His top speed is limited to only 160Mph while Marty was flying over 190 with it. According to my estimates his equivalent flat plate drag area is 2.6 sq feet instead of average 1.7 (almost a sq. foot difference!) Where is the problem? I do not know. Wrong wing incidence? Wrong horizonal stab. incidence? Engine cooling air flow? Close examination of Marty's plane could reveal some answers. There are several flying conversions in France, the lightest is the Citroen AX 1.4D but for only about 53 hp and 105 kg firewall-forward. The most atractive engine to be used in a KR-2S should be the new Citroen/Peugeot/Ford double-turbo 90 hp HDi engine, with a dry weight of "only" 98 kg. I am not a specialist in this area, I have already my engine that run on Avgas. If you need to meet the guys involved in Diesel conversions, you should come this year to the Chambley fly-in in France, it will be held at the end of July. Hope this helps somehow. Message-ID: <000e01c1feb2$7202bb60$ca44a6d1@oemcomputer> Rick, Seat height is one of those variables that every builder gets to wrestle with. The first set of seats I put in my KR-2S mod was 4.5-inches high at the back. When I put the canopy in place the first time and sat under it, it was a rude awakening to the head clearance issue. I eventually ended up with a seat height of about 2.5 inches off the bottom of the plane. Two other things that will factor into your seat height requirements will be the angle of your seat back relative to the fuselage and your personal height. I am 5' 11" and the seat back on my planne has a 34 degree angle. The more vertical the back and the taller you are, the lower your seat will need to be. There is an obvious limit to how far back you can angle your seat. 30-35 degrees is probably in the ballpark for most folks. Your mileage may vary, but you will have to figure your neck muscles will get tired if you put the seat too far back! If you get the nose high enough, which is probably higher than it was on the retract, it will be almost impossible to 3 point. You are also correct about the difficulty on take off and landing. Are you sure about this? I'm not a real KR pilot, so I'm open to a reality check, but I've always thought that landing attitude for an almost-full stall three point landing in a taildragger should be very close to the stall angle for the wing, which is something like 14 degrees for a stock KR2. With an average of 2.5 degrees of wing incidence, this means the fuselage would need to be at an 11.5 degree angle to the ground. I checked some KR2s with the original retracts at one of the Gatherings and found them to sit on the ground with an angle of about 8 degrees. That is probably why they are reportedly hard to three point. The tailwheel would hit before the mains. Of course, I've heard one or two guys tell me that that's the way they land them, tail first, so what do I know? The bottom line is that they are probably all different, for various reasons. I'd love to hear from the various pilots on this subject of three-point landings in their KRs. My KR2S with Diehl hear sits at about 10 degrees (which would be 12.5 total if wing incidence were stock) which would still need taller main gear to get closer to that 14 degree number. I will probably add another 2" to my gear height before I fly it, in an effort to gain more prop clearance and to improve the drag qualities of the wheel pants to gear leg situation. I only have 8" at the moment with a 54" prop and plan to spend some time on sod. Of course the bigest reason to compromise on this is visibility over the cowling, but that also comes at the expense of prop clearance. I just crawled into mine with the new cowling installed and I think I'll have some decent forward visibility on the ground. From the cockit, the cowling just about disappears, so it's as if I'm sitting in my plane with no engine or anything out past the firewall. That 2.4" thrustline drop is paying dividends. (See http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/02051818m.jpg , which I took about three hours ago). I guess this goes back to seating again. My Dragonfly canopy is located at exactly the same height as the big RR KR2S drawing's side view (that's about the only clue RR gives you as to how tall to make it), with a 17.5" maximum height above the longeron. I'm 6' tall, and have about 2 inches between the seat the floor, and my hair touches the canopy. I'll lower it to the floor (which is not uncommon) shortly after I get it flying, I suspect, so I'll have room for foam cushioning. Of course all of this canopy stuff is subjective, entirely dependent upon how much frame you have between the top longeron and the canopy, the angle you install it (mine is raked a little more than most), where you locate it fore and aft, etc... David =20 ----- Original Message ----- From: Frank Ross Sent: Sunday, 19 May 2002 08:34 To: David French Subject: KR-2 Plans David, No, it all comes together. But, keep your eyes open. I got my first set of plans at an auction at my EAA chapter for $40. Join an EAA chapter, let everyone know you want to look at plans for the KR2 and someone may have a set they'll give you. I had a fellow in AZ give me parts of three sets of WAR Corsair plans. I could see enough that I realized I don't want to try to build one of those planes. Also, browse through the Fly-Marts at Fly-Ins. I found a set of E-Racer plans for $50 (a $245 value, complete) at Copperstate several years ago. Again, when I saw what you get, I was REAL glad I didn't spend $245 on them. Also, someone in your area may loan or let you read through their KR2 plans. It wouldn't hurt to advertise. See if someone will sell you a set for $50. They don't have to be complete or in good condition if you already have KR-1 plans.
