It has a GPAS 2180 VW non turbo. I am burning 100LL. I have a case of Phillips XC 20W 50 oil left over from my last airplane. Would it be a good idea for me to use this oil in my engine? I thought I seen an article and video about the benefits of using avaition oil in aircraft engines. Something about ash dispersant and some other stuff. It also seems like the use of aviation fuel makes a difference in the type of oil you should use. I learned a great deal. Thanks to our Hosts for putting the Gathering on, Mike and Terry Gabez, Steve and Linda Bennett, and Jim and Deb Faughn. I would also like to say thanks to the pilots that brought their planes and answered the millions of questions. There really is no substitute for talking to someone who has already done what you are trying to do. A special thanks goes to Rich Shirley for all the questions he answered about his engine installation. His KR1 won Best Engine Installation this year. I've put my pictures on the web but I must warn you that it is not a complete report of what went on at the Gathering. I was planning on leaving for Red Oak on Thursday to spend time with Steve Bennett, Dan Diehl and Marti Roberts, who are some of the gang from way back. However, weather wasn't on my side and instead of leaving early Thursday morning I went to work to make a little more money but in hopes of getting out later that afternoon or Friday morning. The weather gods frowned on that day and instead, I was able to get out of Parks Airport on a Special VFR Friday at 12:45 pm. After crossing the Mississippi river the clouds appeared to open up some so I climbed to 4500 after getting into the 5000 ft ring of the Class B airspace. This proved to be a bad decision because I could see in front of me a solid deck and my ground speed was down to 118 mph. Went through a hole back down to 1700 ft and flew about 1000 ft above the ground for 180 miles then up to about 2500 ft. Dodged some towers and rode the bumps to the fuel stop and then on into Red Oak landing a little before 4. I'm sure others will tell of the highlights of the Gathering with words and pictures but I wanted to share a few of my own. First, there is nothing like a KR crowd. I have lots of fun and every year I feel very welcome. I only wish I could remember everyone's name and where they are from. Thanks for the camaraderie. I really enjoyed seeing the airplanes. Jeff Scott has really improved his craft and Richard Shirley has a beautiful KR-1 and motivated me to (maybe) make some upgrades in my plane. Of course, Marti is Marti and everyone else's plane that flew in is a winner. I wish I could have had more time to look over all the planes including the late arriving Canadian's. We got everyone up on Saturday afternoon late for Video Bob to take some in-flight video and he expects the video to be ready for Christmas. A real thrill was flying formation with Rich. He is a master at this and when you are going 200 mph in the bumps on a pass (mine won't do that without the dive and his will - I jealous) you really have to trust the guy that is on your wing. HE WAS CLOSE! My job was not that hard but flying smooth turns wasn't that easy with all the bumps on Saturday afternoon. When I was landing he did a Knife Edge pass above the runway that I'm sorry I missed, I hope Video Bob got it on tape (don't tell the FAA). Saturday evening I had the honor of singing Larry Flesner's original song "The Dream and The Dreamer." This was truly an honor and was all done via email until I got there on Friday and passed Larry's first hearing of the song which he said was close enough. Jeannette was crying about 2/3 through the song and Larry looked like he was having his first child with anticipation of the result. I understand the feeling since having a piece of you presented to the public is pretty scary. Since I was looking at everyone I knew he had a "hit" because you could tell that everyone enjoyed it and again I was honored to be able to do my part. Of course we ended with all the pilots up front as the KR chorus and the audience singing the KR song. Sunday I left about 10 and in the process was able to hunt down Larry and Mark on the route home. I was a little surprised how hard it is to see a Tri-Pacer so it must be impossible to see a KR. Got over Mexico, Mo with enough fuel in the tank to get home but a bladder that shouldn't have had a soda in the morning. That cold air at 5500 got to me. After emptying one tank and putting on 6 gal for good measure in the other. Larry and Mark showed up. I left and went back to 5500 because it was bumpy and I could and then descended into St. Louis skirting around Spirit of St. Louis airport and under the TCA into my home airport where I landed in a 50 degree 10 kt crosswind. A greaser to end the flight. Amazing airplane. Thanks to everyone and I want to say one more thing. FINISH YOUR PLANES!!!!!! I shouldn't be winning anything anymore with an 11 year old plane. I like it but GET YOUR PLANES DONE!!!! (I'm currently planning upgrades on my cowling and interior.) Let's see more people and more planes there next year. Steve, Linda, Mike and Terri did a great job as host's and they deserve to have a much greater attendance. Well for 1579 miles each way to the gathering and back, I can report no damage to N323XL for the trip. Travel time was approximately 30 hours each way. There was some minor checking cracks in the spar caps from the rain I ran into in Des Moines and the sun the next day. I pulled under an overpass and tarped the plane. The cheap blue tarp I purchased lasted about 200 miles before shredding to pieces, but I was out of the serious thunderstorm and back under fairly clear skies, so I cut the tarp off. The last forty miles into Red Oak there was a light rain so I pressed on as fast as i could. Upon reaching the Hotel I parked the trailer under their front entrance canopy for the night. Mark langford was there to greet me. Mark, Larry Flesner, and I went to the hotel bar and had a night cap before turning in. There were 10 cargo straps holding the bird to the trailer: Two from the motor mount forward Two from each gear leg, going forward and aft One from each gear leg diagonally to the opposite rear of the trailer and two from the tail tie down to each side of the trailer I checked the straps after the first half hour and hour for tightness then every refueling stop. I lost 5 straps due to sharp edges cutting through them. The bird would ride solidly with the trailer. if it started to bounce then I pulled over to find one of the straps cut loose. I replaced the straps with extras I brought. orienting the straps away from the sharp edges. The trip home was uneventful and I lost no straps. I hauled the KR to the hangar so I could do a fuel tank leak test with fuel and calabrate my fuel sending units. All test went well, fuel drains work , pumps pull fuel with as little as 1.5 gal in the tank when in a level attitude, etc. It was when I filled the left tank to the full level that I developed a leak. I pumped it out with the fuel pump using the line to the carb stuck back in a gas can. So now I have a leak to look for and fix. I'll start at the point where I had a leak when air testing the tanks and if that's it this may not be a major setback. Not a single drop of a leak anywhere else in the system. Of course I had to play a bit yesterday with the wings on and taxied around the ramp and the grass around the hangar. RED OAK 2003 OR BUST! On the positive side, it appears I only missed my estimate on tank volume by .2 gallon. That was with a rough measure on the side of a gas can so I may be right on when filling from a metered pump. Thanks again to everyone that made the Gathering such an enjoyable event.
