I did double the number of ribs in each panel after the first bow up episode. I have plenty of pink, blue and other urethane foams on hand but I'm not ready to tear the other out yet. I have been very careful about the sanding pressure by using a 4" PVC pipe wrapped with 50 grit paper to rough close to shape and then finishing with my 8' alum. I - beam level with 80 grit paper glued to one side. I have a guide set on the stub wing and at the tip for the level to ride on so as not to flex the foam panels in the middle. The panels bow over a 24 hour period after I have a near perfect surface done. I'm starting to believe it's the temp. difference. I have been sanding the wings at 4 to 5 in the morning at mid 60's temp. and the hanger going up to the 90's during the day. I may have just talked myself into taking the foam out and starting over. If you get into weather in your KR that requires a heated pitot/static you will probably have already encountered something to bring you down. By the way, I have a heated pitot/static laying in my garage (for 10 years now) that I got from a Cessna. It is probably a 12 VDC unit and I assume it works. I chose not to use it on my KR and went with light weight 1/4" tubing instead. Check with any aircraft salvage yard (Trade-a-Plane) or mine might be for sale. Fellows, Most of you have given the good General a proper dressing down several times over now. I have a revision to his business plan to propose. 1. Clients buy plans from R. R. & the widow makes a decent living. 2. Gen. Locker sets up his KR factory near a resort such as acapulco or Puerto Villarta. 3. Clients fly into Mexico and check into a good hotel near the factory. They "work" 8 hours a day along side the General's army of Mexicans (who do all the stoop work such as sanding.) The General provides cheap Mexican parts. Don't they still make VW bugs in Mexico? Isn't drift wood as strong as spruce? 4. Clients save a lot of money on this fast build program. That savings almost covers the cost of Tequila and Senioritas. (You were wondering what they were doing the other 16 hours in a day?) 5. The client flies off his required 40 hours by pulling tourists in parachutes. After all, isn't a KR as good as a motor boat for this? 6. The client, who built more than 51%, can then cross country the thing home. No, KR's usually don't get over 14,000 feet but the General's custom oxygen system is great for recovering from the Tequila hangover. All this ought to take about 60 days in Mexico and cost around ten grand more than building a KR at home in the garage. (Not counting the cost of tequila and senioritas) ;-|}. As a side note, the canopy shown in the link above has the same light penetration factor as the one I am installing on my black RV, except mine has a bronze tint to go with my gold trim. The stock Van's canopy has 76% light penetration. I wanted something a little darker but did not want it to adversely affect my night flying. If there is any interest, I have done quite of bit of research in this area and have several links showing different canopies with varying degrees of light penetration. In addition, I have spoke with several pilots and got their input as to acceptable percentages for night flying. If interested email me. Their web site has a great search engine that will allow you to quickly find the particular FARs that apply to your immediate subject of interest. Take a look at: http://www.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgFAR.nsf/MainFram e?OpenFrameSet. On the left side at the top there is a search box. Put in your keyword in my case it was pitot and I found all the places in the regs that pertain to pitot. From that I was able to quickly find the reference to pitot heat being required for IFR operations. It's under 23.1323(d) which states if your airspeed system is going to be used for IFR or Known Icing you must have pitot heat. As a result of the search, I also discovered a new requirement 23.1326 (March 1996), that there must be an annunciator for the pitot heat to warn the pilot if it is off or burned out. This leads me to conclude that one of the things we should do before we apply for certification is to review the appropriate section of FAR Part 91.205, Powered civil aircraft with standard category U.S. airworthiness certificates required equipment. Then for each piece of equipment that we have installed or is required we should search the FARs at the link above for any regulations that might require a change to our KR before certification. Since the FARs are a moving target, it will be an iterative process to see what the regulations are as we build a particular system, as well as what they might change to by the time we apply for certification. At least now it's easier to sift through the regulations and find what is of interest in the FARs. My wife Carla and I are first time KR attendees and are really looking forward to the gathering. I bought a KR2 kit about 15 years ago, built the fuselage sides and spars then stopped due to space limitations. We moved to the Poplar Grove IL airport last year and keep our Mooney there with us. I retired yesterday and now have both the time and space to resume the KR 2 project. Steve won't remember this but I met him when you guys lived in Palatine. In fact I met Steve when he was selling an engine to Herb Bull (long time ago!). We'll be flying in on Thursday and probably will leave on Saturday. We're looking forward to meeting all you guys! There is a VFR, VFR night, and IFR section with the equipment required for each. As indicated in my earlier post, you need to be aware that there might be additional requirements linked to this required equipment in other sections of the regulations. At least 91.205 will make you aware of the minimum list of things to worry about finding out more information about. The FAAs web site search feature makes finding these linkages easier than it has ever been in the past. >>http://www.airweb.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgFAR.nsf/Curren tFARPart/1585AA03FF236ED6852566CF006794C0?OpenDocument<< Note: this link is one line between >> and <<.
