I asked for input a few weeks ago and I haven't been able to find anyone else that has kept one outside. I am having a cover made for mine. I will probably have them make it out of a material called Sunbrella. That is a common material for car covers and some of the aircraft cover manufacturers use it also. It is supposed to be UV blocking, it is light weight, and it has a backing that should not scratch the paint. I am having socks made for the wings, socks for the prop and one or more odd shaped sections for the rest of the plane. The canopy cover will have straps that tie around the bottom of the plane. I am having the canopy cover made in a separate piece so that I can use it with the full cover at my airport or so I can leave the rest of the cover home when I travel and just carry the canopy and prop covers with me when I travel and use them separately. I will probably have sections velcro together or tie with straps. I am avoiding snaps and zippers. I have two local upholstery/canvas shops giving me quotes. I haven't done a complete drawing of what I want yet, but they are saying around $800.00 now. I did check all of the regular aircraft cover manufacturers and saw a few at Sun-N-Fun, but none of them had patterns for a KR2. I can let you know how things work out and give you contact information for whichever one I use, but the plane isn't going to the airport for another two to three weeks so I won't have any experience to give to you for probably a few months. -------Original Message------- From: JSMONDAY@aol.com Sent: 07/24/03 01:42 AM To: krnet@mylist.net Subject: KR>Keeping my Finished KR-2S on an Outside Tie Down > > I am purchasing a partially complete KR-2S and was thinking when it was finished that I would store it outside, covered on a tie down. The location would be Corona, CA which is in southern california with fairly stable temperatures, and not very much rain. I was going to make a complete cover for it. Tie Downs at Corona AJO can be obtained for $30 per month, and hangers generally run around $300 per month. There has been a glassair out there for several years with no cover and seems to have faired fairly well. Was just looking for input, I am planning on flying it quite often, and may actually dismantle it in winter time and garage it. However it would probably never get below 45 degrees in the winter time, but we do get some short but heavy rain. Birch wins in every area except density, which is the only area in which Basswood wins (it's lighter than all the rest). Mahogony is the best compromise, since its strength is obviously sufficient (given KR history) with a density close to Basswood (although it doesn't show up on this particular list, I don't think). The plans call for mahogony or birch, and that's worked for everybody so far. Basswood is weaker in every respect... I'll be flying in on either Sunday (preferable) or Monday and all KR's that aren't camping should try to park in the automotive engine area. I am working on updating the presentation for Forum, with Mark's help, and have some pretty exciting video I will be using for talking through the landing presentation. This last Sunday, I took a friend who is in the video business (like Video Bob) and he went for a 1st flight in my KR to the Cape Girardeau airshow. The entire purpose was to get a video that showed what it was like in the phases of landing a KR. We just finished editing the video and it exceeds my expectations. For those that have never flown in a KR, this is as real as it gets. We did a really good landing and then on the way back, I let him know we were going to do a botched approach that we would have to correct for. This required a good slip and a bit of a bounce that was all captured out of the canopy. Pretty good friend to do this with me! Anyway besides the landing sequences, you will also see the KR up close and personal with an F-18, F16 and a Blackhawk helicopter .... on the ground. They also gave me permission to make closed traffic, a low approach and an abrupt vertical move to leave the area which is also on tape. This video will be shown at our talk at Oshkosh. By the way, I got to see several KR people which was why I went in the first place. Thanks for the hospitality Mike and Larry. For those that aren't going, you will have to wait. My friend, also named Bob, has volunteered, once I'm back, to finish the edit with my narration of the landings and then encode it for delivery on the Web. Hopefully by late August. Take care and I hope to see everyone at Oshkosh.
