lower = temperature the higher the altitude it is at. I don't rember the exact = formula but I am sure you can look it up in a chemistry or physics book. Hope this information helps. Regards Parley Byington KR-2 (N54PB) Henderson Nv.
