The warb drive prop, how hard it is to change the pitch? You mentioned that you didnt have spats, you refering to wheel pants? Your strait pipes sticking out has to be a big drag factor as I read in my Custom Planes magazine. If you would have went with the rear started woudl you have avoided the bump in the cowling? Im getting ready to make my wooden firefall portion and consiter raising the top deck just a tad to allow a nice streamline cowl rather then bumps. Did you happen to weigh your engine fire wall forward. Whats the empty weight? Justin KR2S ----- Original Message ----- From: "John and Janet Martindale" To: "KRnet" ; "CorvAircraft" Sent: Tuesday, June 17, 2003 6:52 PM Subject: KR>Performance Folks Several people have asked what performance I am getting with the 2700cc Corvair in my KR2. With the 3 blade 56" dia Warp Drive set at 23 degrees pitch I see about 150 knots (173mph) at 3000rpm in level cruise and gross weight (1200lbs). However the engine won't wind up to the rpm band I would prefer (3800-4000rpm). SOS at 56" dia is about 4600rpm which coincides with about the max performance that can be got out of the OT10 cam. I'll be trying with a finer pitch shortly. Also yet to put on 5.00x5 spats (big drag at present). Hoping to tweak up to at least 160 knots (RR redline is 173 knots - 200mph). Does anyone know if there are limits on Warp Drive rpm other than tip speed, eg., on centripetal force at the hub or blade collars?? That's 40% lower than it was just a couple of weeks back. It can't get any cheaper than this. This cloth is 38" wide and 100 yards long. At $70 total delivered what you pay per square foot is just 7.8 cents. The count is 60 x 47 end/in. The breaking strength is 70 x 40 lb.f/in. The thickness is 0.0025". The finish on this fabric is a silane for any resin. A brief explanation of a finish on fiberglass. When fiberglass is woven the yarn in the greige has an oily starch coating that allows it to slide more easily during the weaving to prevent breakage of the fibers. After the cloth is woven it is then put through a heat cleaning process to remove this coating. After that a new finish such as a Silane or the chrome based finish Volan is then applied. These finishes complex with the silicone dioxide in the glass and leave one group of molecules to bond to the resin. It is more or less a primer that creates a strong bond between the glass and the resin. The roll will be securely packed in plastic, bubble wrap, and corrugated wrap and we pay the insurance. We accept most any form of payment but prefer PAYPAL. We also accept checks and money orders if from US banks. Sorry, no Canadian shipments for this deal. Someone must have submitted engineering justification to justify the increase or it would not have been approved. I don't know the details however. KR's are often flown over 900lbs...it is the CoG that is more important. A rule of thumb is to reduce the design loading by 1G for every 100lb over gross. There was a thread on the group about this that would be available on the archives. It was to do with just which part of the airframe would be the weakest......I think people concluded it would be the pilot himself :-). The KR is a very strong beast when built to plans. I have my starter and ring gear and will need the adapter and harmonic balancer to begin planning brackets. If you have them, how much?<< Yes, I'm having some made. Unfortunately my machinist is buried at the moment by the company he does most of his work for, in an unexpected uncommonly huge run of gamma ray detectors used in long wall coal mining. He's normally very dependable, and a top notch machinist with a new top of the line CNC lathe in his shop, so I'm still confident that he will deliver (he says he'll try to do it next week, but he said that last week too!). The price is $87 which includes shipping, and there are several folks signed up and waiting. I never posted this to KRnet because I figured anybody that was going to use a Corvair engine would be on the CorvAircraft list anyway. (To subscribe, visit http://mylist.net/listinfo/corvaircraft to sign up). If anybody wants either out or in, let me know, since he still has not even started yet. The deal is as follows, which I posted several weeks ago, except that I'm doing it rather than Ray... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- FlexHeads, Ok, here's the deal. Ray Sedman has volunteered to have a batch of flexplate hubs made, in a non-profit effort to help folks that nned to buy them at a reasonable price. They will be "hard anodized" and will cost about $77 each (that's very close). The hard anodizing adds $9 to the cost, but it will make the V-groove last much longer. If you've never heard of hard anodizing, I had my prop hub hard anodized, and then took it to a machinist to have a few holes enlarged. He all but cussed me when he found out it was hard anodized! They will be a beautiful clear, I believe, if it's done like my prop hub. This price is based on a batch of 10, so we need to sell at least ten. I believe I've had even more folks than that commit to a hub (or two or three) and I want at least one more for myself. My guess is that the average UPS shipping for one of these is about $8, and I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for another $2 to help pay for the boxes and packing materials, not to mention Ray's time to box these up, stick labels on them, and ship them. So now we're up to a grand total of $87 each total, which includes shipping. Anybody who KNOWS they can do better, and are willing to VOLUNTEER to do this job, is more than welcome to take over. This is in line with what I could do locally, so I don't think anybody's going to save much money on an alternative deal, but you are welcome to prove me wrong. What do you get for your hard-earned money? A flexplate hub just like the one shown at http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/01041402.jpg (see http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/sentra.html for all the excruciating installation details), EXCEPT it's going to be a quarter inch longer than mine, to enable much easier access to the oil cooler ports in the case (relax, Veneck hub buyers, I put that same bug in his ear, so yours are longer too). With the starter slid out another quarter inch you have plenty (well, maybe just "sufficient") room to install fittings into an aluminum block to remote your cooler or filter. I managed it on mine (contrary to what I say at the top of that web page, see the bottom picture on that web site), but I'd give just about anything for another quarter inch! Also, the holes will be sized for 3/8" bolts rather than 10mm. Just to keep our liability (and hassle level) to a minium, these hubs are being offered as a convenience for those who've independently analyzed their needs, and have concluded that this hub is appropriate for their particular installation. Bolt length and torque shall be left to the judgement of the buyer. I doubt that I (or Ray) will ever be stupid enough to volunteer to do this again, so if you want one, now's the time to pony up! So for right now, let's assume the total cost is $87 (Ray hasn't had a chance to respond telling me whether or not my shipping guess is good enough, and the anodizing price is still "fluid"). If you want one, reply to this email to ME (not the list) and let me know how many you want. I realize that most of you have already done that, but now we have a price, and this will give you a chance to reconsider, and will put these all in one place with the same subject so I don't have to wonder if anybody slipped through a crack. Actual machining won't commence until I have the checks in hand (which I will cash and reimburse Ray). The number of flexplate hubs made will be determined by how much money I've collected 10 days from today, Friday, May 10th. Delivery may be as much as 6 weeks away, but probably closer to 4. There are too many factors beyond my control to make any promises. So, email me privately (even if you've already done so) and include your mailing address so we'll know where to mail the hub. I'll reply with my address to which you mail a check for $87 (or some multiple), and we'll get the ball rolling... If I increase the throttle the rpm cuts back to 2500 and then gradually increases to max. I have checked the throttle slide position and confirm that the slide is 2/3 open. The carb is a Bing type (AMAL concentric) with the cylindrical slide. Mixture and timing are OK . Main jet size doesn't seem to alter it. I found some air leaks in the inlet manifold welds which I fixed and this improved things a bit. Magneto and harness have been serviced and rig tested OK. Would appreciate any suggestions (clean ones!) Well, he is doing just that by making my tanks for me. These tanks will go in the outboard wings and hold approximately 12 gallons each. I originally had drawn up tanks which held 13.14 gallons per Mark Langford's calculations. Theses tanks were shortened by one inch from original drawings. I must say Dana has done an excellent job in fabricating these tanks. He estimates a total of seven hours to complete the tanks.
