What a relief:-). Looks like I can be a clown with best of them:-). You guys still have a couple of days to truck on down to Lakeland for a wonderful weekend. The best deals on "stuff" is usually on the last weekend as people are trying to just get rid of inventory. If Doug Steen can fly his V-tail 11 hours from Denver and Mark Langford can drive 12 hours from Huntville (left at midnight) just to camp out with me under Doug's wing for one night, (well, maybe they came to see some stuff also:-) you can get there. He is working on his engine. Bobby could not come. Probably just as well, since the weather back to TX was pretty bad on my return drive yesterday. This was the first time I got to meet Mr Muse and I enjoyed a good conversation with him. The two planes Linda Bennet took photos of were gone by Tuesday afternoon. Ken Thomas' Subaru powered KR was there on Tues, but I never saw him, even at the dinner. I want to thank the Bennets for all the great support they provide the KR gang. I believe in buying what I can from my friends and, if Steve and Linda have anything I want to buy, I WILL buy it from them. I want my friends to live long and prosper. As usual, I got to meet a LOT of new KR friends at Sun-N-Fun and had a great time. It is a LONG trip and this time was especially hard on my '83 Porsche 944. The first evening of my trip I discovered a missing retainer bolt on the left front brake caliper. Took most of the next morning in Iowa, Louisianna, to find a 12mm bolt with the right thread spacing (150). Found one in a farm implement place. Stopped next night in Tallahassee and had coolant running out of the front of the engine. That'll stop your heart! Needed a water pump, but that means taking off the timing belt, and that means you'd better find a GOOD water-cooled Porsche shop. Fortunately, there are several in Tallahassee and it only took one FULL day to do it. Used 944s are cheap but the parts and labor are not. I was REAL lucky it happened in Tallahassee. Carrera Motorsports is a small shop, but they let me watch and showed me a lot of things I could do to up-grade and improve the car myself. On to Miami to visit my cousins before going to Lakeland. Leaving Miami on Sunday AM for Lakeland, the catalytic converter broke off right where the converter joins the pipe on the aft end. My cousins friend welded it for me first thing Monday AM, so I got delayed a day, but got to visit an extra day with my cousins. The weld broke just as I left Sam Sayer's place in Zephyr Hills. I wore ear plugs all the way back to TX. It's a great car, but I don't think I'll make any more long trips with it. I had a great stay at Sam's and really enjoyed seeing his plane and the other stuff he has made. Sam is a craftsman with a capital C. I missed his story of getting shot down in a B-17 in WWII, but his lovely wife Virginia told me about it. Sam's building his second KR. I had a lot of fun, but I'm glad to be back home. I want to thank everyone who puts so much time and energy into making Sun-N-Fun possible. Sorry I missed seeing some of you. Frank --- Daniel Heath wrote: > Linda, > > Thanks for the pictures. At the time, I was very interested in designing a retractable gear (still am) and will definately use some of the ideas in these pics when the time comes to build landing gear. Skip was extremely kind to specially take these pics for me and send them to me via snail mail (land-sea). By the way these are seven of about 20 that he sent me. These are the ones that show best what everyone is interested in. I can also explain how the actuator mechanism works if any one is interested (quite brilliant actually), also how he stopped the gear from swiveling like a castor wheel. Any way Mark will probably anounce shortly where to find them. VIDAL" Subject: More about Aircraft Spruce Message-ID: About shipment: When you happen to live in South Africa, Aircraft Spruce can often be the only available supplier for some goodies. Trouble is, the shipment cost is $ 200. I requested them to send by air mail instead of courier, but they have their habits. They also have a representative in South Africa, but that guy dioes not seem to be interested in arranging bulk shipments. About technical support: With such shipping fees, you don't want to mess with the order. So, I tried to check with them which tachometer would go on my VW equipped with electronic ignition. They did not know, and told me to check with the manufacturers! So much for tech support. Anyway, I decided to trust their catalogue. Guess what? It is only once I received the tacho that I discovered it required a mechanical sender, and that that sender would never fit on a VW engine anyway. I was not wrong, the catalogue was. About customer care And of course, their customer care department did not offer any solution, because they would still not know which tacho was the right one for my engine! Now, for us living in the third world, dollars are hard to earn. To waste them that way prevents you from sleeping for a long time. Of course, I should have noted that the initials of Aircraft Spruce and Specialties are A.S.S.!
