First off the "Tribute" was written in something like 1973 and the troubles he was referring to was the OPEC induced oil crisis and subsequent economic crisis...and things were a little different then... Airbus was a dream in the French government's mind. And yes they build some impressive aircraft today. The Soviets had (have) an impressive space program that was beat to the moon...enough said. I won't debate every political foreign policy decision with you but I will say this... The Americans are not the only country to have a feeling of pride about who they are and what they have accomplished (...computer chip credit cards and high-speed trains...ring any bells????) Would the French have rather the Americans "contain" the Germans at the English channel or have gone all the way and removed them from power? Jealousy about who's the best will get us nowhere... Like it or not we are all in the world together and in today's technological world we are more closely tied than ever... The fact is, what happened on Tuesday could have been any country anywhere and the rest of the world can get on board and try to put a stop to those who think they have a mandate from God to kill or they can go it alone...their choice. Side-note...As an American I hope a terrorist never hijacks a beautiful Airbus airliner and crashes it into the base of the Eiffel tower...terrible image but as long as these people are allowed to organize and train for their mass murders in country's that consider terrorism a tactical alternative weapon then that is an image that every Frenchman needs to think about. At this time, as I said before, the order of procession will be commercial, IFR then VFR. The idea is to have flight plans so that any diversion will be witnessed. VFR GA is going to be last. I would recommend anyone interested to go to aopa.org for the latest. I checked with FSS and yes, that ultralight reported earlier here was in violation, and subject to shootdown for violation of the national airspace. The builder had taken off with the canopy in the "half latch" position, then tried to lock it at about 200ft. The lift generated by the canopy pulled it open and deposited it on the stbd centre section . He lost control and mushed in with enough force to shatter the main spar.He was uninjured apart from a chipped vertebrae thanks to a seat comprising of 4" of foam/ GRP sandwich .This design was in a newsletter, 163 by Bob Muse? A similar accident happened to a Quickie testing a prop which failed in flight. The thing is ,this seat design is simple to make, comfortable and light. If we can actively help rescue efforts, we should do so. If we can not actively help, we should try to continue "Life as usual" as much as possible, to show Terrorists how inconsequential their futile actions are.
