There aren't many people who are willing and have the time to host the Gathering. I'm happy to go where ever anyone is willing to have it. His voice is much stronger, the burns in his throat are healing, and he seems in very good spirits. =20 In the past, he's been reluctant to speak much about aviation, and I didn't push the issue. This time it's about all he wanted to speak about! =20 He asked me to pass along a very important warning for those of us using the same type of induction system as he used. He'd even like to see us placard this warning. Carb heat must be applied below 2400 rpm or 23". He also added that everything we know about carb ice in general aviation (that nice chart I showed the list last week) goes out the door when we run= =20 mo-gas. Mo-gas really drops the temprature when it evaporates. =20 He has high hopes to get Gary Copins Sky Coupe up and running soon, and try and recreate what happened to the Piet's engine, on the ground. =20 He's seen video supplied from one of the reporting news media, and he believes that the engine is not all that bad off. The earlier reports that stated the engine was melted was erroneous. What's "melted" is the fibergla= ss cowl. He has very high hopes on getting the engine back and restoring it. He even said that the spinner looks useable, negating any of the reports that stated they hit the ground at 90=BA. =20 The engine mount was torn from the firewall from the side, indicative of=20 hitting the ground sideways, reinforcing his belief of a spin. The engine mount held together otherwise. The NTSB is done with their investigation,=20= =20 and are requiring that Jim get a proficiency check. By the way, Jim was=20 back flying his Tailwind 3 weeks after the crash. =20 I asked him about Ed's engine issues, and asked him the performance of his Piet engine as installed. As for full throttle static, he could no= t=20 answer as he's never done it. He said that about cruse settings, he could= =20 get 2650 on a hot FL day, with his 68" Warp Drive. =20 In level flight, he could accelerate to 105 (Vne) and see 2900 before he'd have to reduce power, but if he pitched up for a 95 mph climb and added=20 more power, he'd see 3000. =20 He was reluctant to draw any conclusions or parallels to any other prop, because the Warp Drive flexes. He did say however that cutting the IVO was defiantly going in the wrong direction. He's hoping to be back in=20 Daytona for a week or so toward the end of Sep. At that time he'd like to get together with Ed to help him solve his issues. =20 I'm trying to schedule a visit with William, on my way to the Ottawa KS=20 tandem wing fly-in. http://www.si-inc.com/Ottawa2001/ Mark Langford is scheduled to host the Corvair engine forum, and will be bringing his engine. My plans are to fly out and spend a day or two with William, hopefully in Daytona, where we can mess with his engine (maybe even measure quench area), make a video presentation of William, and then=20 go to the fly-in and show the video. =20 Only reason things are still up in the air is that we are not 100% sure where exactly William will be at that time ... I'd hate to schedule a=20 flight=20 to Daytona tomorrow, to find out 3 days before I depart that William was not up to the trip from New Jersey. Hopefully we'll have this all pinned=20 down in the next few days. =20 Although the Ottawa fly-in is a tandem wing event, all are welcome. So if you are building a KR, Piet, Vision, etc. and are interested in=20 Corvairs, plan on attending. He sounds SO much better. His voice is much stronger, the burns in his throat are healing, and he seems in very good spirits. In the past, he's been reluctant to speak much about aviation, and I didn't push the issue. This time it's about all he wanted to speak about! He asked me to pass along a very important warning for those of us using the same type of induction system as he used. He'd even like to see us placard this warning. Carb heat must be applied below 2400 rpm or 23". He also added that everything we know about carb ice in general aviation (that nice chart I showed the list last week) goes out the door when we run=20 mo-gas. Mo-gas really drops the temprature when it evaporates. He has high hopes to get Gary Copins Sky Coupe up and running soon, and try and recreate what happened to the Piet's engine, on the ground. He's seen video supplied from one of the reporting news media, and he believes that the engine is not all that bad off. The earlier reports that stated the engine was melted was erroneous. What's "melted" is the fiberglas= s cowl. He has very high hopes on getting the engine back and restoring it. He even said that the spinner looks useable, negating any of the reports that stated they hit the ground at 90=BA. The engine mount was torn from the firewall from the side, indicative of=20 hitting the ground sideways, reinforcing his belief of a spin. The engine mount held together otherwise. The NTSB is done with their investigation, =20 and are requiring that Jim get a proficiency check. By the way, Jim was=20 back flying his Tailwind 3 weeks after the crash. I asked him about Ed's engine issues, and asked him the performance of his Piet engine as installed. As for full throttle static, he could not= =20 answer as he's never done it. He said that about cruse settings, he could=20 get 2650 on a hot FL day, with his 68" Warp Drive. In level flight, he could accelerate to 105 (Vne) and see 2900 before he'd have to reduce power, but if he pitched up for a 95 mph climb and added=20 more power, he'd see 3000. He was reluctant to draw any conclusions or parallels to any other prop, because the Warp Drive flexes. He did say however that cutting the IVO was defiantly going in the wrong direction. He's hoping to be back in=20 Daytona for a week or so toward the end of Sep. At that time he'd like to get together with Ed to help him solve his issues. I'm trying to schedule a visit with William, on my way to the Ottawa KS=20 tandem wing fly-in. http://www.si-inc.com/Ottawa2001/ Mark Langford is scheduled to host the Corvair engine forum, and will be bringing his engine. My plans are to fly out and spend a day or two with William, hopefully in Daytona, where we can mess with his engine (maybe even measure quench area), make a video presentation of William, and then=20 go to the fly-in and show the video. Only reason things are still up in the air is that we are not 100% sure where exactly William will be at that time ... I'd hate to schedule a fligh= t=20 to Daytona tomorrow, to find out 3 days before I depart that William was not up to the trip from New Jersey. Hopefully we'll have this all pinned=20 down in the next few days. Although the Ottawa fly-in is a tandem wing event, all are welcome. As my Taylor is still in the hanger. Just finishing up my engine cowling. What is the ideal angle for the aircraft to rest at for a three point stall landings? I plan in using the new wing with 18%. Right now I will sit at 10deg. The view should be ok at this angle it think. Thirteen or fourteen degrees would be better, but you'll have to extend the gear legs to get there because your tail wheel is probably like mine, already as close to the rudder as you dare get it. Of course there are a bunch flying with less than ten (especially the retract guys), so there must be some way to land it like it is. Maybe one of the pilots will illucidate us. As luck would have it, Troy called just as I finished writing the stuff above. He said he just doesn't do full-stall landings in his KR, which he said is typical of many high performance airplanes. He described what he does as more of a "tail low wheel landing", because otherwise his tail wheel would be on the ground and his mains still about a foot in the air when it stalled. I'm sure some of these guys have perfected full stall landings in KRs, and maybe they'll tell us about it... I always did wheel landings and raised the tail slightly as the mains touched. This was to kill the lift. The wings are so low to the ground that it wants to keep flying. I had a terrible time landing it until Bob Muse gave me that tip and I never had much trouble with it after that. I always felt safer with the extra speed you have in a wheel landing. Daniel R.
