You can usually get a good bargain on one. Try to find one that you can cut the rollers off of, and then floor it with 3\4" plywood and it will work great. I held out till the owner sold it to me for $250. I spent another $400 for four new tires and wheels at "Sams Club" and two inch lumber and channel iron for decking, nuts, bolts, light kit, etc. It has a light weight channel frame, 12 inch wheels, and I use the winch to load and unload. So far I've hauled the KR twice, a two place Acro Sport twice, an RV-6A, and RV-4, and a Long Eze. My KR gear goes to the edge of the trailer which is right at the 8 foot limit. I winch the aircraft to center the weight over the tandem axles and give me about 200 pounds of toung weight. It pulls like a dream. I forgot, it has also hauled a Tailwind project and a hot tub! My requirements were tandem axle (I didn't want to loose my project to a silly trailer tire blowout), at least 12 inch wheels, reasonable trailer weight (I didn't want a 1000 pound trailer to haul a 700 pound load). It has all worked out well for me, both price and performance. O , I also hauled an eight foot commercial cooler from my hanger to the dump when I purchased my hanger and was cleaning it out. 700 pounds and I loaded it myself with the winch. Did I mention the 8 inch by 20 foot chimney, the riding lawn mower, and let's see, what else .......................... Whatever you use, start with something that you don't have to worry about loosing 5 or 10 years of hard labor to a cheap trailer. Spend all that time and money to see it end up in a ditch on the way to the airport. Not me !! Get together with your chapter buddies and build a chapter trailer if you want to cut the cost. People with big engines (and therefore lots of torque) typically do that in an effort to enlarge the vertical stab to enhance directional stability. The KR2S plans call for a larger vertical stab than the KR2 plans to handle the larger 0-200 that's listed as an optional engine for the S. Having said all of this, Troy actually made his rudder smaller (during his last make-over) on his stock-length KR and says it's still big enough, and Roy Marsh said the same (he used stock KR2 tail dimensions). Troy has a C-85 and Roy had an 80 hp Revmaster turbo. It would be interesting to hear from somebody that had started out with no strake, then added it, to see what kind of difference it made. The thing about a strake is that it's area doesn't have as large a moment arm as the vertical stab, so you don't get as much effect as if you'd put it in the vertical stab to start by extending it, but it's a great "band-aid" for improving a directional stability problem "after-construction". At least that's the way I see it. Other opinions are welcome...
