I use a Sony Mavica, MVC-FD73. it has a 10x optical zoom, and takes photos to a standard 3.5 floppy disk. The standard resolution is 640x480. The quality is amazing. If a client needs a hard copy photo, I print one on my Lexmark Z22 printer at it's highest resolution, and the picture is of 35mm photo quality. The battery usually lasts 100-120 minutes, and the camera has a viewing screen, so I can see if I screw up a photo. I highly recommend this camera. BTW, the last price I saw in this camera was $399.00. I also have seen a bunch selling on ebay for less. Ronnie King N9SJM ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rex T. The advantage though is that they'll fit into virtually any computer, but if you use large enough SmartCards or PC Flash cards, you'll never need to download while on the road. I have two 64Mb PC flash cards for my Olympus camera that allow 1300 pictures at 640x460, or about 70 pictures at 1710x1510 resolution (with no compression). I could go to the moon and never run out of "film". 640 x 460 is fine for snapshots for the web, but if you want real pictures of the kids to save and maybe crop, or do other things with, you need more than 2 Megapixel resolution. I wrote a diatribe on digital photography and web page creation, and put it at the top of http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/misc.html . When it comes to batteries, buy some NiMh batteries at Walmart, 1600ma for $10 for four, and use an old NiCad charger to charge them. Buy an HP scanner and you can't go wrong, and I'm sure that are many others. 600 dpi is plenty for what you want, so you can go pretty far down the resolution chain. My only advice is avoid the Microtech scanners, as their software is very painful... Obviously, I don't know what works and what doens't work, but I have three sets of NiMh batteries that I rotate between. Two sets are 2 years old (bought them at Oshkosh for $2 each), and the other is a set of Rav-o-vacs (I know, I know) from Walmart. I've been taking about a hundred pictures a week (lately it's been T-ball and baseball) and charge at least one set every week, and have noticed no degreadation so far. I haven't opened the site that Peter refers to (ISP problems, running from a slow modem laptop at the moment), but I think I've seen it before or something similar. It is interesting stuff, and worth reading, I'm sure. There are battery chargers that take really good care of your batteries using embedded logic, but last time I checked they were about $50. The way I figure it, if a $10 set of batteries will last me a year or two, I'll be ready to buy the lastest technology battery anyway, which typically will hold twice as much charge as something two years old. This is the same kind logic that empowered Larry French to stick a gas guzzling 450 hp radial engine in the Lionheart, knowing that the money he saved for his $10,000 engine over the price of a new IO-720 would buy him fuel for the life of his airplane, and then some. I now have an "official" NiMh charger that came with my camera, and it positively cooks the batteries. The old Eveready NiCad charger is much easier on them. I probably wouldn't have even trid the NiCad charger in the first place except the guy that I bought my first set of NiMh batteries from at Oshkosh told me when I bought them that it wouldn't be a problem. I also have an Eveready Renewal battery charger, whose only claim to fame is that it's systematically blown up every Renewal battery that I've ever put in it. Bottom line is "you takes your chances", I guess. It wouldn't hurt a bit to buy a set of batteries with a charger from the same manufacturer, but even that's no guarantee. But you'd be amazed at how long a set of NiMhs will keep their charge. Often, longer than a brand new set of alkalines. They are without question a huge money saver... Also, specs alone don't tell the whole story on scanners; here's a review from PC Mag on different scanners (it's a little dated but should give you an idea on where to start): http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/filters/guide/0,10172,6001714,00.html Also note that on the same page there is a guide to digital cameras. Here's a good place to shop; they're pretty good on prices and they're dependable, I've never had a problem with them. Tech support is iffy, but that shouldn't be a problem if you go with HP. http://tigerdirect.com/ Here's another place to check prices, but be careful, some of these vendors may be here today, gone tomorrow... http://www.pricewatch.com/ Good luck. It is expensive ($500) but has great software that will let you do more stuff than you can believe. I like mine most because of it's extremely compact size, yet it does what any camera with 35-70 mm lens and 2X and 4X and macro and panoramic and 2 frames per second and built in flash and viewing window and 567 pictures on the 96meg card. Others will do more and you might not mind the size, or want something else, but I really like being able to stick this in my pocket and not worry about carrying film, etc. Gets exceptionally nice pictures and very easy to download, transfer to disc or whatever. Does require a LOT of your hard drive memory, though. On the other hand, you might do what I did. Had an older computer (1.2 GB and I thought it would never be out-dated) so, instead of giving it away, just use it for my photography. Easy to put anything I want to send on a disc and transfer to my "regular" computer. Good Luck, ===== Frank Ross, San Antonio, TX, __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Composite good, dark colors bad. So here goes... First required reading is: http://www.escribe.com/aviation/krnet/index.html?by=Date This is a date-indexed (most recent first) compilation of all posts to KRNet. You might have a question, and it might have already been asked/answered. PS...ignore the flame wars and the poetry... Second, go here: http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/ and explore the whole site. It's gonna take you a while. You might wanna do like I did...let every page load, and then download it to your hard-drive. Then every page loads locally...much, MUCH faster than trying to peruse the whole site online. Third, and I'm only giving you this link because it leads to a lot of other neat links... Well, third, I just went and checked out the links that I started with, and it seems that none of them are currently operative.
