The ad says (correction at the bottom) that the compression tests are in the mid 50's and mid 60's for the cylinders and states the compression is good. My I.A. wouldn't sign this puppy of I'm sure. Also there is no carb which could run you another $500 to as high as $1000 for a new one. I'm guessing $1200 to $1400 to rework the cylinders so you are probably at $5000 or better by the time you get it installed. There are lots of 0-200's around and I'd advise you to get one close to home where you can see the engine and talk to the seller or buy from someone that will stand behind it, not a "pig in a polk" on e-bay. I salvaged out a C-150 and got my 0-200 for almost free and I've put over $1000 for mags and wire harness and rebuilt the carb. It seems to run o.k. but I have yet to do a compression test so I may spend another $1200 to $1500. These babys aren't cheap so know what you're getting when you lay your money down. Larry Flesner P.S. I have not personally had a chance to really test my engine's 8.4:1 compression ratio, since it's only run for an hour to break it in, and that was on a mixture of 100LL and 93 octane auto fuel. I'm not convinced that you can get away with 9:1 compression ratios on auto fuel in wide-open airplane use (especially on hot summer days), which is why I set mine at 8.4:1 for now. That's still just an educated guess though, and will require testing to determine for sure. I did a lot of research on the subject, and 8.4 is all I have the guts to try, initially. I'll do first flights on 100LL, and gradually move to pure 93 auto fuel and check for detonation (using a knock sensor). There is also a CorvAircraft list devoted to the Corvair engines in aircraft. You may subscribe by sending a message with "subscribe corvaircraft" in the body to corvaircraft-subscribe@mailinglists.org. There are several Corvair experts on the list, and experimenters working to install one in a Dragonfly, a Tailwind, KR2s, Christavia, AirCamper, and several other homebuilt aircraft. Larry Capp's excellent CorvAircraft Search Engine is located at http://www.maddyhome.com/corvairsrch . A search for "detonation" will turn up 237 messages, and some interesting opinions on the matter. It has an anti-knock sensor that will retard the timing if it sence it is leading to detination. Maybe a retarded timing in the corvair will allow it to run 91 octane autogas. the difference from 91 to 100 is not much and with your 8.4:1 compression I think you will do perfect. However, during the building process, if you have a minimum of three visits from an EAA Technical Counselor, you may qualify for a discount on your aircraft insurance. Also, your FAA inspector may be more lenient on you if he is aware of your being coached by an EAA Technical Counselor. As far as the N number goes, you can search N number data bases for the one you desire. Reserved numbers will not show up in the data bases, only those which are permanently registered will. I would hope that if you really tried, you'd be able to build a copy of mine from the information given at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/mount_fit.html . If you'd like one built for you William Wynne ( WilliamTCA@aol.com ) would probably build you one for something like $250. I'll bet your local welding shop would charge you way more than that even if you brought them the pieces all cut up and fitted properly, and they don't know nearly as much about it as William. You can find more information on his website at http://www.flycorvair.com/ . His manual "Corvair Flight Engines for use in Experimental Aircraft" has over 17 pages of instructions, photos, and drawings of how to build an engine mount for the Corvair engine. If you are going to put a Corvair engine for an airplane, it'll save you a bunch of questions if you go ahead and spend the $59 for this excellent work... Alphapoxy + micro = 3.1 lb/gal* Aeropoxy + micro = 3.8 lb/gal* Aeropoxy Light (PTM&W) = 3.8 lb/gal* SuperFil (Polyfiber) = 5.0 lb/gal* Regards, Larry A. It's also loaded with microballons to make it light. This dude took several samples to a testing facility and determined that it is every bit as acceptable and enduring as Aeropoxy light or Super Fil. It sets up fast, can be carved with a cheese grater and is extremely fexible. The stuff he recommends is sold by Napa and is made by Martin - Senour paints. The Napa numbers are 6370, microlight filler (use this as your base coat), and 6389, Techcoat, the finishing agent.
