CG came out real good . on front 2" mark of the 8" allowed and estimates out as in center with full fuel and pilot. Problem is the plane is heavy, but I knew it was going to be. stretched 36"over kr2 with 24" extra wing on each side. Put 5/8" foam in all panels and 5.8oz fiberglass on inside. stronger firewall and 0235 lycombing. Made fiberglass tanks for both wings and then tested and glassed in place- this adds weight. Made own detachable header tank and also detachable turtledeck. made gull wing entry with some rollover protection. Used 8 oz glass - 2 layers - both front and back of front spar on wings. Went with 5 x 500 tires for all 3 gear. had to make front gear because of larger tires. used older radios and transponder. Painted with base coat and 3 coats of clear. Point to be made is build light and think as you build. I really felt I wanted a strong plane that could land on grass or rougher ground if needed and would not be carrying anyone but me. N9079B weighs 937 lbs dry and empty. tanks will hold 35 gal. for a total wet weight of 1146 without me if full. At 6 gal per hour estimate I could stay in air 5+ hours. I weigh 215- total of 1361. Will probably limit fuel and weight to 1250 and less than 3 hours flight time. I am sure this heavy weight will start a lot of comments. If you want to build light you need to keep plane to plan size and also use pre molded components or use some of the techniques that Mark has used. Got tri gear re- aligned and centered with thrust bearings to allow easy movement. Taxi tested today and handles well on ground- even turning uphill. The 0235 really purrs. Had to 47kts ground speed per GPS and it really wanted to fly. Handled very good at the higher speeds. I kept down pressure on the nose wheel to avoid lift off. Glad I have time in a dragonfly that is a tail dragger. Plan on letting it lift off and then back down when I am more comfortable with how it handles. Had someone come by at the air show and he said he built a KR2 and it lifted off sooner then he expected. He then stalled/ bounced and was farther off the ground then he thought. Had retractable gear collapse. He said he rebuilt it and got it back in shape but broke out in sweat the next time he got in it. Sold it 5-10 years ago for parts. Have other items to work out before I tackle first flight. Hope to do soon after I get back from Oshkosh. I really think this will be a fun plane to fly and hope it will be used on many long flights in the future. When I spoke with Les Palmer at the Canton TX fly-in, he mentioned that his Subaru KR-2 is around 1100 lbs and flys one-place. He was planning on coming to Pine Bluff this year, may even bring his plane. May give you some comparison. Unfortunately, Les is internet-impared, so you cannot contact him on the net. Rich McCall at: planecrafter76262@yahoo.com on KR net may be able to contact him for you. Les also has the larger tires and wheels (I think they are 600 x 6) and fabricated his own nose-gear. Think you'll have your plane at the KR Gathering? Thanks, ===== Frank Ross, San Antonio, TX, __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yes it is possible, I have done it. The problem is that it takes a long time to get it right and it will be heavier than a sling seat. The advantage is that the seat is more comfortable and it can accommodate a wide range of people. Details can be found at my KR website. Cringely" Subject: Re: KR> seats Message-Id: Anything is POSSIBLE. The real question is whether it is PRACTICAL. The KR seat front is determined by the position of the main wing spar and that isn't going to move. The seat back position is determined by crossmembers that can be positioned somewhat to suit the dimensions of the builder for leg length and seat angle, etc. But once those dimensions are set, they are set. So there are really only a couple practical ways to vary KR seats on a day-to-day basis. One is through the use of additional cushions and the other is through either adjustable rudder pedals or adding pedal extensions. Cushions are easy: build your KR to fit the largest likely pilot then make seat and back booster cushions as needed. The only problems with this solution is you have to carry the cushions around at times you don't need them and for some smaller folks it still might not get you close enough to the rudder pedals. Adjustable rudder pedals sound hard but really aren't. Tony Bingelis has a design in one of his books. It's really just a matter of varying cable length with the equivalent of an idler pulley. Pedal extensions are easier in principle, but practically are only useful if you intend to keep them mounted most of the time. I built a pair of clip-on pedal extensions for my Glasair and every time I installed them I had to get down under the panel. A couple times I thought they'd just have to bury me in the plane it was so hard to get back out. Bob >O.K. I've tried to find info in archive and I can't get "INDEX BY >THREAD". I have been reading about the use of NLF airfoils in Sport Aviation, and know there are people out there who may have an interest in this. If anyone would like to correspond regarding my experience with this wing, I'd be glad to exchange info. Quick description: The wing is 16%, about 25 ft long, and slightly higher aspect ratio than the regular KR wing. The NLF airfoil was designed by Dan Somers at NASA. A friend of mine designed a very clever control "mixer" which allows the entire trailing edge (both flaps and ailerons) to reflex up 12 degrees. This jumps the airspeed 10 mph or so. When flaps are desired, the mixer moves both flaps and aileron downward to about 10 degrees, but when further flap is called for, the mixer allows the ailerons to move down at a lower rate than the flaps themselves. At about 25 degrees of flaps, the ailerons are down about 15 degrees. This allows for really good roll control at really slow speeds. I have frankly never taken the a/c to its top speed (I am chicken!), but it easily cruises at 150 mph indicated at only 2600 rpm, or 24 inches of MP, on my 2280 cc VW engine. The best feature of the wing, however, is at slow speed. Airspeed indicators are notoriously inaccurate at slow speeds, but I have often seen 35 mph on the dial in slow flight, with stalls showing somewhere around 32 mph. Whatever the actual stall speed, I am certainly getting a very wide range of speeds from high to low with this NLF wing. Now for the hard part: I have decided to part out this airplane, as I am about to register a new RV6A, and don't want the liability situation of selling my KR. I have a professionally built VW with Ellison ThrottleBody Injector, electronic ignition, vacuum pump and alternator. It has 250 hours, and was torn down by the engine builder for inspection about 75 hours ago. It runs flawlessly. Will also sell a 50 x 52 Props Inc wood propellor. I'd like $2500 for this engine, and $200 for the prop, which I'll donate to charity. I also have a full gyro panel for sale: KR-marked airspeed indicator, altimeter, VSI, Directional gyro, attitude indicator, electronic tach, various gauges such as fuel and MP. If interested, make me an offer. Also have an ARC 459 transponder and altitude encoder, and an EBC ELT, both in good working order. Make an offer. Finally, I have all the other "small stuff" from the plane such as wheels, tires, brakes, circuit breakers, you name it. Again, make me an offer.
