Superfil is colloidal silica. (35.1% by weight) Silica powder is treated with a 1% aqueous solution of tris (2-methoxyethoxy) vinyl silane, to which sodium hydroxide is added and the resultant slurry is dried at 125'C Peroxide is added to the dried slurry in an acetone solution and the solvent evaporated. This results in an organophilic silica powder. The small particle size facilitates easy polishing of the set resin. Its used to make false teeth. There's nothing wrong with the RR piano hinge method that's been used since day one, and you CAN get rid of the huge gap at the bottom by extending the lower skin to act as a gap seal. You have to taper the forward edge of the bottom of the aileron spar though, just to make sure that it can't jam on you. This way, in normal straight ahead flight, the gap is closed up and drag is minimized. When you turn, the gap is opened up, providing some of that drag that reduces adverse yaw. Here's what I mean, if you don't get it, at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/aileron_gap.jpg . Can't remember for sure but think it was done by someone who makes dragsters. He's not on the KRnet, so unless you go to Dallas, you probably won't get to see it otherwise. After keeping my on needles for about an hour, he passed it with no squawks. N39PP is now ready for test flying. You can see the start of my web page at http://members.aol.com/philkr2s/myhomepage/profile.html It's a start with a lot of work to bring the pictures up to the current time but you can see the end product as the first picture. My problem is that I received my PPL while building and haven't followed up since completing it two years ago due to health problems. Now, I'm a low time (<80 hours), not current (fixing that), and unaccustomed to spirited handling airplanes (harder to fix). The health problems are behind me, so I'm ready to get N39PP in the air. I'm looking for a current KR pilot who would like to make the first flight. To give you a little info on the plane, It's a standard KR2S on tri-gear that was widened about one inch in the cockpit, push-pull rod operated ailerons and elevator. The elevator is counterbalanced. The rudder is cable operated. The trim is MAC, a single center control stick contains the control switches. The engine is a O-200, mid-time, with a three blade WarpDrive. The radio is a Microair 760. Cowl tanks holds 18 gals, the inboard wing tanks could hold 8 gals each but I don't know if I'll ever need them. It's just easier to build them in during construction than going back afterwards. The empty weight is 732 lbs with the CG at 20.57 inches. With everything onboard, the total gross 1190 at a CG of 26.23. This within the calculated range of 22.6 - 28.6 inches from the firewall. The empty CG is within as long as the pilot weighs at least 100 lbs (definitely not my problem). If someone is interested in helping me test, either email me (philkr2s@aol.com) or call me at (919)489-5734. The plane is currently at 5W5 south of Raleigh, NC. Just cou= ld not ge the performance of a 2 blade. I ended up cutting 3" of of each = blade and setting the pitch to 23 1/2 deg to get 165 mph ( thats what it = did with the VW ). But if you set it at 20 deg. it will only go 152 mph b= ut will climb like a homesick angle ( stock dia. ). By the way if you hav= e a stock vert. stab and rudder, you have to bring the power up in stages= . Jamming the throttle full forward will result in an immediate left turn= . =20 Jean N4DD ----- Original Message ----- From: PhilKR2S@aol.com Sent: Monday, August 27, 2001 6:22 PM To: krnet@mailinglists.org Subject: KR> It PASSED!! After a weekend trip to Puerto Rico I have been reinspired to finish our KR. http://jillenium.members.easyspace.com Bill Tabbert _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 21:41:29 -0500 To: From: "Mark Langford" Subject: Re: KR> Speed of a 110 hp KR-2S & engine mount Message-ID: <001e01c12f6a$f0d53cf0$7000a8c0@athlon600> William Tabbert wrote: > Does anybody know how fast we can expect our KR-2S nearly stock with a 110hp > Corvair powering it to go??? How many is there flying now?? Does anybody > have a sketch or dimensions for an engine mount?? I wouldn't be a bit surpised if you could do 200 mph with 110 hp, but it depends on how much attention you've paid to aerodynamics, and stuff like whether or not it's a tri-gear or a tail dragger. Steve Makish is very close to flying his 3100cc "Big Boy" Corvair engine (which probably puts out 125 hp) in his stock KR2, if he hasn't done it already. He will be an invaluable source of information, since he's flown a VW, a Soob, and now the Vair, all in the same airplane. I'll check with him tomorrow. There's a pretty good bit of info on the Vair mount on my KR2S mount page at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/mount_fit.html , but it stops short of a detailed drawing or a sketch. The first half of that page is a mock-up mount that I built as proof of concept and just to hold the engine in place to I could mount the engine and cowling and see how it was all going to play together. The last half of the page is a real mount that's now supporting my engine inside the KR2S/Corvair cowling plug that I'm building. I'll see if I can whip up some sort of drawing in the next few days, but this ought to get you going. Actually, I'd redesign mine, were I to do it again. Maybe I'll do that...
