So if you use "their" panel, you'll have a nice one! This is a pretty cool little avionics design package, at least as far as seeing what fits where. The double line at the top really shouldn't even be there, since it's just the hidden thickness of my forward deck where the panel fastens. The bottom is designed to be folded forward, which gives you a nice little shelf to mount headphone jacks, bus bars, relays, etc. That line should be a centerline, since it's the fold point. These lines were translated to solid lines when I saved them to the image file. I'll put the real CAD file out there on my panel page for anybody that wants it next time I think about it. There's more on my instrument panel at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/kpanel.html . It is forward and above the inlet of the carburetor now. My baffeling originally took all of the air in two holes in the front of the cowl. All the air passed either through the oil cooler and past the back of the engine or was directed through the cylinders and out the bottom of the engine to the passage on the bottom back of the cowling. Now that the oil cooler is on the bottom of the engine I am not sure of the best way to baffel it. Obviously, I will still have air come into the top side of the engine, pass through the cylinders, and out the bottom of the engine and out the back of the cowl. The problem comes in with the air that goes through the oil cooler. I have two options to get the air. One is to use one of the holes in the front sides of the cowl to go to the top of the engine and the other one to route directly to the oil cooler. The problem with that is getting even cooling on both sides of the engine. Most of the air will cool just the side of the engine that the hole is on and a lower volume will go to the other side unless I do some tricky air directing. The other option is to have both of the holes go to the top of the engine and put another hole just under the prop on the bottom of the cowl for the oil cooler. If I do this, is there a general rule for how big the hole should be? If I use one hole for both the carb inlet air and the oil cooler air then how big does it need to be? My last dilema is with the air that comes out the back of the oil cooler. I am worried about that air giving a positive pressure under the engine and preventing a good flow of air from the top of the engine from going through the cylinders. I can duct the air directly out the hole on the back of the cowl, but that is not an easy process with the carb and other things in the way. It is doable, just not easy. Is anyone else using the oil cooler on the bottom of the engine that can give me some feedback? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Nov 2002 19:51:15 -0800 To: KRnet@mailinglists.org From: Bill Higdon Subject: Re: KR> engine baffeling Message-ID: <3DE2EFB3.4090505@attbi.com> Brian Kraut wrote: > I have remote mounted my oil cooler from its original location on the > top of the engine to the bottom of the engine. Just a short hub added to the crankshaft, It is a Type 4 VW (2 liter). The engine mount was pushed forward by adding two spacers, consisting of large aluminum blocks, against the firewall. The instructions explained how to attach the outside of the wheel pants but no information was given for the inside attachment. I have the Dan Diehl fixed gear with a nose gear. there were good instructions for the nose gear pant but none for the mains. Thanks in advance.
