Mike Arkansas Warns Against Using A-B-C Extinguishers For Aircraft fires The Arkansas Department of Aeronautics reports it is seeing a disturbing increase in the number of Class A-B-C fire extinguishers on airport ramps and airport service vehicles, including fuel trucks. This type of extinguisher poses a severe aircraft damage problem because monammonium phosphate is highly corrosive to aluminum. If used on an airplane, the chemical flows into structural cracks and crevices and can't be washed out as can the dry chemical agents found in B-C type extinguishers. The aircraft must be disassembled to manually clean the surfaces right down to the rivets. Failure to do so will result in corrosive destruction of the airplane. ADA feels this is a serious education problem that can be solved once communicated properly. Contractors and airport fire departments should only use B-C type extinguishers when dealing with fire around an airplane or the damage caused by corrosion my exceed that caused by the fire. It is much improved from the original one. I felt I had to make these modifications for better comfort and/or safety. So, for you guys who are still building, let me list them, it might give you some thoughts. - I added a Vertical Speed Indicator. Here in Johannesburg, with permanent high density altitude, this was much needed. - I added a CHT/EGT gauge, because with the VW engine, oil pressure and temperature will not be enough to see trouble coming. - I replaced the mechaniv\cal oil pressure gauge with an electric one (I did not want a high pressure oil leak behind the instrument panel) - I moved the trim buttons from the instrument panel to the sticks. I found them too awkward to use on the instrument panel. - I made a bracket for the handheld radio, where any handheld radio will fit (it is actually an antiquated adjustable car cellular phone holder, from the time when cell-phones were huge). - I made provisions for a GPS, any GPS, consisting of 4 threaded holes in the panel, and a cigarette lighter next to it. - I made the fuel sight gauge tubing internal diameter bigger (4mm). The previous one was about 2mm, and was lagging badly. - I changed the fuses for proper circuit breakers. - I made all the markings, placards, etc., when at the workshop. - I added wiring provisions for a strobe, a landing light, cabin light, and nav lights - I cut a big hole in the instrument shelf, at the middle, so that I can inspect my instrument panel from behind without removing it (I had in mind monitoring potential fuel leaks in the sight gauge) - I cut by half the number of screws holding the instrument panel (10 are enough) - I routed all wires and hoses on proper cable ties holders. These I epoxied to a piece of wood, then I glued the wood to the skin wood where I needed them). That's about it! I promised that I would eventually take the time to sit down and add some text and improve on the pictures some (the other webpage was an automatic thing that just arbitrarily shrunk them all). Well, I finally got off my dead butt and did it! It's at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/pinebluff2001/ , and there are now some bigger air-to-air pictures, cropped, and I hung some names on a lot of the faces. I even put a couple of "turnoffs" for you guys with insufficient RAM to load the whole thing at once. What more could you ask... He and Mark Jones, have been an inspriation for those who want to put up web sites about KRs. I found a genealogy website that has excellent directions for developing your own website. While it is directed to genealogy the information is useful to anyone interested in building a good website. It is simple, yet thorough and covers everything from free to expensive, simple to complex. The web address is: http://www.cyndislist.com/construc.htm Langford has given us all great ideas for developing a website and we can use those ideas to great advantage. Cyndi's site will help you too, no matter what your interest is. Enjoy. ===== Frank Ross, San Antonio, TX, __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? You might have to make some adjustments like moving the seat back and adding more weight up front, like extra fuel,to compensate for the shift in the CG, but it can be done,if you are willing to put the necessary work into it.
