Am I just not > seeing the shielding that is there, or is there really none on Kuntzleman's > strobes? Well the box is aluminum, so maybe that's "as good" as ckicken wire? I don't know about the box, but I CAN tell you that they ship you wire that is NOT shielded! That should have been my first clue. But really, I have absolutely NO trace of noise where my strobe box is now, and to be honest, I've flown in Wichita spam cans that had an absolutely phenomenal amount of strobe whine. Still, the flash rate is so dang slow that I'll probably buy a Whelen Comet Flash (or whatever it's called) before I actually fly. I should mention that the Kuntzlemann strobe is intended for ultralight guys, where radio interference is usually not a big deal... My intercom is a "Pilot PA 200". The unit has a lead that is approx 4 feet long and is wired with a duel pin plug that fits into a hand held radio. It has a two setting selector switch for the brand of radio it is used with. The (my) Sportys works on the "King" setting. My "hide-away" holder is made from a modified control yoke holder. I DO NOT have a header tank behind the panel so there is room for my radio to swing completely up and behind the panel by simply turning a thumb nut. Other options might be to use a 90 degree antenna connector and put the radio on a "hide-away" mount that drops down behind the forward spar or a panel mount and run the wiring into and behind the panel. I ran out of panel space and because I'm 6'4" and 200 lbs, I didn't have many options. For "average" type pilots, a side wall mount might work also. I originally built the holder to mount my GPS also but that made it a bit too wide and it was touching my legs so I narrowed it down for the radio only. I made a slide in power strip that is wired to aircraft power and slides into the battery position when the radio battery is removed. The power strip has two brass strips that transfer the power to the battery contacts on the bottom of the radio. With the battery removed the radio is only about 4 inches tall. Hope this helps. Good luck. Heath - Columbia, SC ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Do a web search for "Pilot PA 200". www.marvegolden.com is one supplier and has a picture. I bought mine used (like new) from a flying buddy for $50 ! Deals are where you find them. I recall the selector switch on the intercom says " A22" and "KX99". My radio works on the "KX99" setting. I would insure compatability when ordering. I think the newer Sporty's hand held radios have an "external power" plug so you could eliminate the work of making a power slide like I did. If you bought a used Sporty's and didn't get a operators manual, they are available on the web and you can print one out. The Sporty's hand held has to be one of the best kept secrets on the hand held market. I don't think you will get any better performance by paying more money for other brands. I am not impressed with the other small, cheap hand helds like the Y***** brand you see advertised. My old used Sporty's is a "Nav/Com" unit and has features like 10 memory channels, search, etc. The newer models have several more features. Check out their ads. You might even get lucky and win their airplane in the annual drawing! Hope this helps. So today I finally found out why. As it turns out, 4130 steel air normalizes. That means that if you heat it up, and then just let it sit out to cool down, you have returned it to a normalized state, and have done the heat-treating yourself. No wonder it's a cheap process....but paying for that at all sounds like you are overpaying. So, my point is, no matter how you make the holes in your WAF's, whether it be waterjet, laser cutting, drilling, or shooting a bullet through them, there is no reason to worry about the heat affected zone, or losing the heat treatment. By setting these on your workbench when you are done making a hole and waiting a bit, you have effectively normalized the part.....and done it cheaply. Nice, huh? Just don't throw water or oil on it...that will screw up the cooling speed and give you potentially unwanted results--hence "Air Normalize" Here's a good website that talks about 4130 steel. http://www.eaa1000.av.org/technicl/4130.htm http://www.eaa1000.av.org has links on it to great pages, including "Technical Articles" where I found the steel article. As promised in my subject line, http://www.eaa1000.av.org/technicl/antennae.htm is a good article on antenna installation. Hope this helps. Whoever out there is a member of Chapter 1000, great website. Some oxidation by the weld but they clean up with a a little sand blasting with micro beads. Heat treating is unnecessary and extra expensive.
