I routed a tachometer cable to the bottom of the carb, where the jet adjustment screw is. Alas, it did not work too well. There was a "spring" effect on the cable, and I did not manage to make decent stops to limit the screw travel (in order to avoid to kill the engine unwillingly in flight). Somebody on the list told me that he had made a control using gears. I tried my luck with that, and it seems to work. I eliminated quite a few problems by having a demultiplication, using a better knob in order to apply more strength, and, more importantly, using a cable that has less play inside its sleeve. The trouble is, I used brass gears that are way too small for the job, and I think they are going to wear quickly. My setting looks more like a clockwork than anything else. Any idea where I can find some gears for the next attempt? I have no idea what they still use gears for, nowadays! Message-ID: <002201c2bc30$ce902340$881a3941@hppav> Mark, You may notice this posting originated on 1-12-03. I have read a lot of things about KRs and even attended a meet in Oklahoma a few years ago, but never have I read so much information or looked at so many photos as what this posting had. I have just now finished reading everything I could through the different sites. I have been sitting here like a zombie with my mouth gapped open in amazement. Thank all of you for sharing. I have a question after viewing the photos. Why does the Diehl nosegear have an odd bend in it before it meets the wheel fork? I like the Grumman Tr2 setup better. Why does the pipe go vertical for such a distance after leaving the nose gear fork? It looks functional, just not aerodynamic. The two things that impress me about the "modern" KR 2S is the popular Corvair engine and the Dragonfly Canopy. This seems to make a slick, powerful, attractive airplane. Thanks again for educating the "new kid in town". Kevin. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mark Jones" To: "KR-Net" Sent: Sunday, January 12, 2003 9:15 PM Subject: KR> Photo of the week. Use good expensive masking tape that will give you a good edge when you take it off. 2. Mask off the newly cured [dryed] paint being carefull to place the tape over the edge of the new paint. Let both colors cure. Then sand lightly and buff ith edges. Be carefull you only get one chance to do it right or wrong as the case may go eighter way. Message-ID: <200301151125_MC3-1-24DF-C5B2@compuserve.com> Daniel, With out going into great length of discussion on painting basics here ar= e some points. These are based on using Base paint and Clear Coat. When you are masking off for your second color use the masking tape from = a body shop supply house this WILL, I mean WILL, make a big difference. = There is a great difference in masking tapes when used for painting. After you have made all you tape lines then first spray the tape line are= a of the second color with the same base color paint. The reason for this step is to stop the bleed of the second color under the tape edge if you get any it will be of the base coat and will give you a good tight second= color line. Sand the tape edge seal coat and then apply the second color= . = After the first and second colors have set up use 1000 to 2000 grit and lightly break down the edges of the color line. Now you should apply a coat of clear let it set and lightly with 1000 to 2000 girt sand the colo= r lines again and apply a second clear coat. This should give you a great finish with no color sep lines and some real depth to the color. Happy painting. The tape you use and the trick that was mentioned about spraying over the tape edge with the same color as your first makes all the difference in the world. You just have to be your own judge as to when is the right time to remove the tape. Just an observation. As a point of reference for the VW crowd, I've got a 2600cc VW TypeIV turbo motor and it weighed 209 pounds firewall forward less prop when I weighed it. At the time I had not built the engine baffles so that will add a few pounds. I expect that it will make 40 less horsepower than the Corvair at sea level but at FL200 there could be an advantage to the turbo VW. Only test flying will tell for sure. Right now it is forecast to be clear and sunny with a high of 61F on Saturday, so no worries. If the storm causes road delays for William and Gus (they should be on the road headed this way from Florida right now), we will still have the workshop and I'll try to strip some threads or maybe over-torque some nuts or something to keep folks entertained, but everyone can continue to plan to attend. Do dress warmly, but in layers since it will be warming up as the day wears on and you can build up a pretty good sweat trying to un-seize those old frozen engines ;o) William is supposed to pick up a running engine from a CorvAIRCRAFTer along the way to put on his test stand and run during the College, so here's your chance to hear and see a Corvair whip up some Texas buffel grass. Detailed info with maps is on the website at http://www.corvaircraft.com and detailed driving directions at http://www.corvaircraft.com/Corvair/AlamoDirections.html and we should get rolling by 8 AM on Saturday! Reminder on things to bring if you'll be working on an engine or subassembly: rags, carb cleaner (it's only $1.59 a can so bring plenty), hand tools, and your rebuild parts. We'll have work tables, chairs, and specialized tools needed to do the work. Coffee and donuts in the morning, and lunch at noon... all will be 'no charge' to those who show up, sign the guest register, and refrain from hooting when I strip out a critical set of threads ;o) Hope to see y'all there!
