Thanks Tim KR2 N7038V +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Tim, My OPINION is that the small advantage of flaps over a speed brake is not worth the extra effort of installation, at least in the "standard" KR configuration. The most basic speed brake I've seen was on a Dragonfly. It was hinged at the rear and had a rope with a T handle attached on the front edge. The rope was knotted at several points and pulled through a bracket with a hole that was slotted. The rope was pulled out of the slot, the brake let down to the desired angle and the rope was pulled back into the slot with the knot holding it at that angle. I don't know what air loads there were on the rope but the builder claimed it worked just fine. I would advise extreme caution on airspeed when first testing a system like that. Other front hinged systems would still be easier to install then cutting out and installing flaps, IN MY OPINION. Your results may vary! Any >suggestions? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ My first exposure to a vertical card compass (two days ago) indicates to me that it is just a sensitive to interference as a standard "float" type mag compass. It's still a magnetic compass, just a different layout. If you have any doubts, just pass a screwdriver near the instrument and see what happens. I believe it should be more stable then the float type mag compass and easier to interpret. I was also told that it is important to have a good shock mount. That should not be hard to do when mounted in the panel as I intend to do. I'm using a 3 1/8" hole and will shock mount the plate that cuts the hole down to the size of the compass and then shock mount the compass to the plate. Even if mounted on top of the panel a shock mount should not be too hard to accomplish. Your results may vary! My cruise speed is rather low considering what some guys are getting, but at full cruise ( 135 mph ) I can deploy the brake fully with no adverse affect to handling or flyability. Also, there is no disruption of the air flow over the tail surfaces as some have stated. Obviously I didn't just yank the thing to full deflection but went through the 3 positions in approx 10 seconds. If you fly the pattern the way your supposed to and set up properly on final, this setup works great considering how simple it is. ----__JNP_000_0e72.58c4.19d0 Content-Type: text/html; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

Probably not telling you anything that isn't obvious, but the speed brake will be easier to add than flaps. The thing about the speed brake on a stock fuselage with retracts is that you're a bit limited on the size of the brake panel because the stock retracts don't put the belly very high off the ground. Now if you make it a rule to never deploy the speed brake on or near the ground, that isn't an issue, but that might limit its usefulness in killing float sometimes. It has sounded to me like the speed brake does more for you than flaps on the KR if you're looking to slow it down on approach. Mark Langford's (and others using split or Fowler flaps) might be an exception, but from what I've seen on the list, the stock design plain flaps aren't as effective as the speed brake at holding down the approach speed and helping get the airplane down. I think it has a bit more effect lowering the nose too.
