I wouldn't think that mixing two different epoxies would be a good idea, unless you know a lot about chemistry, and how the two would react together. One thing you could do is brush epoxy into the hole and let it soak in five minutes, then brush in some more. I've also heard of laying them down flat so the hole is vertical, putting duct tape over one end, and filling the hole with epoxy, while soaking the dowel in epoxy. After 10 or 15 minutes, insert the dowel and clean up the ensuing mess. You could also do the same thing with the bolts themselves, and the fit would be perfected, and the connection somewhat stronger. If you use the dowel method, I'd slide the WAFs inward some to dodge those dowels by half the distance between the bolt holes though. Whether or not your bolts are too close to the edge is another matter. . I wasn't real thrilled with the amount of spar cap material that I had left either, since the spar caps are beveled, and the angle of the WAFs causes some geometry issues that preclude parallel WAFs. And my spar caps are thicker than most people's! One way to mount the WAFs is to clamp them to the spars until you've figured out how to get maximum possible material at all locations, and then match drill the sparcaps. So, how far is the hole from edge of the spar cap, both front and back? It might be that you can't get it any better anyway. Evans "Light Plane Design Handbook" (based on the Mil handbooks) says those holes should be centered at least 4 hole diameters from an edge (when loaded perpendicular to the grain), but the RR design doesn't allow for that, especially considering the bevel... Imagine the tensile strength of the wood spar cap with a hole in it. It is weaker than one without a hole in it. Then look at the strength of materials properties of wood the tensile strength perpendicular to grain of wood is only 1/10 of the tensile strength parallel to grain of wood. Message-Id: <85OLTSQTSB7PJZULJKH87JFDAEADCGB.3d971f12@cx239334-a> I don't know if any of the following will help. I tried to think of stuff you could try. I assume that you have verified that the aluminum "box" is grounded to the engine/battery ground. The case of the regulator body is ground, assuming that this one is similar to the one I have from GPASC. (I assume that both are off a motorcycle, but havent looked up the specific model). What does your "amp" meter say? If you are draining the battery, I would assume it would be pegged to the - side (or + side depending on how you connected it). My aluminum regulator has three leads on it, two for alternating current to the alternator windings, and the center is 12V DC out (I assume). When you tested for ohms between the "power wire" and the outisde of the aluminum case, which wire was this? The output? You said it showed connected? Was it shorted (0 ohms), or was there some resistance, and if so, was the resistance different if you reversed the ohmeter leads? If you get a short (0 ohms) both directions it looks like your regulator output is shorted to ground (this would be bad). The regulator is solid state, and will probably have some type of PN junction that would show up as a resistive connection, so you may get a needle deflection on the ohmmeter... as long as it's not the same deflection as when you short the leads together you are probably OK. The needle deflection should be different when you switch the positive and negitive leads of the meter. If that was the case however, your alternator circuit breaker would probably have popped, and the ammeter would have shown full deflection as the grounded alternator output was draining your battery? Did you see this? Can you pull your alternator circuit breaker, or open your alternator switch to see what the ammeter does? I think the regulator getting warm is normal... hot, I can't say as I haven't checked mine after running the engine for long periods of time. Since you indicated the light tester got brighter as you revved the engine, it suggests that the regulator is probably working, but it's hard to tell with just a light tester. The ammeter should indicate what is going on between the alternator/battery. Also, the alternator may only be putting out 10-20 amps or less depending on engine RPM. Do you know what the current load is of your electronic iginition? The compu-fire is around 6A per coil, and with two coils, I'm assuming it would be between 6-12A... I budgeted for 15A in my wiring and circuit breaker. Also... if you have power to the electronic ignition when the engine is off, it will drain the battery and possibly fry the ignition long term, Comp-U-Fire cautions not to leave the key "on" in automotive applicationss, so I assume other electronic ignitions are similar. Modern cars probably have solid state relays, but the Comp-U-Fire is for VW applications which wouldn't have that. If you could replace the ammeter connections with a good volt/current meter or get one of those current meters that "clip" around the wires with an inductive pick up, you can determine what the current flow is out of the alternator output. If the alternator is putting out 10-12 amps, the regulator may just be doing it's job and getting hot, if it's hot to the touch it will fail prematurly, so more cooling or a bigger regulator may be needed. I haven't had my engine running for long enough periods of time to check the temperature by touch on my regulator, so I can't say if they always get hot or not. If they do... they will probably eventually burn up and it would be a good idea for us on KR-net to come up with a larger unit with a bigger heat sink to replace it. You could take the regulator into a motorcycle shop and see if they can get you a larger one... just a thought. Might be cheaper than buying one from GPASC, which would be my other thought. -- Ross 9/28/2002 7:10:03 PM, Christine Coolidge wrote: > >I have a strang problem that I can't figure out. I have a transfer opportunity up there and I would like to find out a few details regarding experimental aviation in MT. As you all know, a bad day at the airport is better than a good day at the office so I need to get the important information to use in making my transfer decision! It is sitting on = my boat now and looks great. Preliminary measurements look like it will = fit widths from 36" to 42". I'll post more info and some pictures (if I can figure out how, I'm a = computer dummy.) Anywat, it looks great. Lets think about a group purchase and get a few bucks off. Todd spent a lot of time and money to do this for us so lets get an = order together. And I am not making any money out of this, in fact with phone calls and = shipping on the test canopy I am making a contribution.
